Correction Day: A reminder to parents that next Friday, 6th June is Correction

Day. It is a pupil-free day across the State. Teachers will be

finalising assessments and beginning the writing of Reports.

Year 10 Counselling: The highlight of my week was having the opportunity of hold-

ing small group vocational counselling sessions with Year 10

students and getting to speak with students about their aspira-

tions. It was time to gauge how each student is tracking and

whether they have clear ideas about where they might be go-

ing. All except one out of the 17 that I saw, have arranged

Work Experience and that person, is just waiting for paperwork

to come back. Some have Work Experience placements that

are very exciting and should help confirm their interest in a

certain field or not. As well, it has been a good opportunity to

encourage students to be working towards being offered a Unit

3 and 4 in Year 11, next year.

I have encouraged the students I spoke with to do as much

course and job exploration as possible, to really firm up ideas

of what sort of subjects they should think about taking over the

next two years. I also encouraged them to attend Open Days at

There has been quite a team, counselling the Year 10s an din

all , about 190 students involved in these discussions. Next

week we will catch up with those who were away or some-

where else. Assistant Principals, John Munro and Maree

Gaffney agreed that the small groups are a wonderful way of

connecting with the Year 10s and giving them a chance just to

talk. Some that came down to the office were at first a little

universities. Mr Pitt will advertise these in third term and it is a wonderful way to go and get a feel of what a

university is like and what is on offer. Certainly, La Trobe University is our closest university and the tertiary

placement of choice for most of our exiting Year 12 students, so it is important for parents and students to take

a look.

There has been quite a team of teachers and College leaders, counselling the Year 10s and in all, about 190 stu-

dents have had focussed time. Next week we will catch up with those who were away or somewhere else. As-

sistant Principals, John Munro and Maree Gaffney agreed that the small groups are a wonderful way of con-

necting with the Year 10s and giving them a chance just to talk. Some that came down to the office were at

first a little nervous but once the ice was broken and we got down to talking about career directions, I think

generally, they were pleased to have a chance to speak about themselves and future directions. So if your Year

10 comes home and says they were called to the Principal’s or Assistant Principal’s office, then parents please

don't jump to the wrong conclusion.

2014-15 Premier’s Spirit ANZAC Prize: Applications for the 2014-15 Spirit of ANZAC Prize are now open. This prize is designed to inspire young

people to explore the ethos displayed by the ANZACs at Gallipoli and the Western Front and reflect how those

values apply in our communities today. The Prize is open to students in Years 9 and 10 at all Victorian second-

ary schools.

Twelve students from across Victoria will travel on an overseas study tour to Gallipoli and the Western Front,

the World War sites which are of such cultural, historical and military significance. The tour will take place

during Term 1 in 2015. In addition, 16 regional finalists will participate in a study tour within Australia.

Entry forms and further information, including examples of successful entries, tour blogs and photos from 2013

are available to view and download at www.veterans.vic.gov.au A reference is part of the application and I am

only too happy to write a reference. However for references, I need a little time and need to talk to the student

asking for a reference. If you are interested, Mrs Jones in A Block has been giving students information.

It is important to remember that Morgan Lobe who was College Captain in 2011, actually was one of 12, in

2009, to travel to South Korea and Gallipoli.

Autumn Night: This year’s Autumn Night was arguably one of the best in terms of the quality of the performances. The Thea-

tre was three quarters full with parents and grandparents and they were just so impressed. The Brass Ensemble

opened with a flourish and then the Senior Choir conducted by Merran Wickham performed three songs. They

opened with ‘A Place By the River’ written by Eddie Perfect which is a piece with great vocal challenge. Then

they struck up Duke Ellington’s ‘Things Aint What They Used to Be”. The piece they have sung on several

occasions, Sting’s ‘Fragile’, continues to be their point of excellence. Chelsea Tsaparis is the commanding solo

performer for this piece and she and the other members of the choir combined to create a hauntingly beautiful

performance of this song.

Jade Ingvarson-Favretto accompanied by her father, Michael Ingvarson, gave her VCE soloist performance,

singing Kate Bush’s, ‘The Man With the Child in His Eyes’. As we expect from Jade, she gives her all and her

all, is nothing but the best. After this vocal opening, the Intermediate Guitars performed ‘Mediterrean Sun-

dance’ and ‘Six Teens’. Marcus Kurban has such a depth of guitar talent and he must have been proud of his

group of seven boys and one girl. From the Intermediates, his Seniors took the stage to play a guitar version of

Scott Joplin’s ‘The Entertainer’. This ragtime piece, written for piano, sounds entirely different when played

on guitar and so refreshing too. The seniors completed their set with ‘House of the Rising Sun Funk’. The fa-

miliar sixties’ tune was there but again, this was a totally surprising rendition.

From guitars to flutes, Patty Wu, Charlotte Hunter and Katie Ji are flute players who confidently performed

‘Sonato No.1’ by James Hooke. This trio gave a fine performance which demonstrated their immense skills.

It was the VCE duo of Paul Kascamanidis and Jade Ingvarson –Favretto whose superb performance of ‘I See

Fire’, by Ed Sheeran which completely wowed the audience before Interval. Both Paul and Jade are serious

musicians and this was a performance that truly demonstrated their combined talents. I am surprised the audi-

ence did not call for an encore as their harmonies were a musical delight.

Again, arguably the most talked about item of the evening for its innovation was the Percussion ensemble.

Page 3: Principal’s Report - ViewBank College Joplin’s ‘The Entertainer’. This ragtime piece, written for piano, sounds entirely different when played on guitar and so refreshing too

Conductor Anthony Citino always likes to create something right out there and he and his percussionists did not

disappoint. Can you imagine playing the drums and other percussion instruments in a totally dark theatre? Can

you imagine sitting there and listening with a heighted awareness of only the music? This was almost a surreal

performance. It was very sensory and I am sure it reached everyone in the audience, almost as if on some pri-

meval level. Their first item was ‘Hemiola Jam’ composed by the Senior Percussion Ensemble and this fea-

tured almost the entire array of percussion instruments. ‘Tibetan Prelude’ was written by Anthony himself and,

followed by ‘Summons the Spirits’ by K Tuck, were also played in the dark. This entire performance was

compelling. Certainly, parents that I have spoken to since that evening, keep talking about the creativity of the

performance.

I like to think Neil Jowsey’s Bass Quartet gave an almost base version of an ‘a cappella’ rendition of ‘Green

Bass Blues’. When I make that comment, I am likening them to a group of singers that harmonise without

backing instruments. Here the bases performed without any other instruments and they sounded great.

We have not heard from the ‘Swimming Koalas’ this year but they have regrouped under the baton of Cameron

Stark. Who are The Swimming Koalas you might be forgiven for asking? This is a low brass group featuring

tubas and they gave a toe-tapping version of the great Dixeyland Traditional pieces, ‘In The Good Old Summer

Time’ and ‘When the Saints Go Marching In’. We are glad the ‘Koalas’ are back.

For those who love sixties songs, the Intermediate Choir accompanied on piano by Patti Wu, opened with an

arrangement called, ‘60s Rewind Medley’. This was very popularly received and so was their second number,

‘Shake it Out’, by Florence and the Machine’. It is evident that we have some great younger singers coming

through. Merran Wickham will have lots of talent to extend in future years.

Mr Shane Crowe, President of FOM gave a short speech of thanks to the Instrumental Music Teachers before

congratulating students and his group FOM. His group FOM did another fantastic job in organizing this event

and providing a quality supper. Shane asked Chelsea Tsaparis to pick out the winning raffle tickets and the

nicest thing was that the $250 Heidelberg Traders Prize went to a grandfather who had earlier lost his wallet.

So he went home a very happy man; his wallet returned and he had $250 to spend in Heidelberg. There were

lots of great prizes so on top of a ‘great evening’ of entertainment so many went going home with unexpected

goodies. However, not before Chelsea introduced Sarah Williams’ ‘Senior Strings’ for the finale. They were

actually playing the Finale from ‘Seranade for Strings’ by Tchaikovsky and this, and their performance of In-

cantations’ by Richard Meyer, were in every way such a polished end to the evening.

The Autumn Festival has now regretfully, concluded. My congratulations to Acting Director of Music, Sarah

Williams for her leadership and to her team of Instrumental Musicians for their very evident commitment to our

young musicians. The parents who make up Friends of Music, have done a mighty job to ensure the success of

these two occasions. Their tireless care to attention has translated to a great boost in funds to support the Music

Program of the College. When the final amount is determined, then we will publish their successful fund rais-

ing but in the meantime, I wish to publically acknowledge their great work. Again, I would like to thank Shane

Crowe for his work in coordinating FOM. Particular congratulations goes to Jade and Paul for their VCE solos

and in recognition of their excellence. To Chelsea Tsaparis, as Performing Arts Captain, she has been a fine

host on both occasions. Bravo Chelsea!!! To all students who performed last Thursday night, the one thing

that was obvious, was that you were well-rehearsed and really in command of your performances. No matter

whether it was the choir, a band , an ensemble, a quartet, trio, duet or solo, you were all fabulous! Our Autumn

Festival gave us two great occasions to see and hear Viewbank College musicians being their best.

State School Spectacular Tickets: State Schools Spectacular is just that: SPECTACULAR! It features student performers across the State coming

together in a big show that will take place on Saturday, 13th September. There will be two performances: 1pm

and 6.30pm at Hisense Arena.

This is always an amazing showcase of the talent and energy of students and well worth a afternoon or night

out. The best thing about the Spectacular, is that it totally debunks the negative myths about young people. It

is a show of song, dance, colour, excitement and fun and I always leave in awe of what young people have to

offer. This year, it is even more important to go along as Jade Ingvarson-Favretto of Year 12, songwriter and

singer of note, will be performing a solo. A solo spot is an accolade and an affirmation of Jade’s talent.

The tickets for the State Schools Spectacular, have just gone on sale this week and will sell out fast, even

though it is a show in September. To purchase tickets, click on the following link Ticketek

Year 12 Exam Week

The exam week is now over and students resumed their normal classes today. We hope students gained from

the exam experience and that they were able to learn meaningfully about themselves and their knowledge and

skills. Thank you to Ms Allan and Mr Bettiol on their meticulous planning and superb organisation of the

week.

Year 12 Tertiary Information Service (TIS) excursion

Last Tuesday, all Yr 12 students arrived at La Trobe University where a comprehensive presentation on path-

ways to tertiary education, scholarships, VTAC preferences and more were explained. Students then had an

opportunity to peruse the stands of exhibitors from major universities and tertiary institutions. Students are now

hopefully better equipped to make more informed decisions about their tertiary options. Thanks to Mr Pitt for

organising the event and to the staff who accompanied our students on the day.

Years 10 & 11 Exam Week

Monday June 2 – Thursday June 5

The Well-Being Leaders, Ms Thatcher and Ms Sissons have held assemblies and timetables have been distribut-

ed (see below).

Years 10 and 11 exams are undertaken for the purpose of establishing levels of student

performance over the semester’s work. Exams provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate the

knowledge, skills and understanding they do have across the subject content. They also help students develop

effective study habits and prepare them for future examinations such as VCE exams.

We wish all of our Years 10 & 11 students the very best of luck during the exam week.

Year 11 Change of Subject

Ms Sissons has outlined the process for requesting a change or withdrawal from a Unit 2 subject. For various

reasons, students may wish to change a subject they have been studying in Unit 1. Students considering taking

this option are urged to consider the implications carefully and to speak to parents and consult Mr Pitt (Careers)

and Mrs Williams (VCE Coordinator) before proceeding with a subject change. Please note that completing

this request form will not guarantee a subject change. Changes of subject will be dependent on timetable con-

straints. The final date for a change of subject is Friday June 27.

General Achievement Test (GAT)

Wednesday June 11

All students undertaking the study of any Unit 3 subject will be required to complete the General Achievement

Test (GAT).

The GAT is a three hour examination commencing at 10.00am and concluding at 1.15pm. It is a test of general

knowledge and skills in:

written communication

mathematics, science and technology

humanities, the arts and social sciences.

Students were briefed on the GAT at an assembly today. While there is no specific revision which students can

undertake, they have been encouraged to familiarise themselves with the format and type of GAT questions.

Visit http://www.vcaa.vic.edu.au/Pages/vce/exams/gat/aboutgat.aspx for more information and for past GAT

papers. A limited number of hard copies are also available from me in the Coordinators Office.

It is important that students take the GAT seriously and perform their best on it, as it is used to obtain a Derived

Exam Score (DES) should special provision be required at the time of the exams. Other important information:

Students are required to wear their full school uniform on the day of the GAT.

A BBQ lunch will follow the GAT in the J-block courtyard.

Yr 12 students will be dismissed after the BBQ.

Yrs 10 & 11 students will be required to attend Periods 5 & 6 as usual.

History News - Competitions In addition to the two competitions mentioned in a recent newsletter, details of another competition have been

forwarded to the College.

Living Spirit Fellowship This is the ‘Living Spirit’ Fellowship, awarded annually by the Greensborough RSL Sub-Branch. These fellow-

ships were established to ‘nurture younger generations to understand the part played by many Australians in en-

suring the great freedom we enjoy today is never forgotten.’

Students are required to make a submission in accordance with an Application form and are asked to state what

their expectations are regarding a visit to Hellfire Pass and what message they would bring back to the commu-

nity. This is an amazing opportunity for students to take up. The Fellowship provides airfares, accommodation

and organised tour to Thailand for ANZAC Day 2015 for the successful student and his/her parent.

Application forms are now available. Students should see Mrs. Jones in the A block staffroom if they are inter-

ested. This fellowship is open to students in years 10, 11 and 12. The closing date for all submissions is Friday

24th October.

A reminder of the other two competitions:

Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Competition The Premier’s Spirit of Anzac Prize inspires young people to explore the ethos displayed by the Anzacs at Gal-

lipoli and the Western Front and reflect on how those values apply in Victorian communities today. The Prize is

open to students in year 9 and 10 at all Victorian secondary schools. Through the competition 12 students from

across Victoria will travel on an overseas study tour to Gallipoli and the Western Front.

Students are required to respond to a question about the ANZAC centenary and can enter research essays, art-

works, musical compositions or audio, video or web-based presentations. Entries must be received by Friday

17th October, 2014.

All students in year 9 and 10 are encouraged to think about participating in this competition.

See www.veterans.vic.gov.au for more information.

Anzac Day Dawn Service Tour See www.anzaccentenary.vic.gov.au for information on how to apply.

Students interested in applying for any or all of these tours should see Mrs. Jones in the A block staff room.
