  • Principle of NDIR CO2 sensors

    The NDIR(Non-Dispersive Infrared) utilizes the phenomenon that a gas

    The amount of absorbed IR light is proportional to the concentration.For example, H2O has the maximum absorbance at 1.4 and 1.9㎛, SO2 at 4.0㎛, CO2 at 4.3㎛, NO at 5.3㎛.

    An IR source at the end of the measurement chamber emits light into

    light at its characteristic wavelength.

    The filter converts the amount of absorption into electric signals. The IR detector measures the strength of the signal that passes through.

    Differences between NDIR Single and Dual Wavelength type

    Single Wavelength Type has one detector, so it shows largererrors than Dual Wavelength type senosrs as time passes.

    Although this type can be applied with calibratable instrumentswhich measures the gas concentration using standard gas, CO2 sensors with Single type are not suitable to measure and control indoor air quality.

    It has two parts unlike the single type. The one measures the amount of infrared light which depends on carbon dioxide level.The other part “Reference” measures the amount of infraredlight which is not affected by any gases.

    The Reference plays a role of a calibrator to the changes in external conditions and it makes the sensor very stable for a long time without manual calibration.

    Sensors with dual type have excellent stability, both in terms of time and temperature. The Dual wavelength type is broadlyused for complying with IAQ.
