Principals Report – Week 10, Term 2

NAIDOC Day

Mullaway Primary School celebrated NAIDOC Day on Tuesday,July 2nd.

This year the NAIDOC theme is: Voice. Treaty. Truth. Let's worktogether for a shared future.

The day began with a Welcome to Country by GumbaynggirrElder Uncle Michael Jarret. Uncle Michael also shared aGumbaynggirr song and story.

Students participated in three group rotations which included:Aboriginal games, weaving and building shelters, and; cookingand Australian art.

We had wonderful support from a number of parent andcommunity volunteers, and; I would like to acknowledge MissCanale and our teachers for their commitment and dedicationin ensuring our NAIDOC Day was a great experience for all ourstudents.

There is much to listen to, hear and learn about; just as weall like to be listened to when we speak, paying respect toeach other's voice is important. Australian history is a narrativethat stretches back at least 65000 years. It is important toknow and share each other's stories from our history. We cansee our history reflected through the stories that we share.Together let's share each other's truth through our stories, andbreak down misconceptions about Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander peoples.

New Teacher

We welcome a new teacher to Mullaway Primary School, MissRigoni; who will be starting at Mullaway Primary School at thestart of Term 3. Miss Rigoni will initially be supporting our Stage3 teachers before becoming our Stage 2 Lilly Pilly teacher inWeek 9, Term 3, for the remainder of 2019; as Mrs Martincommences her Maternity Leave.

Miss Rigoni, who is currently teaching at Narranga PublicSchool was able to visit our school on the morning of Friday,June 28th, to meet our staff and students.

Multicultural Public Speaking

Congratulations to our four public speaking representativeswho participated in the Multicultural Perspectives PublicSpeaking Competition at Frank Partridge VC Public School onThursday, June 27th for the Mid-North Coast Finals.

We achieved an amazing result with Lara winning the Stage2 division and Lily receiving the runners-up award of HighlyCommended in the Stage 3 division!

Dozens of schools across the mid-north coast participate inthis competition, with many of these schools having more thantwice the enrolments of Mullaway. To win two of the sixavailable awards is an outstanding achievement and a reflectionof the quality public speaking program that we have at ourschool.

Our four representatives were the respective top two finalistsfrom Stage 2 and 3 in our intra-school competition, which washeld in Term 1.

Lara and Niah's respective topics were: Understanding, and;Watch Your Language.Lily and Caroline's topic was: Human Rights and Wrongs.Lara will represent our school at the next level, the North CoastRegional Finals.Well-done to our awesome foursome; Lara, Niah, Lily andCaroline!

Mitchell Family Fundraiser

Our Student Representative Council (SRC) held a "come asyour favourite team” gold coin fundraiser on Thursday, June27th; raising $360.00 for the Mitchell family.

Harry and Jack are former students at Mullaway Primary Schooland their father, Scott; is currently undergoing treatment forleukaemia.

The idea for the fundraiser was initiated by the students whoare friends of Harry and Jack.

We wish the Mitchell family all the best and trust that the fundswill contribute to reducing the financial burden involved withtravelling and treatment costs.

Thank you to our SRC and Ms Broekman, our SRC coordinator;for organising the fundraising initiative.

Stage 2 STEM

Our Stage 2 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering andMathematics) group has been busy designing the next craze inchildren's toys.

Students planned and refined their product to a specific designcriterion using critical and creative thinking.

They have utilised 3D creation software to produce a digitalmodel which will be 3D printed once complete.

STEM education develops important skill-sets for studentsthrough hands-on project based learning; aimed at meeting thehigh demands of future scientific and technological advances.

All students have enjoyed the design process and are excitedto 3D print their final product.

Premier’s Debating Challenge

Our Mullaway debating team travelled to Grafton Public Schoolon Monday, June 24th, to participate in the Premier's DebatingChallenge.

Whilst we lost both debates against the larger school, theadjudicators commended our team for their excellentperformance and said that the result was very close. This initself was a great achievement, particularly considering that forboth debates; our school arguably had the greater challenge.Mullaway were the negative team for the following debatingtopics:

1. Governments should ban ads that contain unhealthythings

2. Governments should promote girls participating incontact sports by making it free.

Kids In The Kitchen

Last week was Kids in the Kitchen week at Mullaway PrimarySchool and we were cooking tapas style.

On the menu was: Tammie Tomato Treats, Patty PotatoShepards Pie, Piper Pineapple Hawaiian Snacks, CarloCucumber Snacks, and; Billie Banana Pancakes Stack.

Eating well involves eating a variety of fresh ingredients and ourtapas theme certainly covered all the colours of the rainbow.

The format in Term 2 is for each group of students to create oneof the tapas dishes and at the end all the dishes are shared.

It is a wonderful initiative which not only gives our students anessential life-skill but also introduces them to a range of newand delicious healthy eating options.

Kids in the Kitchen is only possible due to the commitmentand dedication of our teachers and our parent and communityvolunteers. We appreciate your support!

Paper Plane Competition

During afternoon break in Week 8, students from all stages hadthe opportunity to compete in a paper plane competition. Therewas a large number of contenders and some great resultsachieved. Students participated in two competition categories;airtime and distance.

Well done to our winners, who were presented a certificate atour Wednesday school assembly.

Thank you also to Mr Grant and the students who helped runthe event each day.

Safety in School ZonesCoffs/Clarence PD, NSW Traffic Highway Command and CoffsHarbour City Council are continuing their patrols andenforcement around School Zones targeting 8am to 9:30amand 2:30pm to 4pm peak times.

Motorists should be aware of hefty fines for offences detectedin school zones.

School zones offences attract an increase in the fines anddemerit points in an effort to reduce the occurrence of offencesand therefore increase the safety of other motorists andpedestrians, school children, in school zones.

Motorists are reminded that the speed limit during school zonesis 40kph. Don't use your mobile phone whilst driving andensure you park legally.

Make sure your children and our children arrive safely to school,hold their hand.

Dangerous driving behaviour around schools puts children atrisk.

Motorists should also be aware of the annual increase in finesfrom the 1st July, 2019.

P&C Annual A-thon

Live Life Well Colour Run-a-thon 2019

It’s on again!!!!! It’s going to be exciting!!!!

On Friday, 5th July, 2019 all MullawayPrimary School children will participate in aColour Run a-thon. The Colour Run-a-thon is aimed atpromoting physical activity and the importance of a healthylifestyle as well as learning to get along with others in a socialsetting.

This event has been initiated by the P&C as one of theirfundraising events for 2019 and supported by the MullawayTeaching Staff.

All children are invited to participate. The event is staged withinthe school grounds. During the Colour Run-a-thon the childrenwill run and / or walk continually for one hour and complete asmany laps of their circuit as possible.

ALL Sponsorship forms are to be returned by Friday 5th July.All children who have their forms returned by this date will go inthe Lucky draw to win one of 10 $50.00 Plaza vouchers and bein with a chance to be the highest fund raiser for the school.

There are great prizes to be won!!!!!

Don’t forget there is a Pizza Party for the HighestFundraising 25 students.

The Winners assembly will take place on Wednesday, 24th July,2019.

Gumboot LottoAs our last fundraising event for our Adopt-A-Cow Campaignwe are having Gumboot Lotto, which will be held on themorning of the last day of this Term, 5th July. Students willdonate a gold coin to participate, throwing a gumboot into a100’s square. That square then becomes theirs. At the end ofthe throws Mr Deagan’s Secret Square will be revealed and

the student who has landed on the nominated square, or theclosest to, will win the prize money of $10.

All parents are welcome to attend and participate along withtheir child/children.

Stay and join in the fun of our colour run, just a gold coindonation.

All money raised will go to our farmers.

Peer SupportStudents had lots of fun jumping in the Learning Pit and workingtogether to make their robots during our Peer Support sessionon Tuesday, June 25th.

Waste AuditMullaway PS Waste Audit and Changes to WasteCollection at School, Term 3.

We are currently assessing our waste impact at Mullaway PS aspart of the MAD Green Grant from Coffs Harbour City Council.As a result we have identified soft plastics as a major source ofwaste for our school. These include biscuit and chip wrappers,as well as cling wrap and zip lock bags.

To increase awareness of the impact this plastic waste hason our environment and to help reduce this waste stream atMullaway we are asking for your help. From next term, Term 3,we will be asking students to take their soft plastic waste homewith them to dispose of. More information will be provided tostudents and families as we make this transition.

We are hoping that this will lead to increased awareness aroundthe impact our everyday choices have on our preciousenvironment. Thank you.

Touch FootballOn Monday, our boy's touch football team travelled to CorindiPublic School for the 2nd round of the PSSA KnockoutCompetition. The boys arrived to a challenging environment.The whole school was out in full support of Corindi, but ourboys weren't fazed. We held a tremendous defensive line andforced Corindi to make passing errors. We were quick topounce on the opportunities. Soul ran through a tight gap forour first try, and Jax snagged a wonderful intercept for our2nd. Cooper dove across the line in the corner, but was pulledup - as the dummy-half can't score in touch footy. Up 2-0 athalf time! After a quick break, the boys were back on the field.Fatigue set in for both teams and opportunities began openingup. Jax made another darting and weaving run to score our3rd try. Corindi hit back with a quick try of their own andwere gaining momentum. The crowd's roar intensified! Stonecrossed again in the corner, but the ref pulled it back for a latetag. A great team effort with a string of fine passes saw Cooperhit a gap and cross for our 4th try! Again, Corindi hit backwith another try of their own. Our boys managed to hold theirnerve and breathed a sigh of relief when the final horn sounded.Mullaway was victorious: 4-2!

On to the next round against Bellingen early next term.

Thank you to our team's parents who were able to assist withtransport to Corindi and to our boys' touch football coordinator,Mr Neal.

2019 Premier’s Spelling BeeThe Premier’s Spelling Bee is on again this year. This year eachclass from 3-6 will have two of their best spellers compete ina school final early in Term 3. Two representatives from eachstage will go on to represent Mullaway at the Regional Final.

WOOLGOOLGA ROTARY’S MONSTERMONTHLY AUCTION

1st Saturday each month.

The Rotary Club of Woolgoolga holds their monster auction onthe first Saturday of every month (except January). A significantportion of the funds raised goes to supporting programs forlocal school students.

Head down to the Rotary compound and shed behind theWoolgoolga CWA building, beside the Diggers RSL club, andcheck out the bargains available.

Smaller items will be on sale from 10am, with the larger itemsto be auctioned off from 1pm.
