Principals ReportFriday 28th April sees the beginning of Catholic Education Week across the Diocese of Sale. Our school, along with the 42 other Catholic schools in the Dioceses will celebrate Catholic Education Week from 28 April to 5 May. The theme for this year’s celebrations is ‘Unity in Diversity’.

As Catholic schools, we are called to do more than just pass on the faith: we are invited to translate our faith into deeds so we are truly living God’s Word. Catholic Education Week is an opportunity for all Catholic schools to celebrate our distinctive mission and share things that are special about our schools.

We will be hosting a number of events during Catholic Education Week which celebrate our school community and the uniqueness that is bought to it by a diverse range of members. As Mother Teresa stated, “I can do things you cannot; you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things.” This quote signifies the need for all members to be appreciated and celebrated for the gifts they bring to our school. It also shows us that with unity we can achieve anything.

Our week will begin on Monday 1st May with a prayer service to celebrate the opening of Catholic Education Week and St Joseph the Worker Feast day. This will be held in the 4/5 learning space at 9.15am and all members of the school community are invited. For the remainder of the day children will be put into multi-age groups and will participate in a variety of activities which will involve using many of their different gifts and skills.

Tuesday 2nd May is grandparents or special persons day. Children will be given the opportunity to invite grandparents or a special person to school between 11.30am-1pm where they will be able to participate in activities in the classroom and perhaps discuss how education has changed over the years.

Thursday 4th May we will be opening the school to all members of the community including prospective parents for 2018 to come along and have a tour of our school. The 4/5 students will be preparing and hosting a special morning tea for all parents and we will also be celebrating both past and current parents who have contributed to making St Joe’s the great school it is today.

I look forward to seeing many of you during this special week and continuing to work in unity with you all to achieve great things for the school community.

Winter Sport for Grade 5 and 6 Students

Round 1 of Winter Sport begins May 5. Winter Sport is a wonderful opportunity for students in grade five and six to try out team sports against other primary schools in our local area. Because we are a small school we combine with St Laurences to make the Combined Registered Schools team which gives us the numbers to compete against the larger schools. Each round, St Joseph’s will be fielding a football team but the other sports will vary between basketball, t-Ball, volleyball, soccer and netball.

Round 1 May 5th Combined Reg. V Korumburra at St Joes

Round 2 May 12th St Joes V Chairo

Round 3 June 2nd St Joseph’s V _______TBC

Round 4 June 9th Combined Reg. V Inverloch/Kongwak

Round 5 June 16th Leongatha V Combined Reg.

We are keen to hear from any parents who would be keen to act as a coach or umpire for one or more weeks of Winter Sport. If you can assist please notify Nat Kratz or the office staff. Sports uniform will need to be worn on these days.

ANZAC DayAs a celebration of Anzac Day the school held a special service on Monday 24th April. We were lucky to have four representatives from the RSL join us for the service and spend time with the children. A special thank-you to Reuben Strentz who came back to join us and played the last post for us. Everyone involved did a wonderful job.

Our Grade 6 captains and vice captains were also lucky enough to represent the school at the Dawn Service along with Michelle Charlton. The students did a wonderful job here is a little about their experience:

On Anzac day as school and vice captains we went to the dawn service at 6 o’clock. It was raining so we had to do it inside the scout hall. Even though we did it inside it was a great experience. Everyone there was very respectful, on the special occasion in Korumburra. The Korumburra Primary School sang a lovely song to start with on Two Little Boys. The Scouts who had come had supplied everyone breakfast. We would like to thank the men from the RSL committee for coming to the dawn service. By Ava and Valentino

Blood BrothersOn Friday 21st April the grade 6 students travelled to Wonthaggi to watch the Mary MacKillop Production ‘Blood Brothers’ this was a very moving and well put together show that was enjoyed by all. We thank the Mary MacKillop staff and students for allowing us to be part of this.

AwardsCongratulations to all of our award winners from last week and week 9 of Term 1. Keep up the great work you are all doing.
