Autumn Festival: A Big Week of Music in the College

While Albert Einstein is never equated with music, his com-

ment about music is perhaps really apt for this week. “If I

were not a physicist, I would probably be a musician. I often

think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life

in terms of music.” And how true is that? This week with

such a big and varied fare of music, I am sure we all found

ourselves completely transported as it gave us permission to

put away our immediate cares, woes etc and just have the lux-

ury hearing our students striving to be their best. We have

just under 300 students involved in our Music program and so

it was very heartening to think that just on 570 mums, dads,

grandparents, siblings and friends came out to cheer them on.

The Autumn Brunch would not have been possible without a

small army of Friends of Music parents. President Shane

Crowe and his wife Fiona have worked tirelessly to do the

College proud. While it is far too dangerous to single out par-

ents who have worked over the two occasions, Julie Gardi-

ner’s spread of prizes was a wonder to behold and the raffles

certainly were enthusiastically supported. Julie, a very big

thanks! Marion Tsaparis led the food preparation team and on

both occasions, I think our patrons were happy with the good-

ies on offer.

FOM’s astute Treasurer, Elizabeth Price has lots of counting and tallying to do. Once a final figure for the

fund-raising is reached I will publish it in a newsletter. But to all Friends of Music who helped on Saturday,

Sunday and last night as well–a big, big THANK You! When parents get involved, it is not only a great thing

for the College but also a great chance for families to socialize a bit and I hope, feel as though they are valued

for their contribution in time and effort.

I would like to acknowledge all our prize donors, from the Mums and Dads who responded to my newsletter

requests, to our very generous local traders and some good corporate citizens, a bit further afield. Please look

at the accompanying list of donors and support them where you can. I wish to acknowledge the talent and

then, the wonderful generosity of Nadine Dudek who donated her beautiful water colour painting of a Lathams

Snipe to be raffled. Last night there was a lots of competitive banter over this painting as I along with many,

many others had our eyes on the prize! The lucky winner was Jackie T. Another FOM parent, Katharina

Kleiminger generously donated Sundays second prize $200 on behalf of her business, The East Melbourne

Language School. The bakery items were supplied by Piedmontes Supermarket in North Fitzroy with a huge

discount thanks to Trevor Cleve, parent of Hannah in Year 8.

Another Friend of Music who worked energetically all day Saturday and Sunday, is Lionel Mrocki, who to-

gether with the student tech team, led by Talfryn along with Alan, Liam, Tara, Alex and Will, did a mighty job

with the new surround sound system donated by FOM. Great work techs!

Our students were inspiring. Music Captain, Valentina Greisheimer has done a fantastic job to lead our Au-

tumn Festival. The two words that come to mind in describing her compering are ‘grace’ and ‘warmth’. Well

done Valentina! Music Director, Mrs Sarah Williams, has just come off a huge month of Music with the Music

Camp, the Music tutorial week and the two Autumn events. Sarah and her team are to be congratulated. The

team comprising Liz Arnaud, Patrick Broadbent, Lia Boulton, Anthony Citino, Cheryl Clark, Mark Eagling,

Craig Harrison, Neil Jowsey, Tom Krieg, Marcus Kurban, Wesley Mowson, Matt Poynter, Merran Wickham

and Andrew Van Gemert have demonstrated their enthusiastic mentoring of our young musicians. Well done!

Two people who worked quietly behind the scenes to make sure lots of the logistics were covered were: Music

Secretary Lisa Provis and Deanne Ioannidis.

Lastly our students have demonstrated that teamwork, practice and effort, as well as their love of music, when

it comes together is so rewarding. I am sure all in the audience on both occasions would agree that seeing our

students being their best is very uplifting. Two VCE soloists have had the opportunity to play something of the

repertoirs that they will play later in the year and demonstrate their advanced skills. Well done to Bryce Gardi-

ner, for his solo drum performance at the Brunch and Jason McCall, for his saxophone solo last night. Three

cheers to all students involved.

Last night I looked around our rather tired theatre and just thought how exciting it will be when we hold our

first Autumn Night in the new centre, hopefully in 2017, all being well.

The winners of the main raffle prizes for the Autumn Brunch were:

Year 10, 11 and 12 students are invited to apply for this fellowship. The successful applicant for the ‘Living

Spirit Fellowship’ will go on an 8-10 fully conducted tour with a parent/guardian to Thailand/Myanmar. They

will attend the 101st Anniversary ANZAC Dawn Service at Hellfire Pass on 25th April, 2016. The airline tick-

ets, accommodation and travel expenses to Thailand will be all inclusive.

Those Year 10, 11 and 12 students who may be interested, are required to make a submission using the Appli-

cation Form which also includes a Questionnaire Section covering a range of topics. Students will need to do

some research before they submit their application but there is plenty of time. Marks are awarded for the cor-

rectness of answers. Importantly, students need to state what their expectations are regarding a visit to Hellfire

Pass and what message they would bring back to their community. The 3 to 5 shortlisted candidates will be

interviewed.

Timeline:

Friday, 23rd October, 2015 - last day for applications.

In November, after a short-listing of the top three to five candidates, interviews will be conducted to

ascertain the successful candidate.

April 2016 - tour of Thailand/Myanmar and Hellfire Pass.

This opportunity is offered to local schools and colleges. To date Viewbank College has not had a recipient

but we hope there is a student out there who is interested in Australian history and particularly, in exploring

this particular field of military history and really, has a go to take off this fellowship.

Champion of the Week:

Hearty congratulations to Jonah Hope of Year 7 who has been selected to represent Victoria and the area of

North East Melbourne in the National Little League Baseball Championships this year. The team will be trav-

elling to Lismore via the Gold Coast departing on Wednesday, 3rd June and arriving back on Wednesday, 10th

June 2015. The Championships will feature twenty All-Star Little League teams from across Australia over a

six-day tournament. The winning team will receive automatic qualification for the Little League World Series

in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, USA. We hope Jonah has a great time and learns lots to further his baseball

skills.

I have found out that the Little League is the world’s largest youth sports program, and 2015 will mark the

ninth year Australia has been a part of the chartered Little League family. The sport continues to grow under

the guidance of Baseball Australia and Australia is currently the fastest growing Little League country in the

world. If you wish to find out more about the program, please contact 0403 285 734

or visit http://www.littleleague.org.au/ALLC

Vale: Pamela Fordham

Pam Fordham, mother of Erich and Jack Fordham (Graduating Class of 2011) worked tirelessly

as co-leader of FOPAVA, along with Deb Tully, to ensure that the performing arts of music and

drama and the visual arts and technology were given every support. Both Pam’s boys were very

keen students in drama, music, visual arts and technology. Erich, a pianist, became stage

manager for the College Productions (2010/11) and Jack, was an amazing singer, dancer, actor and comedic

performer in a number of College productions. Jack has designed the sets for the last three College productions

and Erich has given support behind the scenes after going on to university. Pam was so supportive of her boys

and the programs they were involved in and as a result, the College reaped the benefits of her enormous

contribution. As a College, we very sincerely pass on our condolences to John, Erich and Jack for their devas-

tating loss.

Senior School News

Key dates:

Years 10 - 12 Exam Week – May 25 – May 29 (see below)

Exam Week

The Senior School Exams will be conducted over one week, beginning Monday May 25. All students have re-

ceived their timetables and information related to protocols and expectations.

Students will need to ensure they allow themselves enough time to arrive to school, go to their locker and get

themselves organised with the correct equipment before moving to the exam room. The lockers will be open for

students to store bags, mobile phones and other devices. These WILL NOT be permitted into the examination

room.

Students are to attend in full winter school uniform.

There are several students whose timetables include clashes; in such instances the relevant Well-being Leader will

notify the student of the rescheduled session.

Exams are very useful in providing students with experience in writing to time under exam conditions and, partic-

ularly for students undertaking a Units 3/4 study, answering questions that mirror the final exams. To support

their preparation for the semester exams, students are strongly encouraged to study effectively and purposefully,

and seek assistance from teachers in order to reinforce their understanding of concepts and material covered

during Terms 1 and 2. To support our students during their exams, the Library will be open to all Years 10 – 12

students as a silent study area during normal school hours.

If a student is absent, it is strongly recommended that a medical certificate is supplied and that the student’s Well

-being Leader is notified. Exams missed due to absence will not be rescheduled and either an NA (med. cert.) or

N (no med. cert.) will be recorded on the student’s June report.

PLEASE RING THE SENIOR SCHOOL SUPPORT OFFICER, MRS ANN SHAW on 9091 3861, IN THE CASE OF EMER-

GENCIES, LATE ARRIVALS OR ABSENCE.

These exams will be reported on in the Semester 1/Unit 1/Unit 3 reports in June.

The GAT (General Achievement Test)

Wednesday June 10

All students undertaking a Units 3/4 study must sit the GAT.

The GAT is a three hour examination commencing at 10.00am and concluding at 1.15pm. It is a test of general

knowledge and skills in:

written communication

mathematics, science and technology

humanities, the arts and social sciences.

Students will be briefed on the GAT at an assembly after the exams.

Pleasantville Creative Task

For my Pleasantville Creative Task I decided to get creative and do something a little different. So I

decided to make a ‘Rose Cupcake Bouquet’. I chose to make a bouquet as the first change that occurs

happen to a rose. The bouquet represents a number of different things we see in the movie

‘Pleasantville’. The roses are black and white. This is because everything obviously starts off as be-

ing black and white in the movie. However, there’s the one red rose as it’s the first thing to turn to

colour in Pleasantville. Other than just change, colour, especially red, also represents emotion. In this

case red symbolises love, pleasure and curiosity. The rose itself is a flower usually given to people

who hold a special place in our hearts.

To make this Rose Cupcake Bouquet I used:

- Chocolate Cupcakes

- Flower Pot

- Styrofoam Ball

- Black Tissue Paper

- Toothpicks

- Buttercream Frosting

- Gel Food Colouring

- Piping bag fitted with a tip Anastasia Grekos

Monday 11/5/2015 Debating Report

This round of interschool debating was one of great importance as it was the beginning of the secret

topic rounds for this year. Although not partaking in the secret topic aspect of the round, Viewbank D

Grade consisting of Sean Mortell, Jake Lonergan and Patrick Molony won their debate. The D grade

argued that we should abolish State Governments in Australia and the best speaker of the night went

to Jake. C Grade began their secret topic rounds with the notion that students should not be allowed

to become professional models. Though presenting a great case, Kate Bretel, Lakshmi Ganapathy and

Philip Tinsley lost their debate. B Grade’s secret topic was that wearing fur should be illegal. Isobel

Beasley, Joshua Sim and Lachlan McDowell won their debate with the best speaker being awarded to

Isobel. Although both A grade teams lost their debate, it was a controversial topic to say the least.

Arguing for the idea that unvaccinated children shouldn’t be allowed to attend public schools, my

team consisting of Jordan Miller, Toby Hope and myself as well as team 2 consisting of Andrew

Vassett, Lani Sellers and Cara Lonergan both were put to the test to write comprehensive arguments

in favour of something which at the time as a hot topic of discussion amongst the media with the Fed-

eral Government announcing the “No Jab, No Play” policy. Congratulations to all the students who

participated in this round, in particular to the students who are new to the exercise of secret topic de-

bates.
