3Primary Times EASTER ISSUE

Welcome to our Easter edition of Primary Times. This issue is full of ideas of what to do and where to go with the family this Spring.

Thanks to all the children who sent in their brilliant pictures for Mother’s Day – as usual we got a huge response - see the winners on Pupils’ page. We’ve got more fantastic reader offers, vouchers and competitions inside and on the regional pages of the Primary Times website. See our Easter Special and Days Out pages for ideas for the school holidays.

Thanks to all our readers who answered our reader survey online and in the February magazine – we had lots of interesting comments – we’ll be incorporating the best of them in future issues…

Have a great Easter and see you in May.

WITCHES: BURNED ALIVE! AT YORK DUNGEONYork’s scariest attraction just got scarier as the York Dungeon launches its most shocking show to date this coming Easter 2010. . . The York Dungeon will throw visitors into a crucible of heresy and witchcraft this coming Easter holiday as the city’s scariest attraction launches: Witches: Burned Alive! Witches: Burned Alive! Sees the attraction at its most shocking yet, as using state of the art fi re and smoke effects the Dungeon burns a witch to the bone before the eyes of petrifi ed visitors, sparing no gruesome graphic detail. The hellish show transports visitors back to one of the most horrifi c passages in history; ‘the Burning Times’ of the 16th and 17th centuries when an estimated 200,000 people were condemned for witchcraft. After suffering shambolic show trials where the guilt of the accused had in many cases been pre-determined, hundreds of victims were condemned to burn alive at the stake. If that wasn’t enough to appal the visitors, the Dungeon will also proudly present in the New Year an all new putrefying plague show complete with horrifi c ‘death like’ corpse, a freshly re-tortured Guy Fawkes show and a terrifying re-twisted Turpin: Highwayman from hell show. The newfangled York Dungeon creaks open its doors Easter 2010. For more information, please visit: www.thedungeons.com. York Dungeon, 12 Clifford Street, York. Tel: 01904 632599.

RSPBBempton ClisWe're just out of Bempton village on the B1229, or a 20 minute walk from Bempton village train station.

The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a registered charity: England and Wales no. 207076, Scotland no. SC037654

Bring this voucher with you and you'll be able to park your car for free. That means you and all your passengers can get into the reserve without paying a penny!FREE!

They’re big, they smell and they’re very noisy...Come along and meet our seabirds – icy white bodies, huge black-tipped wings, peachy-yellow heads and starring, pale green eyes!

Sounds like something from Doctor Who, doesn’t it? But we’re not talking about aliens from another planet. These are gannets and they live at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, along with thousands of other seabirds.

From the top of the cliffs at our nature reserve between Bridlington and Filey, you can watch them do a bit of home improvement on the nest, get luvvy duvvy with their partners or tell off an interfering neighbour.

To tell the truth, they’re really rather noisy - and they pong quite a bit as well. Still, it is brilliant watching them and sometimes they fl y so close you can almost reach out and touch them.

Along the cliff ledges from the gannets, there are these other birds called guillemots, all lined up together like little waiters dressed in black and white. And, sometimes, among them, you see this other bird called a puffi n. It’s got a big, brightly-coloured beak and pinky-orange feet. You just have to laugh when you see them, they look so funny.

The cliffs are gorgeous and really, really high. But you’re safe as long as you stay behind the fences. It’s a lovely walk between the fi ve viewing points, where there’s these friendly people from the RSPB. They let you look through their telescopes at the birds. And they know lots of interesting stuff about the birds, as well!

At Easter there’s going to be loads of games to play, people taking visitors on walks and loads more things to do.

You can borrow one of our very special wildlife explorer packs that are full of great things to help you discover more when you’re on the reserve

Why don’t you pop along and see us – and the gannets and guillemots and kittiwakes and puffi ns, of course.

Come along and meet our seabirds – icy white bodies, huge black-tipped

a fantastic way of turning the party into something even more memorable and fantastic. No arguing about what to eat, the Ready, Steady, Pizza party lets children make their own pizza. The Pirates or Princesses party comes with a costumed VIP Host and the children can come dressed up to add to the fun!

The Animal Tales Adventure party gives VIP access to a tour of our collection of animals and the chance to feed goats, ponies, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and chipmunks.

If the weather permits the Go-Kart Challenge gives your party exclusive use of the track for half an hour.

The SHOOT the Kids! is an exclusive and additional half hour professional photo shoot by Cocoon with A5 prints for each party child to take away.

All our party prices are inclusive of a private party room, a personal party host, party Invitations, buffet, sweet bags, juice & a pudding and adult entry.

spread sandwiches on white and brown bread, mini sausages, cheese pizza and garlic bread.

FORWARD TO THE FUTURE Some objects have changed the world. Things that were commonplace and probably in most homes have had a lasting affect on the way we live our lives. If you were to imagine how things were before they were invented it would be diffi cult to explain to young people of today how clothes were washed, how food was cooked, or how we communicated with each other. By looking at objects from the museum collections (whether actual or from images) and perhaps talking about them and even try to design new things which could change the world in the future, me might get a better insight into how the different generations view the world! 1.00pm - 3.00pm. Brazilian Soccer Schools are truly global – they have a presence in 63 countries around the world, and over 200 franchisees in the UK alone, with local franchisees now in Scarborough and Hull.

Brazilian Soccer Schools is the ‘brain-child’ of Simon Clifford,a PE teacher who, like hundreds of teachers across the UK, gave his own time to coach local children after school. With Clifford’s drive and enthusiasm and Brazilian World Cup winner Juninho’s tchnical knowledge, the fi rst Brazilian Soccer School was born. Now, thirteen years on, Clifford has over one million children enrolled in his soccer academies and his graduates are beginning to work their way into top fl ight clubs, BSS has even seen it’s fi rst full international player in Micah Richards. Other graduates include Theo Walcott (Arsenal & England), John Bostock (Tottenham Hotspur),

Oliver Hotchkiss & Aidan White (Leeds United) as well of course as John Farnworth (World Freestyle Champion).

The central aim of Brazilian Soccer Schools is to encourage children to spend longer working with the ball practicing and developing their skills. Children at BSS spend roughly two-thirds of their time working with the size two Futebol de Salão balls and the remaining third with a conventional ball working on areas such as longer

passing, shooting, heading and of course match situations.

Throughout all ages from 4 to 18 years, our coaching focuses on developing fully the technical skills of every child. Skills from basic to complex are broken down into easily learnable phases for children and then

these moves are taught and repeated many times

until the children become accomplished at performing

these skills.

BSS are changing the way that football is played at the highest

level, by changing the way that we train children to play the

game, however this

cannot happen without children spending increased time practicing their skills.

At BSS we also strongly encourage the ethos that it is vitally important for children to become good people before they can

become good football players.

saCLa’ tEaMs uP WItH ruGBY FEstIVaLssaCLa’, the famous Italian pesto-pioneers, today announced a ground-breaking partnership with the rugby Football union in which they will sponsor aLL the grass-root rugby festivals across England this year involving over 40,000 youngsters.

the deal builds on the success of the sacla’ business relationship with the former England rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio and last year’s launch of the Dallaglio by sacla’ range of sauces.

One child, aged between 10 and 16 years, from each of the 100 sacla’ rugby festivals will be offered the unique chance to join Lawrence Dallaglio at the exclusive sacla’ National training Day at twickenham stadium on saturday 5th June.

the lucky youngsters will be chosen based on qualities of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, the Core Values of the sport.

Lawrence said: “after working with sacla’ on our delicious range of pasta sauces, we felt that we had struck up a winning partnership and it seemed to be a very natural extension of both our relationship and our shared passion to get involved with the rFu in the festivals.

the royal Horticultural society (rHs) has made a step towards improving climate control with the erection of a 20m high, 15kw wind turbine in its Garden at Harlow Carr in Harrogate. In conjunction with a whole spectrum of additional renewable energy solutions, energy produced by the wind turbine will be used to provide heat, power and light to the Garden’s new, carbon neutral Learning Centre and Library. On completion in summer 2010, the Learning Centre will be used to teach about 10,000 gardeners every year the benefits of sustainable gardening.

sharing the knowledgeIn spring 2010, the rHs is holding the last of three knowledge sharing seminars and workshops about the construction of the £3M Learning Centre. the first was at the commencement of the project; the second, in september 2009, included an exhibition of green energy solutions and a tour of the construction site. the events aim to help architects, engineers, project managers and building specifiers glean information on a host of environmentally sustainable products and services and understand the challenges in integrating applications such as used in the Learning Centre project. to register your interest for a free place at the event in spring 2010, please email [email protected] or [email protected].

The RHS’ new wind turbine will provide power for the new, green Learning Centre and Library.
