Principal’s Message
I would like to start by saying good luck to
all of our graduating students as you move
on to the next stage in your lives. Our
hope is that all of you continue to be kind,
caring and compassionate citizens of the
world, contributing positively to our
vibrant Canadian society. I encourage you
to continue to live out the Ontario Catholic
School Graduate Expectations while you
carry on your relationship with Father
Robert and the St. Marguerite d’Youville
Parish community.
Parents, staff, Father Robert and members of our parish and
larger community have come together once again to offer
another fantastic school year for our students. We continue to be
recognized for our work in promoting a safe and inclusive school
climate. Together we are building a culture of peace, acceptance,
success and opportunity. I firmly believe that schools must be
focused on staff and student wellness. We work hard as a
community so that staff and students always feel a sense of
wellbeing, safety, connectedness and belonging so that they may
live their lives to the fullest. We have endeavored to help
students grow spiritually, academically, physically and socially
within the context of our faith.
Unfortunately, at the end of this school year we say goodbye to
some wonderful staff members who have been instrumental in
creating the culture at d’Y. Congratulations to Mr. Difederico on
his retirement after 35 years in Catholic Education. Mr.
Difederico has put so much care and effort into helping students
to reach their goals. Mr. “D” has helped to lead our school with
wisdom, experience, kindness, humility and integrity. Good luck
to Mrs. Campese who has been named as Vice Principal at John
Cabot and to the teachers transferring to other schools in our
board: Mr. Butkovic, Mrs. Seon, Mrs. Kulas and Mrs. Simon. We
thank them for their countless contributions to the d’Y
community.
As I complete my sixth year at d’Youville I will also have to say
goodbye as I begin a new position at St. Francis Xavier CSS in
September. I want to thank Father Robert and the SMD parish
community, our parents, our staff and students. In order to
provide a fulsome high school experience for students, a principal
depends greatly on collaborative relationships with these
groups. As the saying goes, it truly does take a village to raise a
child and I am thankful for all of your support.
I feel very blessed to have been part of the St. Marguerite
d’Youville Catholic School community. I have been able to
witness the continued significant progress in student achievement
and wellbeing. Our provincial testing scores and graduation rates
have consistently risen. We have been honoured with many
awards and recognition, launched a number of new program
initiatives to enhance the student’s experience. We have
celebrated so many successes with our many ROPSSAA
championships, and our Arts programs that continue to shine in
the community.
I extend my sincere gratitude to all our dedicated staff members.
Our Teachers, Educational Resource Workers, Support Workers,
Custodians and Office staff are truly amazing. I am personally
thankful for the time, effort, creativity and dedication they pour
into this school every day so that student life continues to
thrive. Their selfless generosity allows us to offer an outstanding
and differentiated academic program and an exhaustive list of
clubs, teams and other co-curricular activities that cater to our
wonderfully diverse population of students. I am convinced our
programming at d’Youville is the best in region. There is
something for everyone at d’Youville.
I wish you all of God’s blessings and good fortune in the years to
come.
Until we meet again…

Vice-Principal Farewell Message
As another school year ends it is with sadness that I say goodbye to St. Marguerite d'Youville. After three amazing years as a member of the
administration team I leave behind some amazing teachers and staff. More importantly I leave behind an enthusiastic and talented community of
learners.
Over these years I have had the opportunity to be a part of a spectrum of wonderful student activities. These activities ranged from experiencing our
annual grade nine school wide retreat to coaching senior girls basketball and walking through Times Square with art students. It was through these
experiences that I was able to see the, talent and spirit of our youth and their commitment to being a part of something bigger than themselves. I wish
all our students and staff the very best in the years ahead and thank them for welcoming me and letting me be a small part of their beautiful school
community.

From Your Catholic School
Trustee,
Brampton
Wards 9&10
Thankfully, the summer
weather is upon us and
with that, is the
beginning of the final
phase of classes and
exams for the 2015-2016
school year. It has been
a very successful year. Our new Director of
Education Marianne Mazzorato began leading
us in January. We look forward to working
with her over many years to come. With
excellent EQAO scores, outstanding
graduation rates that are among the highest in
the province and new initiatives to address
technology, student well being and diverse
learning , the success of this board continues to
be defined, in part, by our high levels of
success and achievement.
And while academic achievement is of course
paramount in our plans, our commitment to
helping each student fulfill their potential,
through the Ontario Catholic School Graduate
Expectations, means that our students graduate
with the tools to become good, solid,
contributing members of the communities in
which they will live.
We have recently celebrated Catholic
Education Week in our schools. It has been my
pleasure to attend liturgies, school Masses,
school concerts, school plays, talent shows,
dance-a-thons and much more. As your
trustee, I see the contributions of dedicated
teaching and support staff, administrators and
senior management who work together with
trustees to facilitate conditions to foster
success. I also see, firsthand, the important role
of our parents/guardians, working in concert
with the school and the parish in fostering
conditions for success and well-being. We are
blessed to have such wonderful, engaged and
dedicated Catholic School Councils that
support learning and student achievement as
well as promote community building in our
schools.
We are facing some financial challenges. We
are seeing cuts to our funding again from the
Ministry. We have made several million
dollars in expenditure reductions over the past
few years and will have to make further
reductions to ensure that our 2016-17 budget is
balanced. Ministry grants for school operating
costs have changed and are now tied to
enrolment levels. That means our schools
with enrolment that is lower than the
building’s capacity can impact funding, which
puts pressure on us to find other funding
sources, community partners to work with us
in our schools, or consider closing schools.
Despite challenges, we are committed to
delivering a balanced budget and providing
quality Catholic educational experiences to our
students. And we will.
So, as we begin to count down the end of the
2015-16 school year, I thank those principals
and vice principals in my schools who are
retiring or moving on to other schools. It has
been my sincere pleasure to work with you
every day. To our teaching and support staff,
thank you for your hard work and dedication
to Catholic education. I thank our parents/
guardians for choosing a Dufferin-Peel Catholic
education for your child(ren) and for
entrusting them into our care. It is a
responsibility for which we are grateful and
one that we cherish. To our students, thank
you for all you have done to contribute to the
life of your school. For those who are
graduating and moving on to post-secondary
education or the world of work, may God
continue to go with you and bless you on
your journeys. To our returning students and
families, I look forward to seeing you in
September.
I wish you many blessings and best wishes for
a peaceful and restful summer. May the good
Lord always hold you in the palm of His hand.
Thank you for choosing a Dufferin-Peel
Catholic Education
Chaplaincy
As I look back over this past year a lot of great memories come to mind. Dr. Andrew Simone
came and spoke to our school in October. There is a man who has chosen to follow Christ all the
way as he lives simply and collects goods to send to Mother Theresa’s sisters around the world.
What a delight to meet him and to contribute to his mission. (www.canadianfoodforchildren.net)
There have been so many liturgies and trips I couldn’t begin to list them all. There are a few that
stand out for me. One liturgy that stands out for me is the Ash Wednesday liturgy when a group
of students presented an original spoken word. I love it when we get creative and original.
There’s always something of the Spirit in creativity.
Of all the trips one that stands out the one to the Brantford Six Nations Reserve stands out for me.
It was powerful to meet the First Nations people. We encountered people whose identity is very
much tied in with their deep Spirituality. They also have tremendous resilience. There is incredible
strength in knowing who you are as a Spiritual being and as one with creation. They have lived
through brutality in the residential school system, and education is part of the healing and
reconciliation that continues. This is a picture of Geronimo, who lived in a residential school from
the age of four to fourteen. He is showing his tattoo that says “Survivor” and the number he was
given when he was there.
I hope we continue to work towards truth and reconciliation. The theme for our school year was Mercy. The Jubilee year of Mercy will
continue until the feast of Christ the King on November 20th. I hope that you have experienced the infinite mercy of God. It is an
incredibly transformative experience. Once a person has experienced the mercy of God we tend to become more merciful toward both
ourselves and others. Mercy is the way to peace and joy, and that is God’s wish for all of us.
Blessings to the graduates as you go on your way. Remember the good times we have enjoyed and all the growth you have achieved. For
those returning, we look forward to another great year next year.

STEM Learning at
St. Marguerite d’Youville
An emergent philosophy of 21st Century
Learning is that students should not be learning
course material in isolation, rather, subjects,
such as Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math (STEM) should be integrated together to
create a more authentic learning experience;
one that mimics the realities of the jobs of
tomorrow; where combined skills will be used
to combat various global issues, such as climate
change, water contamination and sustainable
agricultural practices. Students in both
elementary and secondary schools may not be
able to take on global issues alone, but they
were called upon by Samsung Canada to use
STEM to resolve a local issue in their school
community, city, town, or neighbourhood.
DY 21 VOICE, a group of devoted and
passionate grade 12 students at St. Marguerite
d’Youville Catholic Secondary School responded
to the STEM challenge and entered the
SAMSUNG SOLVE FOR TOMORROW contest
of 2016. Their mission is to give students
suffering from anxiety and depression in their
school a VOICE, or an outlet, to confide in
someone they feel comfortable with, without
being judged. Too often, students suffer from
mental illness alone, and are afraid to ask for
help.
To determine how best to suit the needs of
students suffering from mental illness in silence,
DY 21 VOICE, conducted a stratified, random
survey across all grades. The survey yielded two
important pieces of information: first, students
feel more comfortable accessing help via texting
and second, there is an equal percentage of
students who feel more comfortable talking to
an anonymous, trained peer, as opposed to a
trained adult.
Using the survey results, DY 21 VOICE
researched mental health issues and visited the
Centre for Addiction and Mental Health,
CAMH, in Toronto. The goals of this student
group were to help inform the design, and
implementation of an APP that would service
all students in the school community, who wish
to voice their mental health struggles via
texting. Two members of the group then
participated in safeTALK; a program that trains
participants to identify and engage individuals
with thoughts of suicide and connect them with
further help and care. The expectation is that
those students trained in safeTALK are then able
to respond to the anonymous student texts, via
the generated APP, to access support. Students
who suffer from depression and anxiety are
now able to access help from an anonymous
peer with the touch of a finger.
Under the supervision of teachers, Charla
Anderson (ARD/Mathematics) with the
assistance of Brian Pinto (Business), and the
support of Kevin Greco (Principal) and James
Chambers (Vice Principal), DY 21 VOICE was
actually one of 55 schools from approximately
750 applicants from across Canada, selected to
compete in the second round of this prestigious
contest. They proudly represented Dufferin-
Peel, as 1 of only 4 schools in Ontario to win a
prize package of technology for St. Marguerite
d’Youville Catholic Secondary School, valued at
$1500.
Congratulations DY 21 VOICE!

Experiential Learning
Experience
On May 25th students and teachers
from the A.C.C.E.S.S. program and
St. Thomas Aquinas had the
opportunity to experience the
culture, traditions and teachings of
First Nations peoples. We travelled
to Six Nations of the Grand River
Brantford for three days and two
nights and were able to take part in
many activities that helped students
understand the history of First
Nations peoples in Ontario.
Although just a brief glimpse into
their lives students visited a former
residential school, took part in
traditional dancing, spoke with
community elders, toured a Reserve
and attended a professional Lacrosse
game. Students also visited a
traditional style Longhouse and
learned how First Nations people
treat Moose skin in order to make
Moccasins, belts and various other
items. Overall the experience was a
very meaningful one for students and
teachers alike. Many who attended
the trip spoke of having a renewed
sense of respect for other peoples’
faith, traditions and cultures.

Macbeth English Trip
On April 28th the Gr. 11
English classes of Mr.
Yan, Ms. Gregori and
Ms. Kitunen attended
the live showing of the
William Shakespeare
play Macbeth. The play
w a s a m o d e r n
adaptation “meta’ play,
(like the recent avante-
garde plays of Mr.
Paul), where the actors
were cursed by a
supernatural spirit, in the Paranormal film vein,
and could only exorcise the spirit if they enacted
the spirit’s wishes to put on the play, Macbeth.
After a short Q&A session after the play,
students went out to their favourite restaurants
and boarded the bus back home. Thanks to all
the teachers for organizing the trip and a special
thanks to Ms. Paralovos for paying the bills.
Laserquest
Our students this semester have certainly been
busy! The grade 9 applied English classes
worked on creating their own superheroes,
were able to present them to Mr. Middlemiss’s
grade 12 writer’s craft class and in turn those
students wrote stories based on the grade 9’s
creations. In addition to looking at what makes
a hero and learning about the hero’s journey in
literature, students also studied short stories and
mythology – with a particular focus on the myth
of “Theseus and the Minotaur”. As a result,
students were able to explore a variety of mazes
in literature and other forms of media. To
complete our unit, the grade 9 applied students
and my literacy class attended a fun-filled day of
learning and laser tag at Brampton’s Laser Quest
along with Ms. Smith’s and Mr. McDonald’s
A.C.C.E.S.S. class. Students had the opportunity
to experience the frustration and excitement
involved in being trapped in a maze with
nothing but your own device to keep you safe.
Allies were formed, traitors were discovered and
ultimately there was only one winner for each
game. Students also had the opportunity to
learn about how mazes were first introduced in
history and where they are seen all over the
world – in an educational setting separate from
the maze itself. The trip was so successful, that
Mr. Reid’s ESL students also joined in on the
Laser Quest fun! They also organized a trip to
Laser Quest and were able to enjoy the maze
experience. Overall this semester has been a
great success. Wishing you all a wonderful and
restful summer!

Moderns Department
As Semester 2 draws to an end, the Moderns department wishes to
congratulate students on a successful semester. We hope that all students
may consider pursuing French beyond the compulsory grade 9 credit, as
French language courses are offered through to grade 12. Students who
complete all 4 years of French will be presented with a certificate of
completion upon graduating. Students who enjoy language learning are
reminded that French as a Second Language and any international language
are accepted as a group 1, 2 or 3 credit towards graduation.
We would also like to congratulate the following students who represented
St. Marguerite d’Youville in Le concours d’art oratoire (a board-wide
French Speeches Competition) this past March. In the Core French category Kristina Gorospe (Grade
11) spoke about La gratitude; Precious Nwaka (Grade 10) spoke about Le futur vraisemblable. In the
French Immersion category, Mahnoor Akram (Grade 10) spoke about Rire: c’est bon pour la santé.
We would like to thank the girls for the countless hours spent writing and practicing their speeches to
prepare for this competition. Special congratulations go out to Precious for placing second in the
Grade 9 & 10 Core French category for her speech. Félicitations les filles!
On Thursday April 7th the Grade 11 and 12 French language students had a unique opportunity to
attend a private screening of Le petit prince (The Little Prince) based on the novel with the same title
from author Antoine de St. Exupéry. The movie covered many of the themes and life lessons that the
senior French students read, analyse and discuss. The students thoroughly enjoyed the movie and we
look forward to next year’s French excursion.

21st Century Learning:
Incorporating Educational Apps
into the Classroom
This semester students in Mr. Gumulka, Ms. Ceci
and Mrs. Pantaleo’s classes were specially
trained by the DPCDSB technology itinerant,
Clementine D’Souza, on the use of iPads for the
classroom. Students began the project by using
the career planning website, myBlueprint.ca, to
complete a series of online surveys targeting
their possible career choices. Next, the focus
shifted to becoming familiar with the iPads and
using the various educational apps such as
Mindomo and Explain Everything. Students
then incorporated the apps into their pathway
planning based CPTs. At the end of the training
students presented their new electronic skills to
Mrs. D’Souza and their teachers. All of their
work in progress was shared with teachers via
the “DP Cloud”, where students were able to
get one on one help from teachers and peer
support using the Class Notebook feature and
Microsoft messaging apps!
Department News
This year every
program in the
Academic Resource
Department actively
engaged with a 21st
c en tu ry g rowth
mindset and explored
many new forms of
t e chno logy and
resources. Teachers
a n d s t u d e n t s
collaborated to utilize
these programs and
embedded it into their daily work day. Our
students were also heavily involved in
community building experiences and connecting
to nature and instrumental in beautifying the
entrance of our school.
Our Planning for Independence class had a
wonderful semester learning about what plants
need to grow, tending to their mini gardens and
contributed to the beautification of the front
flowerbeds with help from our Head Custodian,
Mr. Bogle. The students also created vibrant
artistic projects led by PAMA, to give to their
parents in May & June. They continue to enjoy
the outdoors, practice their faith, charity and
serve the school by helping office staff,
hospitality and teachers with laminating,
recycling, laundry and attendance. In mid-May,
students competed for 2 days at the PIP Track &
Field event at St. Marcellinus. At this event we
were able to meet and introduce ourselves to
the new Director of Education, Ms. Mazzorato.
This year we say good bye to four members of
our class - 3 will be graduating after 7 years in
the P.I.P. program and one will be joining the
Notre Dame community in September. We wish
them all the best and hope to see them at our
Fall Family Night!
The A.S.D. Program welcomed the Grade 8
students who will entering the program in
September. A Parent Information Night, held on
June 2, was well attended and provided parents
with additional information to assist in the
transition process. We are proud of one of our
students who represented St. Marguerite
d’Youville CSS at the 2016 National Geography
Challenge in Ottawa. We also hosted an
evening in February about the Vulnerable
Person’s Registry in association with Peel
Regional Police. It was well received so we plan
to organize another information night in the
fall.
Our Gr. 10 GLE students participated in a pilot
project using IPads to explore new interactive
apps that enhanced their learning strategies and
communications with their teachers and peers.
Grade 10 ARD students prepared for the OSSLT
by attending training sessions and specialized
modules to learn strategies and programs to
provide additional support to write this year’s
Literacy test. We would especially like to thank
Ms. C. D’Souza from the Board for supporting
our students with the OSSLT and teaching our
staff and students valuable strategies and skills.
We wish all the students a good result and
celebrate their efforts and dedication to
improve their skills.
The Resource Room continues to be accessed
every period to assist students with
tests and assignments. Most of our
students on an Individual Education
Plan (IEP) have made arrangements
with their teachers to write their
exams in the Resource Room and
some will be using assistive
technology. We hope they continue
to practice effective studying
strategies and stay calm and focused
during their exams. Good luck!
Lastly, we would like to thank Mr.
Greco for supporting the Academic
Resource staff, students and programs
while at St. Marguerite d’Youville CSS
and wish him all the best at St.
Francis Xavier CSS!
On behalf of the Academic Resource
Department, we wish everyone, staff
and students, a very restful and safe
summer!

THE PANTHER’S PLAYHOUSE • TIFF • SOULPEPPER
For the last time this year… greetings from
d’Youville Drama! Semester two was a busy
one at The Panther’s Playhouse - here’s what’s
happening…
Drama Classes
As I write this, all Drama students are putting
the finishing touches on their CPT
performances. The grade 9 & 10 classes are
working on their anthology performances that
incorporate tableau, mime, dialogue and
monologues. The Film/Video students are
working on their final film, a behind-the-scenes
look at the lives of Drama students. On
Tuesday, June 7th, the red carpet was rolled
out once again for the talented actors/directors
at d’Youville Drama’s 3rd Short Film Festival
in The Panther’s Playhouse. Audiences were
delighted with class productions from the
semester, which included silent films, soap
opera scenes, and spine-tingling tales from the
horror genre. The course was a great success
and we hope to continue next year with our
fourth class for new and upcoming talent.
Field Trips
On Tuesday, May 24th, the Drama - Film/
Video students travelled to downtown
Toronto for a day at the TIFF Bell Lightbox,
the very place where the annual international
film festival is held. Students were given a
tour of the facility and took in a screening of
the classic Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds.
Afterwards, they enjoyed a little shopping at
The Eaton Centre. But it wasn’t all a frivolous
jaunt in the big city. Students were also given
the task of shooting a short film on their cell
phones while on the field trip. The result was
screened at the Short Film Festival, featuring
some of the most creative work to grace our
big screen.
On Wednesday, May 25th (yes, just a day
after our last trip!) Drama students took the
journey back to our favourite theatre at the
Young Centre for the Performing Arts to see
Soulpepper Theatre’s latest production, The
Odd Couple, Neil Simon’s classic comedy
about two middle-aged men dealing with life
after divorce. The performance was a hilarious
comedy that had the audience in stitches. It
was a wonderful day we will never forget.
Extra-curricular News
We hope that you got a chance to see this
year’s spring production - it was Ridiculous!!
That’s not just a description - it’s also the title
of the show! The dramatic comedy told the
story of three sisters and their parents who
learn that you should be careful what you
wish for. We would like to thank the actors
and crew for a magical performance. Many
thanks go out to everyone involved, especially
to Mr. McMullen for building a mind-blowing
set, Ms. Monticiollo and her students for the
fantastic food, Mrs. Guccione and her crew for
the incredible hair and make-up (shout-out to
the Man of Her Dreams), and Mr. Gumulka
for being an invaluable member of our crew.
With heavy hearts, we bid a fond farewell to
our graduate actors and crew members, and
we wish them the best in the years to come.
We look forward to welcoming the many new
and talented students to our Drama
community next year.
We would like to acknowledge our staff,
custodians, administration, and parents for
their continuing support of the performing arts
at our school. This was a busy, yet inspiring
year for us at d’Youville Drama, and we hope
to continue to challenge ourselves artistically
in the year ahead. Come see a play or
perhaps a film in The Panther’s Playhouse next
year. Join our crew backstage, or get on it as
an actor. For now, enjoy the summer, and
enrich your lives with the arts - take in a
blockbuster film, a concert, or perhaps, a play.
The world is your stage…
Be safe and God bless.

d’Youville Student makes Top
20 in the Canadian National
Geographic Challenge
St. Marguerite d’Youville’s grade 9 student,
A.J. Cava, participated in the Canadian
National Geographic Challenge. Over thirty
thousand students across Canada, from grades
7 – 10 competed in this year’s challenge. A.J.
qualified as one of the top 20 students in
Canada to compete at the final championships
during the first week of June in Ottawa. It was
a three day event which involved intense
testing of geographic knowledge over a series
of three rounds. The first round included a
written test in the University of Ottawa, while
round 2, consisted of field work on Victoria
Island. The final round, held in the Barney
Danson Theatre in the Canadian War
Museum, took the form of a “Jeopardy style”
competition.
Not only were the top 20 engaged in a series
of geographic challenges, but they also took
part in a private tour of the Parliament
building, Supreme Court of Canada, The
Canadian War Museum and of course, what
tour would not be complete without an
excursion around the city of Ottawa!
Congratulations goes out to A.J. Cava for his
hard work and efforts throughout this year’s
Geographic Challenge! A special thanks goes
out to Mrs. Cotroneo and Ms. Ruszkowski for
making this year’s Geographic Challenge a
success!

OFSAA Track
S t . M a r g ue r i t e
d’Youville took the
track and Field world by storm
this season led by our team
MVP’s Jermeka Castello and
Brandon Letts. With a small
team of very elite runners,
jumpers and throwers our
athletes consistently finished
with multiple medals around
their necks. Incredible
showings at ROPSSAA and
South Regionals allowed d’Y
to bring 11 athletes to the
provincial finals, taking home a total of 6 medals. With our
OFSAA medal count at 6, we led all other Peel Region
schools at the prestigious University of Windsor Track and
Field Stadium. Several d’Y trackletes will be attending post-
secondary schools across North America next year competing
at the highest levels against stiff competition. We wish them
all the best from the St. Marguerite d’Youville community.

PAWS d’YOU THINK • GRADE 9 • STOPR
On Friday May 6th we had our 4
th annual “PAWS d’You Think You
Can High school?” grade 8 transition day. Our leaders met all 5
elementary feeder schools at the Brampton Soccer Centre. Link
Leaders delivered activities that were fun and informative - provid-
ing grade 8s the opportunity to get a glimpse into high school life.
Leaders provided strategies that teach students how to be successful
in high school. It also gave the grade 8 students a chance to meet
the Link Leaders who will be supporting them in their grade 9
year.
We also have had great success with our peer-mentorship program.
Students developed meaningful relationships and we hope these
will continue to flourish into the next school year!
We'd like to thank all the grade 9 teachers who volunteered their
time and provided support to the program and leaders over the
past year. Thank you to the Administration Team for always sup-
porting our endeavors to build successful young individuals.
Our Link Crew Leaders pledge to continue to be positive role
models in the d’Y community. We look forward to the many
