Debby describes our HCA Project in PERU!

This year, the Holy Childhood Association is support-ing St Joseph's Catholic School, at the Chiriaco Mission, located on an island on the Chiriaco River, in Northern Peru in the State of Amazonas. The school contains about 550 Indigenous students, most of whom board. The project is to improve the condition and operation of the cooking and eating facilities on the mission. The indigenous people in this area belong to the Aguaruna (Awajún), group. They face challenging living conditions, isolation and a lack of basic services. More information about the mission comes from our reporter on the ground: Anne.

David: Here are some basic facts about the country of Peru in general:

OFFICIAL NAME: Republic of PeruFORM OF GOVERNMENT: Constitutional republicCAPITAL: LimaPOPULATION: 30,147,935OFFICIAL LANGUAGES: Spanish, QuechuaMONEY: Nuevo SolAREA: 496,224 square miles (1,285,216 sqare kilometers)MAJOR MOUNTAIN RANGES: AndesMAJOR RIVERS: Amazon, Ucayali, Madre de Dios

The colors symbolize the Incas and their lasting impact on the country. The coat of arms features a llama and chichona tree, important symbols of Peru, and a centered cornucopia representing pros-perity. See if you can design and colour your ag.

St Joseph's is a boarding school that cares for approximately 550 children. It is staed by the Servant of Saint Joseph Sisters. The children are from indigenous families who are very poor and have diculty getting basic needs such as food, clean water and an education. At the Mission the children receive an education, healthy meals, and learn about the God who loves them. They also learn they are brothers and sisters in Christ with children from all the other communities.

Peru is home to Boa Con-strictors, one of the largest snakes in the world. They are non-poisonous but still very deadly. They ambush their prey, which means that they will hide and wait for something yummy to go by and then

do a surprise attack! They use their icking tongue to pick up the scent. They then coil their bodies around the prey and with each breath of the prey they will constrict, or squeeze, their coils just a little tighter until the animal can no longer breath. Their prey consists of birds, lizards, frogs and small mammals. Larger Boas will even eat monkeys, pigs or deer. It is probably not a good idea for you to get to close!!

The rivers ows through jungle areas that are home to 64 rare bird species, 26 that are only found in Peru. Animal and plant life is abundant and extremely varied in this area. The river is home to grey and pink dolphins, Amazonian manatees, Giant River Otters, Black Caimans and giant South American River Turtles. Land animals include Jaguars and several varieties of monkeys. The Black Spider Monkey, the Orange-chested Spider Monkey, the Woolly Monkey, and the Howler Monkey are all considered endangered, and are protected in Reserves, such as The Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, one of the largest in the country.

The Chiriaco Mission is on the Chiriaco River (Rio Chiriaco), which is a tributary of the Maranon River in the province of Amazonas. This Maranon is the prin-cipal or mainstream source of the Amazon River.Take a trip on this great river. Go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LgGBcnkU9o You will enjoy a great ride!

Jaguars are the biggest cats in the Americas and the third largest cats in the world. They only eat meat. In the wild, jaguars will use their speed and stealth to hunt deer, monkeys, birds, frogs, sh, alligators and small rodents. If wild food is scarce, these large cats will also hunt domes-tic livestock. They don't like to share their food. Would you like one for a PET?

Colour your new pet. Try to make him look look like the photo! Make a copy of the jaguar body parts. Cut them out, colour them and glue them on a lunch bag to make a puppet!

St. Joseph's Parish in Grand Falls-Windsor, NL

The children of St. Emile Parish in Legal, AB have been busy collecting coins for their parish’s

“Coins for Children’s Charity” program and have donated some of it to the Holy Childhood Association. They have truly celebrated Pentecost in a very giving way!

Cuy is a guinea pig! The meat, which is quite bony, is usually baked or barbecued on a spit and served whole—often with the head on. It has a pleasant, gamy taste like that of rabbit or wild fowl. Don't leave Peru without trying it!
