Thank You!!

Have you ever dreamt of winning the lottery and what you might do with all that money? I “play” the lottery very seldom, but when I do (it’s usually with a group), I admit I think about what I’d do with my share of the winnings.

Having worked in the business world for many years, I have been around people who are worth lots and lots of money. Now in and of itself, money is certainly not a bad thing. It’s what we do with it – or don’t do with it - that can make it bad. Some of the wealthiest people I have known throughout my life are also some of the unhappiest people I’ve known. And why is that?

Whether you win the lottery or earn your wealth through your work, money can be great, or can be devastating in one’s life. Jesus says in the Gospel today: “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” On occasion, I’ll take a look at our checkbook withdrawals. If line after line is “stuff”, it’s time to reassess where our hearts are. If the lines are more charities and God focused, then our hearts are in the right place.

Our youngest son went on a mission trip to Nicaragua several years ago, and he lived and worked in the midst of incredible poverty for ten days. He watched

as the children gathered sticks and with some string, shaped them into a sort of a ball, so they could play

soccer. His one impression was this: Not once did he ever notice any of them complaining or arguing. In his

words, “They were happy all the time!” Think about that and reflect on the message this 18th Sunday of Ordinary Time. How blessed are you! How blessed are

all of us! Deacon Jeff

Treasure by Deacon Bill

In this week’s gospel from Saint Luke, we hear Jesus teaching the people through a parable about what it means to treasure what matters to God above anything in our lives. In order to calm a dispute between two brothers about property rights, he tells the story of a rich man who loves what he has so much that it becomes the most important thing in his life, even more important than his relationship to God. Wealth is a good thing. People with means have the opportunity to do much good with what they have and so many do just that. Most of us, though, can’t really count ourselves among the very wealthy. We get by for the most part and do the best we can. There is one thing, though, that so many of us treasure very highly. That’s our time. We work hard. We need time for ourselves. We have places to go and things to do with our time. And, to top it off, we only have so much of it. For most of us, time can be our greatest treasure. I think it’s so sad that some people tend to treasure their time so dearly that they decide that after a certain amount of minutes spent in worship, they need to leave church, even though Mass hasn’t ended with the departure of the ministers. There are times we celebrate special events as a community during Mass and, naturally, we’re there a bit longer than usual. That’s part of who we are as a community. We even see this issue when the Mass is over in the usual time. At Mass, we realize the presence of Jesus in Word and Sacrament. That presence doesn’t end there. Jesus is also present in the community gathered together as one. If time is our treasure, we need to heed the words of Jesus in today’s gospel. We need to ask ourselves if we are storing treasure for ourselves rather than in what matters to God.

Phishing Scams - Be Aware!

Pastors, Pastoral Leaders and Parish Staff would never contact you via email or text message asking you for “gift cards for someone in need.”

Fraudsters are continually seeking ways to obtain access to your private information. Also, they try to play on our emotions to extract money from us for their personal gain.

Do Not Be Fooled! If you ever receive a message and wonder if the message is legitimate, please call the parish office at (920) 468-5718.

Thank you
