WMO secretary-general Petteri Taalas explains how governance reform will create a more agile organization for tackling 21st century issues

PURPO SEFIT FOR WHAT EXACTLY DOES THE WMO
MEAN BY GOVERNANCE REFORM?WMO is a member-driven specialized United Nations [UN] agency, which delivers concrete services. WMO coordinates a standardized global weather, climate, water and environment-related observing system, which is the backbone of weather, climate and hydrological services, and the monitoring of greenhouse gases and air pollutants.
The ancestor of WMO, the International Meteorological Organization (IMO), originated from the 1873 Vienna International Meteorological Congress. A large part of the work of WMO is carried out in technical commissions, programs and dozens of expert groups. Many of those have existed for decades and their number has grown over time, leading to dispersed and silo working structures.
The WMO reform aims to optimize WMO resources to respond with agility to the future challenges of members, as well as those of related operational, scientific and private-sector organizations. Besides the free exchange of WMO Global Observing System data, WMO serves as a platform for exchange of know-how between its members. The organization also facilitates capacity development and related resourcing.
