Year 1’s have taken a ‘trip down memory lane’ this week, with a celebration of the ‘olden days’. It was a pleasure to welcome some of our ‘more experienced’ community members to PPPS to share their memories and some artefacts with the kids. Thanks so much for taking the time to join us and for adding an extra dimensions to the kids’ learning. I trust you will learn something new this week.

You think you can dance? With Plenty Parklands you can!

One of the many exciting events happening next term is the Prep to year 4 dance

program. The whole program is conducted by professional dance teacher, David

Skinner to enrich the Performing Arts curriculum.

It is hoped that all Prep to Year 4 students will participate in the program

regardless of their past experience or involvement in Dance. David will include some

of the ‘old favorites’ as well as introducing some new routines to today’s music.

The program will culminate with our School Family Dance on Thursday 25 August where students

will get the chance to show off their style in a demonstration dance. There will also be many opportunities

for families to dance and join in the fun on the night of the dance concert. Start planning your table

groups now. A ticket flyer will be sent home next term. Student dance notice and money to be returned by

Tuesday 12 July.

Three tips to help with parenting “Sometimes to get something you want you have to stop doing some of the things you habitually do. .. This principle applies as much to parenting as it does to other areas of your life. Often I see parents doing things out of habit for their kids that just don’t cut the mustard if they want their children to be well-behaved and independent. Here are three common parenting behaviours that parents should never do: 1. Never give attention to a behaviour you are trying to extinguish If you want your child to stop whining, for example, then resist the temptation to ask him to stop. This inad-vertently draws attention to the whining, which will guarantee that it will continue. Instead – move away from the behaviour you don't want. Do anything but respond to the whining. 2. Never do for a child something that they can routinely do Once your child can get themselves up in the morning then give this responsibility to them. From time to time they may need a hand to get themselves up and going – often adults stay in bed longer than they should. But once a child has accepted responsibility for something, don’t take it away from them. Instead, make it easy for them to take the responsibility (‘How would you like me to help you?’) with gentle reminders and subtle cues. 3. Never praise your child for a positive habit Are you pleased how your child always packs up their toys at the end of the day? If so (lucky you!), don’t spoil it be praising them for doing what comes naturally. If it’s a habit, then it’s a behaviour that is now em-bedded into their subconscious mind. Praising it will bring it to their conscious mind – where behaviours come and go. Instead, let them know how a clean room at the end of the day makes you feel – presumably happy, relieved or proud. There are lots of other behaviours that should go in your never-do list. This is just a start. What else can you think of? Never talk to a child when you’re angry because you won’t do much of a job. Never talk to a child while they’re angry because they won’t hear you. Never… I’ll leave you to finish the list.” Michael Grose

We are 5-3 and we have been learning about persuasive texts. We are all very worried about how the Australian bush is getting cut down and about the lives of the animals.

I am the bush and I am koala

We are one - go hand in hand

I am the bush like Banjo and Henry

It's in my blood - gonna make a stand What am I gonna do - what about the future? Gotta draw the line without delay Why shouldn't I get emotional - the bush is sacred Ancient life will fade away

Remember the axemen knew their timber Cared about the way they brought it down Crosscut, blackbutt, tallowood and cedar Build another bungalow - pioneer town

Over the hill they go, killing another mountain

Gotta fill the quota - can't go slow

Huge machinery wiping out the scenery

One big swipe like a shearer's blow

2016 INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS AND ASSESSMENTS FOR SCHOOLS (ICAS)

Welcome to the 2016 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS). For over 30 years, ICAS has taken place annually in schools throughout Australia and other countries. Your child is invited to participate in ICAS in 2016. ICAS provides an opportunity for students in Years 2 to 12 to gain a measure of their own achievement in a testing situation. It provides teachers, parents and students with comprehensive reporting of results in the areas of English and Mathematics. The student report is useful for highlighting your child’s strengths and weaknesses. All students receive a certificate and an individual student report indicating which questions they answered correctly and their score compared with the rest of the students tested. The certificate and individual student report are also suitable for your child to include in a portfolio. Over one million student entries are accepted from over 6,300 schools in Australia and New Zealand annually. In addition, students from over 20 countries including Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa and the USA participate in ICAS each year.

Certificates are awarded for each year level as follows:

High Distinction to the top 1% of entrants Distinction to the next 10% of entrants

Credit to the next 25% of entrants Merit to the next 10% of entries

Participation to all other participating students.

A UNSW medal is awarded when the highest score in each year level in each state in each subject is judged to be sufficiently meritorious. Students must sit on the official sitting dates to be eligible for a UNSW medal.

The entry fee is as follows, English – TUESDAY 2ND AUGUST ($10.00)

SUSTAINABILITY TIP: Reduce Waste To reduce paper waste, use printers with double-sided printing capabilities. Whenever possible, print on each side of the paper. You can also use scrap paper when printing drafts.

Last Wednesday 25th May 61 students represented our school in the

district cross country event. It was a windy, cold day, but it didn’t dampen our students’ determination and will power to try their best while running 2 or 3 kilometres at Bundoora Park. Students ran in groups of 10 amongst each of the 6 other schools from our district. Therefore approximately 70 students were running at one time. All students displayed great sportspersonship by supporting each other enthusiastically throughout the day. I would particularly like to congratulate the following students who will

represent the Bundoora District at the Divisional Cross Country event on Wednesday 1st June at Bundoora Park; Adam 8

of the 7 schools, which was a great achievement! All attending students have made PPPS very proud as their behaviour throughout the day, demonstrated our values. I would like to thank the parents who helped to look after the students waiting and who acted as marshals on the day; Eli Anastasiou and Ivana Vangeli. I would also like to thank Emma Patterson and Ineke VanVliet for attending and ensuring that each child was ready for their race. A special thank you also goes to Kelly Goldspink, who took my Phys. Ed classes for the morning; and to Mr Scanu for his unwavering support. It was also great to see parents supporting their child and other children from our school, encouraging everyone to run at their best! Well done and thank you again. Julie Gatt

Intraschool Sport Program: students to board the bus by 9.10am, to travel to Epping Leisure Centre. Games to commence by 9.30am and conclude by 11am. WHY ARE STUDENTS ALLOWED TO HAVE WATER ONLY DRINK BOTTLES IN CLASS?

Why is it so important that students drink water? Water is good for you. Our bodies are made up of 50-60% water. Water lost each day through breathing, sweating and going to the toilet needs to be replaced, especially in hot weather. Adequate fluid intake is essential to good health. Not drinking enough fluid causes dehydration. Any level of dehydration can cause physical symptoms such as headaches and irritability. Given the impact of dehydration on physical ability, it is believed that your ability to concentrate will be worse if you are dehydrated. Why should students drink in class? Thirst is not a good indicator of dehydration. By the time a person is thirsty they are usually already dehydrated to some extent. Children rarely drink enough during break times at school and often forget to drink unless reminded. Allowing and reminding students to drink water in class increases the likelihood that they will drink more. Drinking often, especially before, during and after physical activity is the best way to stay hydrated.

How much water should children drink?

The recommended daily amounts of fluid for children and adolescents are:

5 glasses (1 litre) for 5 - 8 year olds

7 glasses (1.5 litres) for 9 - 12 year olds

8-10 glasses (2 litres) for 13+ years * a glass is 200 ml

More water is needed if children are exercising or sweating due to heat. Physical Education & Sports Coordinator - Sebastian Scanu
