Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30.00 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Read about Year 6’s excursion to Canberra on page 6 and 7 of the newsletter.

Across the stages

The Kindergarten teachers recently ordered some new resources to help the student’s engage with their learning in and out of the classroom. They have had fun learning how to skip with the new skipping ropes, and hands-on materials have been a great addition to our maths group activities.

Kindergarten

Stage 1

Stage 1 have been learning about one of the world’s most famous painters, Vincent Van Gogh. Student’s painted one of his most famous paintings,

Sunflowers. Van Gogh painted the Sunflowers for the yellow room he rented in Arles, France. He decorated the room before his friend Paul Gauguin

went to live with him. While alive he wasn’t famous at all. Since his death, Vincent Van Gogh became one of the most successful painters in history.

Stage 2

As part of the Stage 2 STEM program, 4 King explored the science concepts of 'forces', 'push/pull' and 'friction'. Students were asked to design and build a model of a wind-powered car using Lego wheels, straws, paddlepop sticks, masking tape, papercups and plates. A large fan was used to test the

vehicles.

Our budding scientists and engineers at work and the cars they built.

Year 6 Shirt Design It’s shocking how you enter a design competition out of sheer boredom but still end up winning. Coincidence? I think not. The process of designing it took a few days with drafts and all, but the end product was decent, well, decent enough to win the entire competition. It’s amazing that even though I went up against some great artists I would still end up winning. Although some people aren't very happy with me because I made a slight math error on the Shirt (if you see the shirt, you’ll get it) it's something to do with the Pythagoras theorem. Hopefully no one comes to complain. Victoria - 6 Santos

Eastern Sydney Zone Netball Carnival On Monday the 17th of May I represented Summer Hill Public School at the Eastern Sydney Zone Netball Carnival. My team and I played a total of 6 games, resulting in us winning 5 out of the 6 games. We ended up 2nd in our pool of teams and overall 4th out of the 12 teams that competed. After my team played our games, I was 1 of 30 girls selected to stay after the carnival and try out for the Regional Team. The selectors tried out different team combinations until there were only 2 teams left. Out of the 14 girls in those teams they would pick 3 defenders, 4 midcourters and 3 shooters to make up the Regional Team. Unfortunately, I was one spot off making regionals, but I still loved being a part of it, and it will be an amazing experience I will always look back on. Madi - 6 Santos

Sydney East In term 2 week 2 I went to Terrigal for PSSA Basketball but first I had to go through a long period of trials. First, I had to trial in my Local Government Area against other local basketball players in my age group where I got in with Jacob. Then we went to Sutherland where we versed all the other teams to trial for the Sydney East team and I was successful. Then in term 2 week 2, I went to Terrigal with my team, we competed with other teams like Sydney North and Sydney West.

Going into the competition I didn't know how we would go as we hadn't seen all the other teams but in the first game we won by twenty points, so I was a bit more confident. We went on to win every game except for 1 game against Sydney North which was stacked with a lot of rep players. We then got in the semi-finals where we won by 2 and continued to go into the finals. We knew we would have a challenge as we were going up against Sydney North. We ended up losing that game so we came second out of all the teams. But it was a very good experience and I really enjoyed it. Ezekiel K - 6 Dunant

Western Suburbs and Wiley Park Zones Combined Girls Football Trials

At the end of Term 1, I attended the Western Suburbs and Wiley Park Zones Combined Girls Football Trials. I was selected to play in the combined zone team and went on to compete at the regional trials. At the regional trials, I was then chosen to play for the Sydney East PSSA regional girls soccer team. The process was hard and challenging and I had to work with people I didn't know. We were there for 4 hours and I played 4 games in total. In the end, I managed to get into the state championship. I am now training with the Sydney East team each Friday after school. Our team will be playing at the NSWPSSA Football Girls Championship in June out in Blacktown. We will be competing against other teams from all over NSW. I feel

happy yet nervous, all at the same time. Wish me luck!

That’s all from me!

Buddy Time – Year 2 and Year 5 On Tuesday, in the afternoon, Miss Wright (Miss Weston was busy) said we were going to do origami with 2 Cassin for the first Buddy Time this year. We were learning to use the 4Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity) with our Year 2 buddies. Miss Wright put on a step by step video while 5W watched in the classroom. We were making a monster bookmark! This meant we were going to be experts for when it came time to help our buddies. It was simple, clear, and best of all, lots of fun! We went to the Year 2 classroom and the teacher told us to sit down. The 2 Cassin teacher is Ms Rawson and she assigned us to pairs or groups of three. The Year 5 students had to teach the Year 2 buddies how to make the origami monster bookmark. Year 2 had a choice of being creative – most of them chose a monster or an owl bookmark. 5W had a great experience, teaching their friends in 2C how to be creative and collaborate with their buddy.

Ena and Jason – 5 Walesa During our buddy time, we made origami bookmarks. My buddy was James. We basically took turns in creating the bookmark. James sometimes needed help, but it seemed like he could mostly handle it by himself. This experience, I thought, was unique as it made us ‘bond’ with the Year 2 students and I would be glad to do it again. It also made me notice James’ creativity with using lots of colours in his production and it was just wonderful transferring our knowledge of building these bookmarks to the other class. Marcus - 5 Walesa

2020 saw mass outbreaks, travel restrictions, and lockdowns all over the world, so it was natural that school camp was cancelled, but this year was different. Even though everyone knew that with a few cases, camp could be cancelled as soon as the day before, it happened. After a nearly four hour bus ride and countless times singing about those 99 bottles falling off walls, we finally made it to Canberra. It was a long journey, and before anything else, we went to the Australian War Memorial. From old war planes to huge statues, from large exhibition rooms with interesting facts to the eternal flame, the War Memorial had it all. We solemnly crept into the room of the Tomb of the Unknown Australian Soldier, silent and still. We ran across fields dotted with statues and models, joyful and free. Following on, our coach trekked up the steep road to the Mount Ainslie Lookout. There we saw the whole plot and skyline of Canberra, later shown to us the next day at the National Capital Exhibition..

After that was The Royal Australian Mint, where we took the coins in our wallets back to their birthplace and listened to the history of Australia’s coins. Sadly, this marked the end of our Canberra Expedition, and carrying many new memories (as well as a lot of souvenirs), we hopped on the bus and travelled back to Sydney, once again enduring a nearly four hour bus ride, singing about 99 bottles. Stage 3 - Year 6 camp

During the day, we headed to the Australian Arboretum with its dashing views and beautiful scenery. There was also a playground, full of fun climbing equipment, swing-hammocks and more. It was a wonderful sight. The rest of our day was full of great activities such as a Lego program with lego mosaic building and block constructions powered with an electric motor. Other places we went to were quite educational with stops to the Australian Electoral Commision at Old Parliament House where we learned about the process of voting, and the Australian Institute of Sport where we tried various interactive sport games. The cabins were small, but cosy with an average of 5 people in each room and everyone was too ecstatic to sleep, but we knew we had to, because the next day we were headed to… Parliament House! The thing everyone was waiting for. We packed our belongings early the next day and headed to the main government building of Australia. We walked past tall marble pillars, looked on at the House of Representatives, and acted in our own makeshift parliament session.

Drama

Tales from the Wild Bush NIDA Excursion

On Wednesday 12 May, students from 1 Leymah and 2 Wangari had the very special privilege of attending a live show at the Nida Theatre, by invitation from The Arts Unit. Tales from the Wild Bush was written and performed by the NSW Public Schools 2021 Drama Company under the direction of industry professionals Robert Jago and Emma Palmer, stars of Play School! Our students formed part of a preview audience and filming of the production. Afterwards Mrs Anton and some excited students answered questions about the show, on film. We really enjoyed the story, learning lessons from furry native animals in a tale of fantasy and friendship. We got to meet the cast and crew and everyone agreed it was a fantastic experience. Renee Anton and Jacqui Biffin Drama Teachers

Congratulations Lloyd S and Georgia H from Year 5 who have both been successful in their video auditions for the NSW Public Schools Primary State Drama Ensembles for 2021. The ensembles aim to foster the pursuit of excellence in drama. Students will work with experienced teachers and industry tutors to devise works for local and state festivals or a virtual festival. Video auditions have now closed but we wish all of our students good luck at the upcoming live auditions on SUNDAY JUNE 6. If you are in Year 5 or 6 and would still like to attend the live audition, it is not too late! Ride2School and Walk Safely to School Day Wrap-up

Congratulations to all the students for walking and wheeling to school on our active travel day Friday 14 May! We had a great turn out and some fantastic, decorated bikes and scooters. Our volunteers were busy handing out stickers and raffle tickets, fitting helmets and parking bikes and scooters. Thank you to all our parent volunteers and special thanks to the student Ministers and other student helpers. We will draw the winners of the raffle at the assemblies coming up. The P&C have organised some fantastic prizes donated by Microscooters, Ashfield Cycles and Monkey Puzzle including a scooter, bike bag, bike chain, bottle holder…. Don’t worry if you lost your ticket stub as we have all the names. Summer Hill Public School would love to see our students keep up the walking and riding safely throughout the year.

Garden Bee Success

The P&C school gardening bee on Saturday 15 May was very successful! A great turn out of families and kids joined in for the afternoon, getting plenty of active time outdoors. Our teams of volunteers cleaned and stained all the benches and timber play equipment. We also completed lots of weeding, pruning and planting in the native gardens and enjoyed a bush tucker themed afternoon tea.

Sport

PSSA Junior boys football

Summer Hills PS vs Burwood PS Last Friday (14th May) our two teams went off to play Burwood FC at St Luke’s Oval in Concord. It was wonderful to be able to play two spirited games of football under such beautiful bright blue skies. The Juniors won a hard fought game against a Burwood team that were impressed with our team work and skills. Our Seniors continue to dominate the competition with a confident win with Ryan, the captain for this week, leading by example with responsibility, respect and resilience. Even after getting a nasty graze on his knee, Ryan wanted to continue to play! Both teams continue to demonstrate learning, sportsmanship and collaboration. Well done everyone! Regards Adam Williams and Eddie Otto Coaches

PSSA Sport

Cross Country at Pratten Park

In Week 3 we had our second attempt at holding a Cross Country Carnival. It started to rain when we got to the park and many of our students returned to school. Congratulations to all students who ran and showed perseverance in the wet conditions - we are extremely proud of you! Our carnival allowed us form a Zone team to compete at the WSPSSA Zone Cross Country Carnival on the 26 May. Well done to everyone representing our school!

PSSA Touch football

At Touch Football training we have been learning new techniques to improve our understanding of the game. We have learnt about techniques such as: a three man drive, quick passing, running and stepping techniques, how to dump the ball quickly and how to show good sportsmanship. We have definitely improved since the start of term. Jess B, Mira, P and Cassie S In Week 3 we had a bye because Year 6 were away enjoying their Canberra Camp. In Week 4 we played Newington PS and were able to use the new skills we have learnt. The Junior Boys won 4-1, the Senior boys won 10-2 and the Girls won 9-1. We showed fantastic sportsmanship and cheered for Newington, ourselves and our coaches. Our Week 5 game was unfortunately cancelled due to wet weather, but we were still lucky enough to get our Thursday training session!
