THE ONE CAMPAIGN INFORMATION
MEETING
Assessing the Bethany Church One Campaign’s Adherence to the
Principles of War
PRINCIPLES OF WAR • The fundamental principles
considered in the conduct of [military] campaigns.
• Ignoring or violating them invites risk of defeat and failure.
• The principles are applicable to non-military campaigns such as our One Campaign
PRINCIPLES OF WAR • Objective
• Offensive
• Mass
• Economy of Force
• Maneuver
• Unity of Command
• Security
• Surprise
• Simplicity
OBJECTIVE • Definition: Direct every military
operation toward a clearly defined, decisive and attainable objective.
EXAMPLES OF OBJECTIVE • Historical Example: ETO; “enter the
continent of Europe and . . . undertake operations aimed at the heart of Germany and the destruction of her armed forces.”
• Biblical Example: Joshua; Take the Promised Land
• One Campaign: • The Great Commission; “Therefore,
go and make disciples. . .” Matthew 28
• Intermediate objective: Establish church in Kittery Point
OFFENSIVE • Definition: Seize, retain, and
exploit the initiative. Offensive action is the most effective and decisive way to attain a clearly defined common objective.
EXAMPLES OF OFFENSIVE • Historical Example: Trenton
• Biblical Example: Crossing the Jordan and taking the Promised Land
• One Campaign: Do not remain in “holy huddle”. “Be strong and courageous” and expand the Kingdom in our area of influence
MASS
• Definition: Mass the effects of overwhelming combat power at the decisive place and time.
EXAMPLES OF MASS
• Historical Example: D-Day; combined the total efforts of all allied countries, and all services, into one overpowering effort
• Biblical Example: David’s campaigns against the Syrians, Philistines, and Moabites (2 Sam; 1 Chronicles)
• One Campaign: We are mobilizing all the assets of the Bethany Family in a singular effort to accomplish the objective.
ECONOMY OF FORCE • Definition: Employ all combat
power available in the most effective way possible; allocate minimum essential combat power to secondary efforts
EXAMPLES OF ECONOMY OF FORCE • Historical Example: MacArthur’s
Pacific campaign
• Biblical Example: Gideon; from 32,000 to 300!
• One Campaign: While massing our resources, we have been careful to maintain support for ministries at Greenland and Raymond.
MANEUVER • Definition: Place the enemy in a
position of disadvantage through the flexible application of combat power.
EXAMPLES OF MANEUVER • Historical Example: Desert Storm;
Schwarzkopf’s “Great Wheel” through the Saudi desert
• Biblical Example: The Second Battle of Ai; the feint with 3000 and rapid movement of the 30,000
• One Campaign: Keeping our enemy off balance, we are maneuvering north to establish another outpost for the Kingdom
UNITY OF COMMAND • Definition: For every objective,
seek unity of command and unity of effort.
EXAMPLES OF UNITY OF COMMAND • Historical Example: ETO (Allied
Forces all under Eisenhower)
• Biblical Example: Israelite response to Joshua: “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go.”
• One Campaign: We have one Lord, Savior, and leader; He has placed Pastor Bruce in this leadership position to accomplish His objectives. We are all united under him.
SECURITY • Definition: Never permit the
enemy to acquire unexpected advantage.
EXAMPLES OF SECURITY • Historical Example: Korean War;
Chinese intervention
• Biblical Example: Nehemiah; “ half of my men did the work, while the other half were equipped with spears, shields, bows and armor. . . from the first light of dawn till the stars came out.”
• One Campaign: There is always some risk when taking the offensive. We have, and will, cover this operation in prayer and be ever watchful for the unexpected.
SURPRISE • Definition: Strike the enemy at a
time or place or in a manner for which he is unprepared.
EXAMPLES OF SURPRISE • Historical Example: Inchon landing,
Korea
• Biblical Example: Joshua’s defeat of the Northern Kings; the night attack against a superior enemy
• One Campaign: In a region where few attend church, and where philanthropy is at its lowest, the Bethany family is committed to the counter-intuitive decision to advance rather than tarry.
SIMPLICITY
• Definition: Prepare clear, uncomplicated plans and concise orders to ensure thorough understanding.
EXAMPLES OF SIMPLICITY
• Historical Example: Grant’s Adjutant test
• Biblical Examples: The Great Commandment; the Great Commission
• One Campaign: Our goals are simple; open a church and pay off debt.
SUMMARY • Encouraged that One Campaign plans are consistent with the
Principles of War. Bodes well for its success, but . . .
• Actual success depends on the continued generosity of the Bethany Family.

QUESTION #1: Why isn’t one of the campaign goals to raise money for Raymond?
• Needs at Raymond, Greenland, and other ministries were considered by the elders and the campaign team.
• Lesson learned from Extraordinary Campaign was that we had too many goals which dissipated the use of donations and led to underfunded goals.
• One principal of war is to simplify; having one primary goal was our way of massing our resources on the most important objective, getting the Kittery Church renovated and operational as soon as possible.
• Debt reduction/elimination was added only after much discussion because, if successful, it releases additional money to fund future projects in Greenland and Raymond.
• In meantime, both churches are planning to identify the challenges and the responses to needs on each campuse and will submit them during the next budget cycle.
QUESTION #2: Isn’t the Kittery Point project depriving Raymond of Ali’s services? • Ali has stated that, at this time, she is confident that she has
successfully met her responsibilities at both campuses.
• Church leadership at Greenland and Raymond, and the One Campaign Team, will continue to monitor the situation. Changes will be made if necessary.
QUESTION #3: Why should the Raymond congregation concern itself with a church in Kittery Point?
• We are one church with several campuses. We embrace Unity of Command and Unity of Effort.
• Just as the congregation at Bethany gave selflessly to raise the church in Raymond, so our two existing churches should do likewise for Kittery Point.
• The men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh left their “Promised Land” to help their brother tribes gain their inheritance. Those of us in already established churches need to do the same for those who will make disciples in Kittery Point.
• Similar to Revolutionary War when patriots from south states rallied to support the New Englanders against Gen Howe. One for all, all for one.
QUESTION #4: What did it cost to prepare the Raymond Church for operations?
• As stated in the FAQ, the cost was about $650,000. • This cost figure includes the cost of renovation and new work, the inherited
debt, and ministry efforts in the Raymond area.
• This amount has been confirmed in a review of church financial records.
• It has also been confirmed in documents retained by the Building Committee which dispersed the funds at the time.
• The renovation comparison between Raymond and Kittery Point was included to inform congregants that the costs will be similar.
QUESTION #5: Did the Elders consider other options besides renovation?
• The Elders considered the following options: • Tear down and build new. • Sell and use proceeds to build elsewhere. • Renovate
• The Kittery Point church building has been carefully and thoroughly evaluated by several general and sub-contractors to determine the scope of work necessary to renovate, modernize and to bring the building into compliance.
• After carefully weighing the costs of the options and the time it would take to implement them, the Elders voted to acquire the property and renovate and modernize the existing structure.
