A Message from Pastor Matt In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin and death by joining us to the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Lutheran Baptism Liturgy) So far this year, Prince of Peace has been blessed to have celebrated five baptisms, and as of the publishing of this month’s Vine we are scheduled to have five more by the end of June. The baptisms have included children of various ages, as well as adults. Regardless of age, all baptisms are a celebration of a new life begun in Christ, with the promise of the Holy Spirit, forgiveness of sins, and the good news and hope of life eternal. In our understanding of this great moment, it is a gift from God, not determined by human action or decision, but by God’s grace which is poured out through God’s Son. As Jesus says in John’s Gospel, “You did not choose Me, but I chose you” (John 15:16). And so baptism, which is celebrated as a sacrament in many Christian traditions, including Lutheranism, is the celebration of God’s choosing us as God’s own. It links us to Christ’s death and resurrection, and through that we gain hope of our own resurrection. Made children of God, and members of the Body of Christ (which is the Church), we are called to a new life. A life that not only begins in the world to come (i.e. heaven), but one that begins now as we endeavor to share and provide a glimmer of that world to the world around us. As such, reflecting on the actions of God in Christ, it is a life marked by kindness, compassion, mercy, forgiveness, and inclusivity. All of the miracles and teachings of Jesus point towards the life that we are called to share as we are enabled by God through the Holy Spirit. A tall order considering the width and breadth of God’s love and mercy, but one that brings with it the joy in being a bearer of God’s hope and peace to a world that very often is in need of healing and restoration.

Every baptism that we celebrate and witness as a Church is the joining of another person into this life and work of God. And it is an invitation for us to remember and reconfirm our own baptismal covenant and commitment to God. As we continue to celebrate and mark this “season of baptisms” at Prince of Peace, may we be mindful of the joy and good news of our own baptisms and our own life with God. Yours in Christ, + Pastor Matt Fuhrman

A Message from Michele Nitzel, Daycare Director

May is filled with the smell of fresh flowers, warm breezes and the sweet sounds of birds chirping.

Throughout the month of May the children of Prince

of Peace will explore things that bloom and grow. They will learn the basics as they help prepare our outdoor garden for this seasons planting. With teacher help, each child will be given the opportunity to add a starter plant to the garden. The children will practice patience as they watch the plants grow and bloom, waiting for the right moment to pick the ripened vegetables. The vegetables will be served during our meals for the children to taste.

The children also begin to prepare for our Spring

Program and Graduation. There are new songs to learn, familiar songs to practice, and caps and gowns for our pre-k children to wear. This is a special time of year for us as the staff prepares to say farewell to some of our children as they travel a new journey to kindergarten.

In honor of Mother’s Day we asked the children what made their mom the best. Here are a few of their responses: My mom is wonderful because she lets me watch TV. My mom is so special because she buys toys for me. I love my mom because she takes care of me. My mom is the best because she takes me places. My mom is special because she took me to the circus. I love my mom because she always sings me a nighttime song. I love my mom because she is so sweet. My mom is wonderful because she gives me kisses. My mom is special because she gives me hugs & lets me get drinks. My mom is special because she writes papers. My mom is the best because she takes me places. We wish all of the ladies of the Prince of Peace community a very special and Blessed Mother’s Day. May your day be filled with special surprises making memories that last a life time. SOCIAL MINISTRY

We have so much great news for May!!! First of all, just to repeat what many of you already know, Prince of Peace’s Social Ministry/Food For Thought Team won Delaware-Maryland Synod Award for Significant Lay Ministry. Our team and Pastor Matt were invited to the Del-Md. Ministry Service Awards Banquet at King Chapel Auditorium, Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster, Md. 4 pm – 7 pm on April 30th to receive the award. Carolyn Wagner, Rob Wagner, and Pastor Matt attended from Prince of Peace, with Robin Darago from Red House Run. We are truly honored! Please look for this award in our church soon. Also, more fantastic news!!! Our Food Pantry has started a partnership with the Baltimore County Dept. of Aging. Barbara Wilt, from Dept. of Aging brought the volunteer, Dave Goodwin, to meet the folks associated with our Food Pantry. Prince of Peace Food Pantry will be making bags for Rosedale seniors, and Dave will pick up monthly and distribute 4 bags to senior residents at Parkview Apartments, all in units on Chesaco Ave. He will come the third Wednesday of each month, so we can have the extra bags made. This is so exciting to us, because our Prince of Peace Food Programs are reaching the very young at Red House Run Elementary with Food for Thought, and extending all the way to the seniors in Rosedale with our Food Pantry. We include every age bracket in between also, from very young children to seniors. We also continue to feed needy and/or homeless people every week with our food pantry.

Social Ministry wants to say “Thank You Prince of Peace Congregation” for allowing us to serve so many local Rosedale residents with your support. We will continue all

Page 16: Prince of Peace - Razor Planet · In baptism our gracious heavenly Father frees us from sin ... My mom is special because she gives me hugs & lets me get drinks. ... award for our

16

programs throughout the summer months (even Food for Thought). We will be delivering backpacks to the students during summer months, because the feedback we get from our surveys tells us emphatically how needed this weekend food is. So, again, Thank You to our congregation! We truly love you! Social Ministry has placed a Card Exchange box in the Narthex. If you happen to need a greeting card, please help yourself. If you have any extra cards, please feel free to add them to our card box. We would like to see this as an on-going courtesy. Streets of Hope is having a special luncheon to show their appreciation for all the support from the churches and others during the past season. This will be held on Sunday, May 21, at Zion United Church of Christ, starting at 1:30. All those who helped in any way are invited. You would need to RSVP as soon as possible. Any questions about this, contact Barbara Nock (410-686-4774). There will also be restaurant fundraisers this spring and summer to support the Streets of Hope organization’s ministry to the homeless in Baltimore County. The next one is Sunday, May 7, 4-10 pm, at Boulevard Diner, 1660 Merritt Blvd., Dundalk. The one after that will be Thursday, June 8, 6-9 pm, at Bob Evans, 4110 Wholesale Club Dr., Nottingham. Check the bulletin board for all of the restaurant fundraisers, and a special incentive for everyone who attends all six.

WELCA

The members of the WELCA Steering Committee wish to send our condolences to the family and friends of Charlotte Price. Charlotte was a long-time member of PoP, a valued member of the choir and an active member of WELCA. We will miss her and remember her fondly for her faithful dedication to our Church and our Christ. Rest in Peace.

WELCA Steering Committee members prepared and served dinner to the men of Streets of Hope on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. We served and dined with 8 members of the shelter along with the director, staff and volunteers. Everyone was pleased with the dinner, snacks, and other basic donations brought to the shelter. We feel we are blessed to be able to contribute to this project.

The Sunday Afternoon WELCA meeting of April 23, 2017 in Ellenberger Hall was a success with 12 ladies attending. Pat Huebshman was our guest lector taking the lesson from the April Gather Magazine.

If you want to reserve a full table, please mark the sheet or call Sharon at 443-691-6845. Entertainment is Maria Rose and Danny Elswig, who have entertained us the past two years at the WELCA Christmas party. They are a talented couple who keeps your toes tapping and your hands clapping. We are looking forward to seeing and hearing them again and are sure you will like them, too. We still need four gentlemen to help serve drinks and desserts as well as have a wonderful meal with the moms and daughters. If you’re interested, please see me in Church, call me at 443-691-6845 or email me at [email protected]. It’ll be fun, so don’t miss it.

because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” 1 John 4:7 Congratulations to all who celebrate! If you find an “active” member’s name missing, it simply means that our church records are incomplete. We will be happy to add that information as you provide it to the church office. For assistance, please call 410-866-8766. Let us know of any omission so that we may update the church record and not miss you the next time.
