Information Texts: Return to Great Mythenden! Starting today, and for the rest of the next 2 weeks, we will be starting to put together out very own brochure or poster or prospectus for Great Mythenden school, in the form of a non- chronological report, which we discussed yesterday! Looking back to your work yesterday, you’ll notice that, within the model text, the first key features are the title (or heading) followed by the introduction. These are what we will be creating today! The goal is to write a paragraph which summarises what the information in the text will be about, but for Magical Mythenden! Step 1- Let’s come up with a strong title! We want people to be hooked by our bold, colourful, exciting school, and the first thing that catches your eye should be the title! On the Grey Missenden prospectus we can see that the title is in a different (if plain) font, with a grey underline, to make it stand out from the rest of the text. There’s even a logo at the end! On a separate piece of paper, (or online if you’re Distance Learning), start a word document with a big, bold title!

Information Texts: Return to Great Mythenden!Starting today, and for the rest of the next 2 weeks, we will be starting to put together out very own brochure or poster or prospectus for Great Mythenden school, in the form of a non-chronological report, which we discussed yesterday!Looking back to your work yesterday, you’ll notice that, within the model text, the first key features are the title (or heading) followed by the introduction.

On a separate piece of paper, (or online if you’re Distance Learning), start a word document with a big, bold title!Be careful of your wording-

“Welcome” is very polite and may still work for Great Mythenden, you may just want to make it more colourful! It should be short and snappy to get attention quick, but look beautiful.

Step 2- Where is the school and how does it look? Let’s assume our school is in England, probably in Missenden somewhere, but that it is magical and looks different and has different surroundings…let’s use

these pictures to help use think about what the school could look like, inside and out:

We are going to write some description about this in a minute, so choose wisely, or imagine your own variation!Write a list of 4 of the most important things about how it looks and write a short sentence to describe it, like this:

Orchard – The trees surrounding the school were laden with lusciously ripe fruits. It’s said that a bite of their polished, emerald apples is enough to nourish a child for the whole school day!

Tower- Tall towers soar above the school, circled by crows and ravens who sing songs joyously above. These towers were sturdily built from terracotta bricks, molded into humongous cylinders.

Great Hall – Languorously, the Great Halls doors lay open, waiting patiently for eager learners to enter and bask in the school’s knowledge and warmth.

Step 3- How could children get to school? Now that we know where the school is and what it looks like, what is the best way for magical children to reach it? Again, you can choose an example from

here, or come up with your own magical and exciting method, alongside the usual ones!

List 2 or more methods, and describe why it would be best, like this: Broomstick – There are broom cupboards throughout school where your

labelled broomstick can stay until you need it to travel home.

Step 4- Plan and write up your descriptive, informative paragraph! Now that you’ve collected some lovely description and information, you need to think about how this will fit into a paragraph.

How can children get to the school?

This should include your ideas from Step 3!

However, you could also… Come by hot air balloon, as Professor Magee

does Use your magical running boots!

What is the nicest thing about Great Mythenden School?

Now it is your turn, to fill in the outline for your own descriptive paragraph!

What is the nicest thing about Great Mythenden School?

You’ve filled the plan, using sentences or bullet points, now you can see how I could make this into a paragraph…

You’re needed at Great Mythenden ! All of the children of Great Mythenden school are magical, exciting, interesting and funny- Just like you! The school is always busy, and since lessons are always fun, children are always learning! Great Mythenden school has huge, well-equipped classrooms and is accessible to all learners. With helpful maps, you can easily navigate the tall, terracotta towers to listen to the birds singing joyfully! Most children come into school by broomstick, because of the great parking, however, you could also come by hot air balloon, as Professor Magee does, or use your magical running boots, if you’re in a hurry! The best thing about ‘Magical Mythenden’ is that everyone is kind. No-one ever goes hungry, thanks to the orchard surrounding the school, as just a bite of their lusciously ripe, polished, emerald apples is enough to nourish a child for the whole school day!

You can see that I’ve re-arranged this slightly so that I can get in as much informative detail as possible. I have made this as formal as I can, whilst still being fun and persuasive, as a prospectus is basically and advert for the school! If you need help organising your ideas remember to talk it through at home or contact your teacher for a little help 😊

Write up your own ideas now, using your plan to help and trying to include these:

Hot and Spicy: Have a clear sentence for each question of your plan, challenge yourself to use a conjunction (such as “and, but, also, however”) in each of these!

Mega Hot: Vary your punctuation (?,!,…) and sentence starters by using adverbial openers or other sentence signposts.

Are You Nuts?!: Try to add persuasive features, (such as emotive language, repetition, alliteration, speaking to the reader or the power of three) to convince children to come to our school!
