Congratulations to our 2017 Athletics Carnival

age champions!

NAPLAN News The 2017 NAPLAN results will be sent home with students on Monday 21 August (Week 6). Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will have the fun challenge of testing the school’s and the department’s NAPLAN online website. In what is purely a technical capacity trial, our school will be utilising all 240 Year 3 and 5 students as alpha testers. Their mission is to man our school's computers to test our capacity to host any future online NAPLAN tests. We hope that the students can push our system to near breaking point! It will be a stress free time for the students to revisit NAPLAN. No marks are possible. No students’ names will be recorded. No scores are possible. In fact, no one gets anything but the chance to break our system. If they can! It is a technical test for our students to push the online system’s capability.

There’s a lot more information on the department’s NAPLAN online website: https://education.nsw.gov.au/teaching-andlearning/student-assessment/naplan-online Jason Wilkins Deputy Principal

Twelve students from Year 5 and 6 competed in the 2017 East Hills Boys High School Mind Marathon Competition. The Mind Marathon is a day of academic rigour involving challenges in English, history, mathematics, science, engineering and general knowledge. All students worked collaboratively in their teams and were outstanding representatives of our school.

Students from Stage 2 and 3 competed in the Stage Spelling Bee finals today. Students persevered when spelling difficult words and participated with enthusiasm. Students who will represent our school at the Regional Finals are Xanthya L and Jamie-Lynn Mc from Stage 2 and Keira D and Selena X from Stage 3. Regional Finals will be held on Monday 4 September at Illawong Public School. The Stage 2 (junior) competition will run from 9.30am-11.30am and the Stage 3 (senior) competition will run from 12.30pm-2.30pm. We wish the finalists the best of luck at their upcoming competition!

On Wednesday 16 August 2017, Kirk N (5/6F), Sophie E (6W), Lucy V (5L) and Ryan B (5/6F) represented Engadine West PS at the annual ANSTO Coding Gala Day. The goal for the day was to create a program using the coding platform ‘Scratch’, related to the theme ‘Healthy Living’.

Gaynor Long Coding Day Coordinator

ANSTO Coding Gala Day

Our students were in a tough competition! Both the Year 5 and Year 6 teams were outstanding in their ability to collaborate on their projects. The coding skills they possess, which enabled them to turn their ideas into a computer game, means they are well on their way to earning a place in a society where, by 2030, more than 50% of jobs will require a high level of coding.

The 4Cs: Creativity, Communication, Collaboration and Critical Thinking, are the skills at the forefront of 21st century learning. The ANSTO coding gala day provided our students with the opportunity to use all of these skills on a project that was both engaging and relevant to the students’ lives.

The Fresh for Kids healthy eating competition runs from 28 August until the end of September 2017. Students will receive a sticker when they purchase fruit or vegetables from the canteen. Trivia Night Update

Saturday 16 September 2017 7.00pm at Engadine RSL

Thankyou for the great response to our upcoming Trivia Night. We are pleased to announce that all tables are booked, it’s a SELL OUT! There are a few seats left on the canteen table, so if you would like to come along, be sure to let us know. To those who have booked a table, we need to receive payment as soon as possible please, in order to confirm your place. Thanks to those who have already paid and HUGE thanks to the wonderful table sponsors (there are still some tables that would love a sponsor!) We are still collecting prizes for the night, so if you could please think about asking your family, friends and work colleagues if they could help in anyway. Hampers, vouch-ers for goods or services, anything big or small will be appreciated. You can drop your items to the EWPS office, or contact Toni and Justine to arrange collection. This is our major fundraiser for 2017, so even if you can’t attend on the night, we would be grateful for any support. The questions are written, the games are being planned and the prizes are growing each day. We can’t wait for the night to arrive!
