Environmental protection and serviceThe PRIMEQUEST systems have a long life expectancy, not only because of the excellent expansion options they offer, but also because of the quality of the products.

As technology continues to develop, however, ever greater volumes of data will need to be processed. More and more demands are being placed on storage capacity, speed and computer system design. So when you eventually want to replace your PRIMEQUEST system with a newer model and dispose of the old device, we can also offer you support in this area.

Recycling old computer equipment is already a tradition at Fujitsu Technology Solutions: We have been redeeming and reusing old computer systems for many years now. Even at the design stage, particular emphasis is placed on the reusability of components and materials.

Your PRIMEQUEST system is manufactured to the greatest possible extent from environ-mentally friendly materials that can be fully recycled.

Read on through the next sections for a brief look at some of the measures we have intro-duced in an effort to protect the environment as well as our tips and suggestions for environ-mentally friendly handling of your system.

Environmentally friendly product design and development

This product has been designed in accordance with Fujitsu Technology Solutions Guideline FSC 03230 “environmentally friendly product design and development”.

This means that the designers have taken into account critical factors such as durability, selection of materials and coding, emissions, packaging, the ease with which the product can be dismantled and the extent to which it can be recycled.

This saves resources and thus reduces the harm done to the environment.

Production and development of the PRIMEQUEST systems are certified in accordance with the environment management system DIN ISO 14001.

Note on saving energy

If your device does not have to remain switched on permanently, only switch it on when you are ready to use it and then switch it off again during long breaks and when you finish your work.

The effect of temperature onthe reliability of IT installations

High ambient temperatures and the associated high component temperatures have adeleterious effect on all technical products and thus also on IT installations.

The following areas are particularly affected:

• FunctionalityThe propagation time of electrical signals increases with temperature. If the tem-perature increases beyond certain limits (at present approx. 100 °C crystal tempera-ture) this will lead to malfunctions, particularly in the case of fast processors.

• WearStorage media, and in this case particularly magnetic tapes, suffer from wear due tofriction. The amount of wear increases with temperature, and beyond a certain point(from about 45 °C tape temperature) it rises drastically.

• Failure rate and MTBFThe failure rate of a component, λ, is generally determined by mechanisms whosereaction time increases when heated and thus at higher temperatures. This meansthat the failure rate will also increase with temperature. The actual rate of increasewill depend on numerous additional factors, such as different component technology, where the component is installed, and so on.

The measure of a system’s reliability is generally given in terms of its MTBF (meantime between failures), which is the reciprocal of the failure rate (MTBF = 1/λ ). Ac-cording to the information in the document MIL-HDBK-217F (Reliability Prediction ofElectronic Equipment. Department of Defense, Washington, D.C. 1990) the variationwith ambient temperature of the MTBF value for an IT installation follows the pathshown in the following diagram. This graph is normalized on the MTBF value at anambient temperature of 25 °C.

You can see from this diagram that increasing the ambient temperature by around15 °C will halve the MTBF.

Installation instructions

IT installations are generally designed in such a way that cooling air is drawn in throughthe door at the front and the warmed air expelled through the back of the system cabi-net.

The volume of air actually throughput will depend on the power of the fans that areused; for a fully configured high-end system it may be as much as 1200 m3/h. The heatthat needs to be extracted corresponds to the mains power consumption and this willdepend on the configuration. High-end systems may convert up to 4 kW to heat.

The following points should be noted to ensure optimal cooling:

In the machine room

• Provide an air-conditioning system with sufficient power to deal with the amount ofheat that will have to be extracted.

• Make air intake available from the false floor near to the front of the cabinets.

• Install suitable floor plates (e. g. slotted) to provide the required throughput of air.

• Extract exhaust air from the area behind the system cabinets.

• Always arrange cabinets with fronts and backs side by side (see the followingillustration).

• Where cabinets are arranged in several rows, always position the rows front-to-frontor back-to-back (see the following illustration).

• Make sure that rows are no closer together than the installation distance (1 m).

• Do not place isolated units in the corner of a room; they should be at least 1 m awayfrom all walls.

Inside the system

• Where units are not fully configured all vacant slots must be covered with blankingplates.

• Cables must be arranged to obstruct the air-flow as little as possible.

• Keep the openings for air intake and outlet clear.

Checklist for cooling-related malfunctions

Temperature of the input air (room temperature) is too high(desired temperature < 25 °C, maximum value < 32 °C)

Measuring points

The temperature should be measured at two places within the air intake area at the frontof the system:1. At floor level underneath the front door of the cabinet.2. In the middle of the front door of the cabinet.

Check the following

• Is the air-conditioner powerful enough and is it working properly?

• Have the cabinets been arranged as specified in the above installation instructions?

• Are the air intake and outlet openings of the room’s ventilation system located asspecified in the above installation instructions?

Temperature of the exhaust air from the system is too high = not enoughthroughput(desired temperature < Tinput + 10 °C)

Measuring points

The temperature should be measured at three places at the rear of the system:1. At the back of the cabinet in the middle of the back door.2. At the back of the cabinet next to the top air outlet opening on the back door.3. At the back of the cabinet 0.1 m below the room ceiling.

Check the following

• Are the cabinet’s air intake and outlet openings clear?

• Have the cables been positioned as directed by the installation instructions?

• Have all the necessary blanking plates been installed?

Reader Feedback• The Remote Customer Support System (REMCS) is not supported in Europe.• In this manual, it is assumed that two BMMs (optional products) can be connected to a single I/O

unit and IOX; this is reflected both in the explanations and in the figures included in this manual. At present, however, the PRIMEQUEST 420 series supports only connection to one BMM (BMM#0) per I/O unit and IOX.

• If you find any errors or unclear statements in this manual, please fill in the "Reader’s Comment Form" sheet at the back of this manual and forward it to the address indicated at the bottom of the sheet.

1.5 Cooling Air and Exhaust Flows

This section explains the cooling air and exhaust flows of each cabinet.

Cooling air and exhaust flows of the PRIMEQUEST 520A/520/420 main unit (Figure 1.5)Cooling air and exhaust flows of the PCI_Box (Figure 1.6)

When planning the installation of the equipment, it is important to consider the flows of cooling air and exhaust. If the equipment is installed without giving proper consideration to these flows, a cabinet or rack may draw in the exhaust from another cabinet or rack and be adversely affected as a result. Particularly, a device that monitors the temperature of intake air may continue to output the alarm indicating abnormal intake temperature.

2.2.3 Notes on cabling PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420When determining the total length of the cable to be connected to the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420, allow for an extra length of cable for pulling out the units.

PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 needs to be pulled out from the rack for maintenance. The cable is routed with the cable-management system. For the cable-management system, extra cable length of 2 m (6.6 ft.) is required.

Use a sheathless optical cable for the fibre channel cable. (If the sheath fibre channel cable has been laid, connect a sheathless optical Fibre Channel cable with an adapter (DCBL-FCE02 (SC-LC: 2m (6.6 ft.)), DCBL-FCE05 (SC-LC: 5m (16.4 ft.)), DCBL-FCG02 (LC-LC: 2m (6.6 ft.)) or DCBL-FCG05 (LC-LC: 5m (16.4 ft.))) to the sheath fibre channel cable.)Avoid laying the power cable close to metal cables such as RS232C or SCSI cables. If cables need to be crossed, avoid laying the sheathless optical cable under power cables or metal cables.

2.3.3 Power distribution boxPRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 is equipped with one power distribution box as standard. For use in Japan, the power distribution box contains four outlet groups each of which contains one overcurrent protector (CB) and two outlets as shown in Figure 2.15.

Figure 2.15 Power distribution box (for use in Japan)

The maximum rated current per output group is 12 A (for use in Japan). The maximum rated current per power distribution box (total current for four output groups) is 24 A.

Power cables of the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 and the PCI_Box are connected to each output group on a one-to-one basis.

The overcurrent protector (CB) protects each output group only. When power cables are connected to two outlets of an output group, be careful not to exceed the maximum rated current of the group.

When connecting power cables from the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 and the PCI_Box to power distribution boxes, connect the power cables to different output groups.Do not connect for redundancy a power cable from a peripheral unit to the open outlet of the output group to which one power cable is already connected.

2.5 AC Cable Connection under a Free-Access Floor (Only for Use inside Japan and General Use outside Japan)

If AC cables are connected to the power distribution box (or main unit, PCI_Box) under a free-access floor, it is recommended the underfloor height be 300 mm (11.8 in.) or more in consideration of the shape of the AC cable connector, cable bending radius (see Figure 2.17 (1)).

However, if the underfloor height is less than 300 mm (11.8 in.), place outlets sideways (see Figure 2.17 (2)).

Prepare an outlet near the unit.

Remark 1: This drawing shows the Fujitsu 19-inch global rack with the main unit as an example.

CHAPTER 3 Precautions Pertaining to Delivery and Installation

3.2 Earthquake Preparedness Measures

Earthquake preparedness measures are intended to prevent computers from falling over, to ensure the safety of operators, to prevent damage, and to enable the quick recovery of systems. Fujitsu has standardized the following techniques to prevent damage to computer systems resulting from an earthquake.

Securing techniques:Techniques that secure the equipment in place prevent toppling by providing resistance to the force of an earthquake.

The extent to which this technique is required depends upon the following factors:

Floor vibration levels at the location where the equipment is installedWhether or not a free-access floor is being usedStructure of the equipment

When selecting construction techniques for earthquake-preparedness measures and before starting construction work, contact Fujitsu's construction department.

Appendix A RacksThe PRIMEQUEST 520/420 rack-mount type (12U) and PCI_Box rack-mount type (4U) supplied by Fujitsu Technology Solutions are mounted or are to be mounted on a PRIMECENTER rack, which is the standard rack series used by Fujitsu Technology Solutions.

The system unit and the PCI_Box can also be mounted on a 19-inch rack that conforms to the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) standards. These racks must satisfy the structural conditions described in A.2, "Rack Mounting". That section A.2 assumes that the PRIMEQUEST 520/420 is normally installed in a rack manufactured by Fujitsu Ltd., but it can be read as conceptual information for using any other rack.

A detailed description for installing a PRIMEQUEST 520/420 in a PRIMECENTER rack is part of the maual PRIMEQUEST 520/420 Installation Instructions (U41658-J-Z816-x-76) edited by Fujitsu Technology Solutions.

A.1 Where you can find information on PRIMECENTER racks

The PRIMECENTER racks are supplied with a Technical Manual: "PRIMECENTER Rack System for PRIMERGY, PRIMEPOWER, BS2000, STORAGE" (U41282-J-Z156-x-74). Here you can find the technical specifications of the PRIMECENTER rack models and their expansion.

A.2 Rack Mounting

The PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 (including peripherals) has been developed, and its operation guaranteed based on an assumption that it is mounted in the 19-inch global rack manufactured by Fujitsu. For safe operation of this equipment mounted in a Fujitsu 19-inch global rack, the conditions specified in Appendix A.2.1, "Conditions for mounting in Fujitsu 19-inch global racks," must be satisfied.

Appendix A Racks

If the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 is mounted not in a Fujitsu 19-inch global rack but in another type of rack such as a rack manufactured by another company, validation (verification of cooling in the rack and the rack strength) cannot be performed and operation cannot be guaranteed. In such cases, this verification is entirely the customer's responsibility.

If another company's rack must be used, refer to Appendix A.2.2, "Conditions for mounting in another company's rack," and consider appropriate racks.

A.2.1 Conditions for mounting in Fujitsu 19-inch global racksThis section describes the conditions for unit mounting in the 19-inch global racks manufactured by Fujitsu.

Two types of Fujitsu 19-inch global rack are available: one type has a stabilizer for preventing the rack from toppling, and the other type does not have it (the rack is designed to be secured to the floor). Order the appropriate type according to (4), "Selecting the rack type."

(1) Rack stabilityTo maintain the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 or add an optional unit to the system, the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 unit must be pulled out from the front of the rack. Appropriate measures such as securing the rack to the floor must be taken to prevent the rack from toppling when the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 unit is pulled out. There are two methods for preventing the rack from toppling. If the number of mounted units is not more than the recommended number of mounted units as indicated in Table A.1 and the mounting height not higher than the recommended mounting height indicated in the same table, use the first method. Otherwise, use the second method.

Table A.1 Recommended number of units to be mounted in racks

a) Up to the recommended number of units is mounted and the mounting height is 24U or lower.

In principle, the recommended method of securing the rack to the floor is the same as that used if more than the recommended number of units is mounted or the mounting height is higher than 24U.

However, if the rack cannot be secured to the floor, mount a pull-out stabilizer supplied with the main unit (see Figure A.1).

To perform maintenance work or add an optional unit, pull out the pull-out stabilizer forward before pulling out the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 unit, as shown in Figure A.1.

Note: A rack without the stabilizer must always be secured to the floor even if the number of mounted units in the rack is less than the recommended number or the mounting height is lower than the recommended height of 24U.

Appendix A Racks

Secure the rack in one of the following ways:

Note that because all rack-securing methods will require some construction work, a specialist will need to be consulted.

Securing the rack with bolt stabilizersAffix bolt stabilizers (*1) to the front and back and sides of the rack and anchor the stabilizers to the building structure (floor).

*1: The bolt stabilizers comprise an optional product. The following kit needs to be purchased:Earthquake proofing kit: MC-R1ST11 (Kit for the Fujitsu 19-inch global/basic rack.)MC-R1ST21 (Kit for the Fujitsu 19-inch global/expansion rack.)Note that the pull-out stabilizer supplied as standard is not required if the earthquake proofing kit (MC-R1ST11) is to be used. Note also that the standard pull-out stabilizer and the earthquake proofing kit (MC-R1ST11) cannot be used jointly. In cases where the pull-out stabilizer is not used, store it in a safe place in case the racks are moved in the feature.

Figure A.2 Securing the rack with bolt stabilizers

Securing the rack with leveling feetUse the threaded holes at the bottom of the rack leveling feet to anchor the leveling feet to the building structure (floor) (See Figure A.3). The rack leveling feet that are already built into the rack structure can be anchored with M20 bolts.

Note: The pull-out stabilizer supplied as standard is not required if the rack is secured with leveling feet. However, in consideration of the possibility that the racks will be moved in the future, Fujitsu recommends jointly using the standard pull-out stabilizers. In cases where the pull-out stabilizer is not used, store it in a safe place in case the racks are moved in the feature.

(3) Other conditionsThe Fujitsu 19-inch global rack comes with blank panels for covering the front of unused space where no unit is mounted. If warm exhaust air from the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 unit flows to the front and reenters the unit, it may trigger a temperature alarm and cause a problem.

Be sure to cover the front of unused space by mounting the blank panels.

(4) Selecting the rack typeThe methods of selecting and installing Fujitsu 19-inch global racks are explained below.

1 Consider the requirements concerning the earthquake-resistance level and building conditions, and determine whether to secure the rack to the floor when installing it.

If earthquake preparedness measures do not include securing the rack to the floorIn this method, the installed rack can withstand an acceleration force of up to 20 gal in a general-use building during an earthquake. The stabilizer mounted to the rack is used to prevent the rack from toppling, such as during maintenance of mounted units. If earthquake preparedness measures include securing the rack to the floorIn this method, the installed rack can withstand an acceleration force of up to 1000 gal in a general-use building during an earthquake. The rack is secured to the floor to prevent the rack from toppling, such as during maintenance of mounted units.

2 Select the rack type.

To install the rack without taking earthquake preparedness measures: Select a rack with the stabilizer -> Go to step 5.

To install the rack with earthquake preparedness measures taken: Select a rack without the stabilizer -> Go to step 3.

Note: Even if the building and floor where the rack will be installed are equipped with functionality for earthquake preparedness, the rack requires a mechanism for preventing it from toppling, such as during maintenance of mounted units. Unless the rack will be secured to the floor, be sure to select a rack with the stabilizer regardless of the building conditions.

3 If the rack will be secured to the floor, confirm the method of securing it.

If the earthquake proofing kit is used to secure the rack to the floor -> Go to step 4.

If the leveling feet are used to secure the rack to the floor -> Go to step 5.

Note 1: The only two methods that can be selected as the method of securing the rack are using the leveling feet to secure it or using the earthquake proofing kit to secure it. Select the appropriate method with consideration of the condition at the installation site, such as with regards to the construction of the floor.

Note 2: No operation can be performed on a rack without the stabilizer until the rack is secured to the floor. The rack must be secured to the floor to prevent it from toppling, such as during maintenance of mounted units.

4 To use the earthquake proofing kit to secure the rack, an optional earthquake proofing kit is required. The appropriate kits must be selected and prepared separately for basic racks and expansion racks.

5 Issue a construction order for installation.

If the earthquake proofing kit for a basic rack is purchased for an expansion rack, the parts that are mounted on the sides of the rack are extra.

If the earthquake proofing kit for an expansion rack is purchased for a basic rack, the parts that are mounted on the sides of the rack are required. No operation can be performed on the rack until these parts are mounted.

A.2.2 Conditions for mounting in another company's rackThe PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 (including peripherals) has been developed, and its operation guaranteed based on an assumption that it is mounted in the 19-inch global rack manufactured by Fujitsu.

Note: If a problem arises because the PRIMEQUEST 520A*/520/420 (including peripherals) is mounted in another company's rack, Fujitsu does not guarantee system operation.

Examples:Cooling problem caused by an inadequate cool air supply due to the rack structure, or earthquake-proofing problem due to the insufficient strength of another company's rack
