1 Principal: Mrs M Crelley Issue No: 15 Term: 3 Monday 24 th September, 2018 Newsletter Term 3 Week 10: Principal’s Report This week we officially bid farewell to Year 12 2018. Leeton High School celebrates this significant rite of passage with a special assembly on Friday 28 th September 2018 from 10.30am in the MPC. We have been exceptionally fortunate to have such a dependable, responsible and productive group of student leaders during 2018. On behalf of the school community I would like to thank Tyler, Georgia, Kody, Jorgy and our prefects Riley, Brodie, Portia, Elijah, Carley and Megan for performing their role as school leaders with enthusiasm and determination and in a manner that upholds the aspirations that we have for our students as young adults and successful future citizens. As one era closes, another begins and I congratulate our new prefects for the 2018-2019 school year. We recognise that these young people possess the skills and qualities ideal as leaders and believe these students will be a motivational force for their fellow students through their exemplary behaviours not only as students of Leeton High School but as human beings impacting on the wider world. We acknowledge and respect their desire to play a pivotal role in continuing our collective journey to excellence. Teachers and students have made an outstanding choice in selecting these young people as our new leaders and I have every confidence that they will be as effective, as well-respected and as appreciated as their predecessors at the end of their leadership journey at Leeton High School. Congratulations to Caleb Watson and Molly Wright our new School Captains, Christopher Ryan and Tamara Bartram, our Vice-Captains and Riley Taskarin, Katie Harrison, Joshua Baulch, Talise Rudd, Ryan Newman and Jessica Murphy our newly inducted Prefects for 2018-2019. Double Gold Jackets Congratulations to Kody Collins and Thomas Bullivant for receiving the pinnacle award of our merit system- a Double Gold jacket. Both boys have been great contributors to our school over the past six years and thoroughly deserve this outstanding acknowledgement. NAPLAN 2018 NAPLAN reports were sent home with students in Years 7 and 9 at the end of last week. If you did not receive your child’s report then please contact the school on 0269532122. State Squash Competition Our girls squash team, consisting of Brianna Gray-Mills, Dakota Boardman, Emily Jennings and Siarne Deeves, were narrowly beaten by Albury High School at the recent state carnival. Both schools had two matches each under their belt but Albury had more points unfortunately. It was a marvelous effort by the girls who came away as 4 th in the state. Our boys team, Dion DeMamiel, Maanu Alexander, Blayne Thompson and Cooper Holmes won a silver medal after a very close match against Albury High School. The boys played magnificently and thoroughly deserved their 2 nd placing in the state. We are very proud of all our teams who demonstrated great skill and sportsmanship over the course of the competition. R U OK? Day On Thursday 13 th September Leeton High School acknowledged R U OK? Day as part of the national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask, “Are you OK?” Our staff and students shared cupcakes to mark this important occasion and to encourage people to ask that important question “R U Okay?” That question could save someone’s life. Leeton High School Squash Teams make NSWCHS Semi-Finals and Finals On Friday 14th September the LHS Boy’s and Girl’s squash teams travelled to Werrington to participate in the semi- finals and final of the NSWCHS Squash Knockout Championships. The girl’s team consisting of Siarne Deeves, Emily Jennings, Brianna Gray-Mills and Dakota Boardman had to play Parkes High School, who was too strong taking the match 3-1. This put them into the playoff against Albury High School for 3rd and 4th position. It was a fierce contest with 2 matches each so then it went to points scored with Albury High taking the prize 127 to 121 points. The girl’s played their hearts out and should be very proud of their achievements. The boy’s team consisting of Cooper Holmes, Maanu Alexander, Dion DeMamiel and Blayne Thompson met Gloucester High School in the semi-finals and had a great win 4-0. This set up a contest with our nemesis, Albury High School. Unfortunately we were convincingly beaten but the boy’s put up an amazing fight, never giving up. This result gave Leeton High School a silver medal, which is an awesome achievement. The boy’s should be very proud of their effort. This wraps up another outstanding year of representative squash for Leeton High School culminating in a silver medal, a 4th, 4 Riverina representatives and 2 state representatives. Thank you to all those parents who travelled with their children to attend the numerous squash games throughout the state.

LHS Girls U-15 Basketball This week the LHS U-15 basketball team played in the CHS State Semi-Final against Karaba High School from Queanbeyan. It was a really tough games and the score was even for three quarters of the game. The girls all played to a very high standard and it could have been anyone’s game. Unfortunately, Karabah were on point with a few 3 pointers and came away with a win. The girls can be very proud for making it this far in the State knockout where they finished in the top 16 schools in the state.
