Page 1 Year 3 Home Learning Week beginning: 06.07.2020 “Underwater” week Dear Parents/Carers and Children, We trust you had a good weekend. Welcome to another week – we are getting so close to the summer holidays now ! It is unfortunate that many of us have had to change our plans for the summer but we are practising the art of acceptance and remaining optimistic that we can still enjoy some down-time and find ways to have fun. We have certainly seen how creative all of you are - and we know that you will make the best of things. This week’s learning theme is UNDERWATER and our focus is mainly on the oceans and seas. However, should you be able to get to the river or canal on your walking routes, why not take advantage of the opportunities that Macclesfield’s waterways provide to talk about these habitats and maybe even grab a fishing net and a jar and see what you can find. Earlier this year, BBC One’s Blue Planet Live highlighted the health of the oceans, featuring extraordinary marine encounters across the world. You can still access video links and clips from these Blue Planet broadcasts here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/live-lessons/blue- planet-live-lesson/zn7tkmn . Also, a quick search on Netflix brings up several ocean related factual programmes that your family might enjoy together, so that’s definitely worth a look, if you have it. A week is too short to cram everything into, so if you have a particular interest in a theme that isn’t quite in the planning, feel free to diversify. We are aware that we have lots of dolphin, shark and turtle fans in Year 3. Thank you enormously for all your recent encouraging messages, thank-yous and smiles. We are proud to be Year 3 teachers and we have been happy to help folk where we can! And remember, shipmates …

Dear Parents/Carers and Children,

We trust you had a good weekend.

You can still access video links and clips from these Blue Planet broadcasts here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/live-lessons/blue-planet-live-lesson/zn7tkmn.

With our very best wishes, Mrs Allen, Miss Mason and Mrs May

English - Collecting ideas for an under the sea list poem.

-In your purple book, draw an under the sea scene. Try to draw as many things as you can think of that exist under our oceans e.g., sharks, coral reefs, vibrant fish, octopi, jellyfish, shipwrecks, stingrays, seaweed, whales, dolphins, seahorses etc. Scroll down to page 12 to see some pictures for some ideas . Also, use the internet to find some interesting and unique creatures which exist beneath our oceans.-Add colour to your scene with pencil crayon, felt tips or even paint if you have it!-Think of a title for your picture and be creative e.g.

This one has the title drawn like seaweed! It doesn’t have to be ‘Under the Sea.’ You could have ‘The Wonders of the Oceans’ or ‘Life under the Sea.’ It’s entirely up to you.

English

Handwriting - write these with correct joins . Do one row of each.

Spelling – Check up on your Y3 spelling list words – the list was in the

Maths: PictogramsA pictogram is a type of graph to show information. Complete the pictogram questions on page 8.TIPSA pictogram needs a key to show the value that each picture or symbol represents.Always be careful to look at the key. Include a key when making your own pictogram.General – Science/GeogrpahyDid you know that our oceans have different layers, a bit like the rainforests? The different layers have different conditions and are home to different types of sealife. Do your own research to find out more or watch this video.https://youtu.be/1ArwPfNgSKEMake a display about the layers of the ocean in any way you choose. You can research the layers on the internet or there is some help on the PBS website on the Y3 class page. This could be a short activity if, you just choose to draw an ocean scene on a small scale e.g. on a cereal packet or or it could take a few afternoons if you make a bigger display. The back of a door might be a good place for an extra large display! You need to include some different shades of blue for the layers, some labels, and some pictures.

Alternative : Make an ocean in a jar. This video shows you how to make a model of an ocean in a jar:https://youtu.be/15CL4D41e30

Maths: PictogramsComplete the pictogram questions on page 9.

General – PSHCE/SCIENCESometimes oil is spilled or leaked from ships called tankers or from undersea pipes into the ocean, causing harm to sealife and the enviromnent. It can be expensive and time consuming to clean up.

You are going to do an experiment to test ways to clean up an oil spill:You need:a tinfoil or plastic tub water a spoonCooking oil cotton wool washing up liquidPebbles /small rocks tissue/paper towel spongefeather flour

A)Set up a tub/tray of water.Make it look like an ocean environment by adding some pebbles etc.Now pour some cooking oil on the water - about 2 tablespoons.Does it sink or float? If you can find a feather, dip the feather in the oil. What does this tell you about the effect of an oil spill on birdlife? Can you insert/build something that keeps the oil spill in one part of the tray and stop it spreading?

B) Now explore the best way to remove oil from water, using the equipment you have. This video is a good guide if you are unsure of what to do.https://youtu.be/l1qOuDa-8LQ

Extension :What if you use salty water like the sea ? Is the oil spill easier or more difficult to clean up? Recording:Record what you found out by writing your observations about each method you try and write a conclusion to explain what you thought was the best method to clean up an oil spill and why.

English : Create an under the sea list poem.

-Today, you are going to write your list poem.-In your red English book, write the title you created yesterday.

Follow the simple structure below to create your own under the sea list poem,

The Wonders of the Oceans

The sea is a shooting of ferocious sharks,The sea is a floating of dangling jellyfish,

The sea is a swirling of clown fish,The sea is a stretching of colourful tube sponges etc.

It would be fantastic to then illustrate your poem with drawings of the creatures/plants you have chosen!

Maths: Bar ChartsBar charts are another type of graph to show information.Complete the bar chart questions from page 10.TIP:Be careful to notice the values on the axes of a bar chart. The numbers might not always increase by one. General: French Sea Creatures

Watch the video and learn how to say sea animals in French.https://youtu.be/64pQvZhIQOU

Some of the French words for sea creatures are very similar in the way that they look or sound to the English word for the same sea creature.French words that sound/look similar to the equivalent word English words are called cognates.

Draw and label 7 sea creatures in French. (Just 7, as there are a lot!) Write any masculine French words (un) in blue. Write any feminine words (une) in red. If you think the word is a cognate, underline it.

Here is the spelling/vocabulary you need. (The English meanings are on the video!)

Les Animaux de la Mer un dauphin une baleine un orqueun requin un poisson une méduseune tortue une pieuvre un hippocampeune crevette un homard un crabeun pingouin une moule une huîtreun phoque une étoile de mer

English : Create a poster persuading people to save the oceans from plastic.

Research Focus on Plastic Pollution: Click on the link below and discover the facts and figures on how plastic pollution is harming our magnificent ocean life. It also gives you ten top tips on reducing plastic pollution.

https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/kids-club/cool-kids/general-kids-club/plastic-in-the-ocean/

If you do not have access to the internet, here are some key facts about plastic in our seas:

90% of seabirds eat plastic rubbish, mistaking it for food. By 2050, there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish. Five trillion pieces of plastic are floating in the world’s seas. It takes 400 years for plastic to break down. 700 different species of animals are believed to be severely

threatened by the plastic pollution in our seas.

-In your English book, add the title, ‘Plastic Pollution in our Oceans.’

-Using bullet points or a spider diagram, record 5 key facts about plastic pollution in our seas.-You might also want to add some top tips for reducing plastic pollution e.g. say NO to plastic straws.-You could add some illustrations to your facts and tips.

MATHS: Bar chartsComplete the questions on page 11. General – Art: Paul Klee Fish MagicPaul Klee is a Swiss artist known for his child-like style. When he taught art classes in his home, he would ask students to watch the tropical fish in his large aquarium. Look at the picture entitled “Fish Magic” on page 7.

Notice the dark background and very bright fish. Notice that it is a fantasy undersea picture because it contains things that should

not be there – flowers, a clock, a knife.

Task : Create your own Fish Magic fantasy undersea picture. Methods - a)Scratch art: colour-in squares/stripes in coloured wax crayons to cover the whole page then paint over in black paint. When the paint is dry, draw by scratching off the paint e.g. using a nail file . B) Crayon resist: reverse the stle of the original picture so that the background is colourful but the fish and objects are black. Draw creatures with black crayon and paint the background on top. Scratch Art Crayon Resist

Alternative Activity Choice:Make some salt dough and create some 3D sea creatures . These can make nice gifts or decorations.

working on.

English: Create a poster to persuade people to save the oceans from plastic.-Look at all the great posters on pages 13 and 14 to make people think about how plastic pollution is really harming our marine life. I think the whale with the plastic shooting out of its blowhole is really effective, and the way one person has used plastic to create the shape of a seahorse. Look at the great titles they have used e.g. Save the Ocean, Keep the Sea Plastic Free etc. -Your mission is to create a poster like the ones below to make people realise how much harm plastic is doing to our oceans, and, as a result, to REDUCE the plastic they are using from day-to-day.-Your mission is to create a poster like the ones below to make people realise how much harm plastic is doing to our oceans, and, as a result, to REDUCE the plastic they are using from day-to-day.

General: Science - Food Chains. This is an example of an ocean foodchain.

A foodchain is the sequence of what is eaten by whom, in a habitat. The arrows on this foodchain diagram mean “is eaten by” and show how energy is passed from the start of the food chain to the end. (The seaweed is eaten by the crab, which is eaten by the squid, which is eaten by the seal. ) The seaweed is called a producer because it produces its own food -it doesn’t feed on other creatures. The crab is called a primary consumer because is is the first thing in the food chain that eats something else. The squid is called a secondary consumer - it is the second thing in the food chain that eats something else. The seal is called the tertiary consumer- the third thing in this food chain that eats something else.

Task:1.Draw the same food chain. Using the information given above, add the following labels to it: is eaten by producer primary consumersecondary consumer tertiary consumer

2. Add labels to show which are predators and which are prey. (Some are both)3. Now draw some more sealife food chains of your own and label them. There are some resources to give you ideas on the Y3 class page or you can do your own research.
