2017 PREP ENROLMENTS ARE NOW

BEING TAKEN

If you are a member of our school community and

have a child commencing Prep in 2017, please come

to the school office to collect an enrolment pack.

At last night’s Education Week Open Night, it was ‘all hands on deck’ to create a kite that will fly. Parents and kids were engrossed in the task, resulting in many varieties of shapes, sizes and ‘flight readiness’. Some even

had elegant decorations. The higher up the school, the more complex were the kites in some cases. One family was working on their third kite for the evening! After last night, I doubt there’s any sticky tape left in classrooms. Thanks to our parents for showing such a keen interest in your child’s education and bringing them to school after hours. Thanks also to Ms McKay and the CBD for their lovely and heartfelt performance.

Thanks also to the committee who planned our celebrations and to all staff for being here late and for being so welcoming to our community, particularly at this busy ‘report writing‘ time of the year. Reminder that Friday is the kite flying day, so keep your fingers crossed for some wind. It is also a casual clothes day . See Education Week flyer on page 7.

Date: May 19 2016 Issue 14 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE CONTINUED Chesterfield Farm was a great hit with our preps last week; off they went in their gumboots and jackets to ‘see the animals’. See, touch, hear, feed and smell the animals, is more like it. I thought it might be nice to ‘hear’ from one of our preps, Jennifer, in her own writing who wrote her piece about the farm and then presented it at this week’s assembly. “Hi, my name is Jennifer and I am going to tell you about the farm, it was fun. I lent to milk a cow. I fed the animls. The trackor was fun. The veggie pach was nice. The bus was cool. The baby anumls were so cute. The farm was fun. I made a new friend on the Bus.” Great job Jennifer and I know the learning has continued as I just visited some prep rooms and guess what they were reading and talking about? Yes, the farm. IMPORTANT change of dates. Last week I asked you to put some important dates in your diary, now I need you to change them to a week earlier. Now the date to put in your diary is Wednesday July 13. Please join us in the morning at 9:00 until 9:50 or if you prefer or if you are working, at 7:00 unit 8:00 pm. This is an invitation to join the School Council and some of our student leaders to review our systems view of PPPS. We will be led by Michael King from Quality Learning Australia to look at our Purpose Statement, our Vision Statements and our Values. You will have the chance to review these and give your opinion about whether they are still relevant or need updating. This is a real opportunity for everyone to have a say in the future of our school. Parenting, the hardest job. Michael Grose has a few ideas that could help. Do you find it frustrating when your children won’t cooperate with you? A simple request to pack up toys and wash hands before dinner is ignored. Or your reminder to set the table or do homework is answered with procrastination, argument or complaint. It can be difficult to know how to respond when kids will only do things on their terms. Here are three tips to help you avoid frustration and get cooperation from your kids Don’t threaten, bribe or do deals! Getting kids to cooperate is tricky. One method doesn’t necessarily fit all kids so as a parent or teacher it helps to have a broad repertoire of responses to draw on when kids are less than perfect or you want more cooperative behaviour. Here are three good discipline habits to develop: 1. Avoid the first impulse so you don’t overreact A good rule of thumb is to stop yourself from reacting when children misbehave. As much of children’s poor behaviour is purposeful, in that it keeps parents busy with them or is designed to let parents know that in fact you can make a child do anything they want to do, your impulsive reactions reinforce the behaviour. At times stopping and doing nothing is better than saying something you regret later on or can’t follow through with. 2. Move toward them to be noticed Moving into children’s space to deliver a message is usually more effective than issuing an order across a lounge room when you are competing with a screen for attention. It does require effort but the results in terms of getting cooperation is generally worth it. 3. Use a consequence to teach Not all children respond positively to consequences. Very sensitive children can take consequences personally so use them sparingly with more sensitive. Sometimes a change in the tone of your voice is enough for these children. But generally reasonable consequences that have a relationship to children’s misdemeanours and that are respectfully delivered are effective in teaching children to behave responsively. The trick is to deliver them like a neutral cop – cool, calm and with not too many words. Thanks again for your contribution to learning this week by your participation in our Open Night, Claire McInerney, Principal

Thanks to Steve, father of Cooper in 5-6, and a musician himself, who

invited his friend, Paul Laine to visit and sing and play guitar for our year

5’s. As a professional musician from Canada, Paul said he feels incredibly

lucky to have been able to do something he loves; singing, composing

and performing, and make a lifelong career at the same time. It was a

terrific opportunity to ask questions of someone who began his

professional career as a solo artist, then was the singer of Danger Danger

out of New York for eleven years, then fronted his own band, Shugaazer.

Paul now has a band, "Darkhorse", whose album Let It Ride was released

April 29, 2014. Paul has a fabulous voice, but was unassuming and

relaxed with the kids. Having now met Paul I can see why he is known as,

“the nice guy of rock ‘n’ roll”.

You think you can dance? With Plenty Parklands you can! One of the many exciting events happening next term is the Prep to year 4 dance program. The

whole program is conducted by professional dance teacher, David Skinner to enrich the

Performing Arts curriculum.

It is hoped that all Prep to Year 4 students will participate in the program regardless of their

past experience or involvement in Dance. David will include some of the ‘old favorites’ as well as

introducing some new routines to today’s music.

The program will culminate with our School Family Dance on Thursday 25 August where students will

get the chance to show off their style in a demonstration dance. There will also be many

opportunities for families to dance and join in the fun on the night of the dance concert. Start planning your table groups now. A

ticket flyer will be sent home next term.

PPPS has forged close links with a number of Universities to help train the next generation of teachers, known as Pre Service Teachers (PST). We also benefit from the RMIT physical education program with first year PE teachers each year and the year 2 students are involved with Science PSTs from RMIT. To become a primary school teacher you are required to complete a four year university degree. The practical component of the course requires a PST to spend a certain number of days in schools gaining ‘hands on’ experience and being directly mentored by an experienced teacher. You may have noticed new faces around the school or perhaps your child has talked about having ‘another teacher’ in their room. Already this year we have had PST’s from RMIT, Swinburne and LaTrobe in various home groups across the school. We also take a number of work experience students from local state secondary schools at various times through the year. We are very fortunate at PPPS that so many of our wonderful teaching staff are willing to take an active role in mentoring the next generation of teachers. Julie Nixon Coordinator of Program

Introducing the ICT Team Hi everyone, my name is Kerrie Shelden and this is my fifth year teaching eLearning across all year levels. Before this I was a classroom teacher and have taught from years 2 to 6. I have been at PPPS since 2000. How quickly time flies! I am the coordinator of ICT and work with our two technicians to purchase new equipment and maintain our existing devices. Outside of school, my interests include barrack-ing for Essendon in the AFL and Melbourne Storm in the NRL. I also enjoy reading, listening to music, travelling and watching movies. I have a new addition to my fami-ly, a rescue dog named Blossom, who provides me with countless hours of enter-tainment and laughs. Hi my name is Stephen Dovile. I am the Specialist Technician at PPPS and I do my best to keep all the computers running at the school on Mondays and Wednesdays. I also work at Dallas Brooks Community Primary, Hume Valley School and Sher-bourne Primary. I have been in the Technical Support to Schools Program for 9 years. If I was able increase the day’s length to 48 hours I think I would be able to finish all the jobs at PPPS. Hi, my name is Luc Labigang. I’m the local technician at PPPS on Tuesdays and

Thursday. I’m also working at four other schools for the rest of the week. In my free

time, I like to educate myself further in various fields, most notably physics. I contribute to community supported video game

development, work on personal software projects and when I find the time, I dabble in music composition as well. I also coach

soccer 3 nights/days a week, as a change from all that sitting in front of a computer, and a means to get some exercise.

EDUCATION WEEK at PPPS —Let’s Go Fly a Kite! IT’S EDUCATION WEEK!

Education week is a state wide celebration of learning. So far it has been a wonderful week here at PPPS. Education Week was launched with a fantastic Assembly Performance on Monday and each morning we are entering our

classrooms to the song “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” Kites are everywhere and the students are so excited! Thank you so much to anyone who donated materials.

We hope you all took the opportunity to watch the fabulous CBD perform on Tuesday and then ventured to the classrooms to create kites and explore technology.

Students are now busy finishing off their kites so they can fly them on Friday (hopefully it will be windy).

Please remember

DRESS UP AND KITE FLYING DAY TOMORROW—FRIDAY 20TH MAY Students can dress up as something to do with Technology (computer, solar panel, robot, scientist, kite OR they can dress up in

the colours of their kite). On this day students will join together to share their kites and show off their dress ups (wind permitting).

If you would like any more information please check out the Education Week website for more information. The website address is below.

National Walk Safely to School Day— use the Active Paths to walk safely to school on Friday

Now in its 17th year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children will be encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a Community Event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.

All information can found at: walk.com.au

The event will be held throughout Australia on Friday 20 May 2016

The objectives of WSTSD are:

To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe

pedestrian behaviour.

To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.

To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.

To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature

pedestrians.

To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children

become adults.

To promote the use of Public Transport.

To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.

To reduce the level of traffic congestion.

To assist governments of all levels a short 2 minute survey link is provided below to a national survey to help build insights into how children are currently getting to school and how they would actually like to get to school. Link to survey is as follows: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WSTSD2016 Physical Education & Sports Coordinator - Sebastian Scanu

BUDDY BEAR KINDNESS WEEK

This week in OSHC we have been discussing children’s safety. From time to time we need to have discussions with the children about their safety at OSHC. So far this has included having emergency evacuation, fire drills, lockdown practices and discussions about dealing with challenging behaviour from their peers and ‘stranger danger’ with our Buddy Bear Leadership program this also helps children to feel safe while at OSHC. Next week we will be asking children to perform a random act of kindness and we will record them in our reflection journal. Some of the fun activities we are offering will be: soccer, football, skipping, houla hoops. Indoor board games, stained glass art, beading and stencil art. For bookings go to campaustralia.com.au If your child is not attending the program on the day or if they are away from school, it is important to give us a call on the OSHC direct number: 9404 4516 and leave a message so staff are aware of the child’s absence. Thanks Camp Australia Team
