Principal’s Message

What a lovely day we had last Tuesday at the athletics carnival. We are very fortunate to live in a time when the weather forecast is so accurate, allowing us to proceed with the carnival despite the way the weather presented in the morning. The rain stopped as we got off the busses and all events went off without a hitch. Thanks to Mr Baker, Mrs Swinburn, Mrs Clements and Mrs Bruce for their outstanding organisation on the day which ran like clockwork. Thanks also to the parents who came along to cheer on their kids and also those who helped out on the day. I had a lovely conversation with the lady who runs the canteen at the venue who told me they always love it when Belair attends the centre as the students are always polite and beautifully behaved. Congratulations to all students for their great participation and efforts on the day. Congratulations to the individual winners and to the winning house which is soon to be announced. Anzac Service This Friday Belair School will be holding its ANZAC commemorative service at 10.20 in the hall. All students attend this service led by our school leaders. Autism Awareness Month- Friday out of uniform. April is World Autism Month. Autism Awareness Australia is encouraging us to come together to pledge to go blue to increase global understanding and acceptance of people with autism. This Friday is our regular Out of Uniform gold coin charity collection day and we are encouraging students to add a touch of blue to their outfits to be a part of this campaign. Monies collected will still be distributed by our school charities leaders at the end of the year. World Autism Month | Autism Speaks https://www.autismspeaks.org/world-autism-month Mother’s Day Stall Our P&C Mother’s Day Stall will be held on Thursday 9 May. Priscilla, our organiser, is seeking some support on the day from parents. If you can spare a few hours, or just an hour or two, please let the office know and we will pass your name on to Priscilla. This event is both a fundraiser for our school and a service to our community. All gifts are new and there is always a great range for students to choose from. Keep your eye out for pricing details in the next newsletter. Regards, Warwick Beard, Principal

Deputy Principal’s Message Congratulations to 4B and 5K for your excellent behaviour leading to being selected as the classes of the week at assembly last week. Also congratulations KA the being class of the week at the K-2 assembly on Monday.

ALARM PROJECT Stage 3 The ALARM matrix is made up of a series of categories that help students investigate a text at a deep enough level for an adequate response. The ALARM matrix guides students through seven levels of critical thinking as they structure a response to a text; Define, Describe, Explain, Analyse, Critically Analyse and Evaluate.

This week I will elaborate on the Analyse matric component so that you are able to support your child’s learning from home.

Kind regards

Kathie Colley

Kind regards, Kathie Colley

Here's where you indicate how the evidence you gathered in the 'define, describe and explain' sections actually did something and to what extent it did it. There are many ways to do this but this one works quite well. Consider how your evidence tells us something about the key character(s), what impact it has upon the responder (that's you, or others like you) and whether it has had a longer term impact upon our society. 1) What does it tell us about the key character(s)? Look

for a few things here. Firstly, how does your example define a characteristic of the character? Does it tell us they are brave or fearful, thoughtful or insensitive? Secondly, does it show some kind of change in the characters? Has one of their characteristics been altered? Have they learned something through the example you have used? Thirdly, does your evidence indicate that the character represents a type of person or idea that represents something bigger than themselves.

2) What's my opinion as an individual responder here? Here's where you get to talk about how the evidence you've introduced made you reconsider the characters you're writing about and/or the ideas being discussed, or how it clarified your understanding. 3) Was there an impact upon society? In many situations, the text you are studying has had an impact on broader society. So what pieces of our society has this text impacted upon and how has society altered in response?
