CARE AWARDS Congratulations to our Engaged award winners for this week: Darcy Hutton, Ollie Rial, Malka Salas and Fin Mahoney. FROM OUR PRINCIPAL This week we have welcomed parents to the 2018 school year with our ‘Getting to know you interviews’. These interviews aim to develop essential understandings about your child as a learner in our school community. What are the challenges that they feel confident to try versus the areas where support will need to be offered to ensure that they are able to achieve their personal bests here at school. Thank you to all families who were able to attend.

Unfortunately, I was not available to catch up with parents as they came in due to my attendance at a Professional learning session in Melbourne.

As a new Principal I have often found myself in situations where I need to be a learner myself in order for our school to experience success. Many aspects of my role have meant that I need to understand just what conditions need to be in place for great learning to occur. Being a learner myself helps me to understand just how vulnerable it feels to have things that you are not sure about. Creating the right conditions to encourage learners to take risks, accept that mistakes and failure are often important first steps in learning and knowing that without effort achievement is not guaranteed. The ‘Evolve – shaping the Future, Program’ is a professional learning course designed to support newly appointed principals in their growth and understanding of how best to lead school wide development that ensure students learning is at the centre of decision making and funding delivery. Keeping our kids at the centre of our actions is central to how we operate here at Simpson. With strong goals and a growth mindset we are able to work together to deliver education that can truly make a difference for each and every child in our care.

This year our goals are in the area of reading prep to 6 where we will have all students experience growth of one full year, not just coasting and accepting a little growth. Student learning goals will be used to ensure that every student knows what they can do now and what they need to work on to develop the next point of learning in the sequence to become a better reader.

P-2 News

This week has seen the conclusion of the literacy online testing for both grades and In the Prep/1 grade all the required testing has now been completed. In the 1 /2 grade the maths interview has commenced. In the grade 1/2 the focus for spelling has been the letter Y making the “I” sound and in prep/1 the focus has been introducing 4 new sounds. Identifying rhyming words in Nursery rhymes has continued to be a focus in reading. The puppet selfies have been completed and students have begun the new task of making wiggly caterpillars out of egg cartons. Students have continued to practise sports events at lunch time with their house colour in preparation for sports day.

The students have been working hard this week to complete their assignment which is due in on Friday. There have been some very creative presentation ideas and I have been pleased with the discussions that indicate good understanding of the various journeys taken by the explorers studied. The finished assignment is due in on Friday.

This week we also read about Trim the cat who belonged to Matthew Flinders. Unfortunately, Trim disappeared on his last voyage, so we made Lost Cat posters with all Trim’s details that could have been useful in locating him.

The spelling focus was on the ie/ei rule and the writing focus was on modal adverbs in persuasive texts.

In reading we are practising reading with fluency and expression as well as being able to explain what the text is about by recounting main points.

Last week’s Big Write produced some well written texts and it was good to see many families joining in the writing discussion.

It is the last week of the first technology task and student will be putting their designs into book form, so it can be used by others to replicate and adapt their models.

The House Captains have been conducting sport’s practice with enthusiasm and there have been some impressive high jump attempts, with many students achieving a PB!

It is the last week of the Sporting Schools cricket clinics and these have been excellent sessions taken by Matthew Lowe. All skills have improved and he has been able to leave us with some great new activities for our P.E.

sessions.

SCHOOL HOUSE ATHLETIC SPORTS Our Athletic Sports are coming up on Friday 9 March with a new start time of 10am. We encourage all students to participate in this fun day. Each student is in a School House: Coradjil – Red; Waarre – Green; Wiridjil – Yellow; Cooriemungle – Blue. Students are encouraged to come along in t-shirts or polo tops in their house colours. Students rotate around events in their age group. Please see the attached timetable. Thank you to all of those who have already volunteered to help on the day. This helps to ensure we have a successful event. We are still seeking volunteers for the following positions. We also welcome the school community to share volunteer positions. CULTURAL EXCURSION On Tuesday 13 March the grade 3-6 students will visit COPACC to see the live performance of the 78th Storey Treehouse at 12.00 pm. All students will be required to pay for the return bus travel to Colac, $8.00. If students haven’t paid the cultural levy they will also be required to pay the cost for the performance, $14.00 and bus, $8.00. Permission forms will be sent home this week.

CAMP NEWS Camp medical forms will be sent home next week and there will be a camp meeting in the last week of term 1. Thank you to all parents who returned the information form to the school, this greatly assisted with the planning and costing.

HEAD LICE It is important that all children have their hair checked regularly at home for nits and head lice. If your child has a case of head lice, please contact the school so we can alert the parents of other children. This will be done confidentially and without naming individual children.
