Few things are cheerier than pink walls. Pink isn't shy. Pink isn't prudish. Pink is full on fun. I've learned to embrace my love of the color without restraint and I'm loving it most in the form of wallpaper.

Yes, you could line the inside of your closet with the goodness of a pink brocade paper. You could also deck out your guest bath in a grand trellis in a rosy shade of pink. But what about a master bedroom bedecked in festive pink floral? What about a dining room showcasing a meandering gold vine on a peony-hued ground?

Are you that bold? I believe you are. I also believe this happy hue need not be relegated to small rooms or hidden alcoves. Pink done right it is sophisticated and undeniably chic... just like you.

Today's attractive, natural wallcoverings can be an incentive to homebuyers, not a turn-off

There was a time when home stagers and real estate agents would grimace when they saw a house full of wallcoverings. Home sellers faced two major problems. First, some of the patterns and colors of wallcoverings were atrocious and a real turnoff to any potential buyers. Second, buyers worried about how they would ever get the hideous stuff off the walls. We won't say that all of today's wallcovering is sophisticated and beautiful. But consumers are more educated than ever before and technology has made wallcoverings easier to use and remove. And the use of natural materials, including bamboo, cork, mica chips and magnolia leaves, appeals to a new type

of consumer who wants to connect to nature.Gary Levine is owner of U.S. Wallcovering in North Olmsted, a company that was founded in 1905. Levine said consumers are seeing natural material wallcoverings on HGTV, at home shows and in model homes, and they like the textures and concept."We are selling a huge amount of grasscloth, even though there has been a recent 50 percent price increase," said Levine, who emphasized this is not your grandmother's boring dining room grasscloth. "We have to assume the dry spell in Japan has affected the growing and the price. It was about $30 a roll,

Natural material wallcoverings, including grasscloth, are now very popular and a bonus to some homebuyers

now it can be $100."Despite the cost, grasscloth is something consumers and many homebuyers like. Levine also sells cork wallcovering and mica (a vermiculite natural stone) infused wallcovering, but the not so much of the latter as it is more difficult to install, he claimed.U.S. Wallcovering carries selections from the Designer Resources Grasscloth and Natural Wallpaper collection by Ronald Redding Designs for York Wallcoverings. If not in stock, selections can be ordered, including coverings with banana fibers and organic capiz shells, also known as windowpane oysters because of their translucent quality. The woven capiz wallcovering is from the Modern Luxe Collection by Candice Olson for York Wallcoverings. A majority of Levine's natural material wallcoverings is neutral tones, including off-whites and beige. But colors including red, green, and blue can

be ordered. "People really like anything with a glittery look, too," said Levine. To achieve that appearance, York Wallcoverings craftsmen infuse the natural products with "metallic threads, shimmering inks, and mylar and pearlesent shell."The big question is, however, can this wallcovering be cleaned?"We used to send people to lamp stores to get a product used to clean lamp shades. It works on this kind of wallpaper," said Levine. "Now we carry the product ourselves. The wallcovering is easy to clean with a dry cleaning sponge."Levine said consumers were also worried about "the stripability of wallcovering." But new adhesives have made that far less of a problem. If consumers prime walls correctly and follow the manufacturer's directions, there should be no problem, he said.

Wall Art: Use Bold Wallpaper Patterns to Brighten up a RoomTreat wallpaper like art with these tips from York Wall Coverings

Still stuck on the notion that wallpaper is forever? Try big patterns in small doses. Rev up a powder room with a powerful print, highlight an accent wall with a striking pattern, or create a sense of surprise inside a closet.

Those who aren’t comfortable with commitment can treat wallpaper like art. The bold pattern pictured here, Pucker Up Buttercup from Ashford House, is made in Pennsylvania by York Wallcoverings. The interpretation is an easy DIY project. The paper is mounted on artist’s board and framed with decorative molding to make a statement that will stop people in their tracks. Even better, the whole setup is completely mobile.

“It’s quick, easy, adds a little zest to an otherwise boring wallscape, and gives people the confidence to try a bigger project someday,” says Gina Shaw, vice president of product development at York. “What a chic way to use a cheeky pattern.”

Pre-pasted, wash able and strippable, it also comes in light gold and pink on white, and brown and fuchsia on metallic gold. The suggested retail price is $43 per single roll (sold in double rolls only). To find a Main Line retail or design outlet, visit www.yorkwall.com

In-Laws Coming? Decorating Tricks, Quick!

Q: I'm embarrassed to ask this question (don't print my name!): What's the quickest way to fill up a room? We've just moved into our first house-house, and my in-laws (who helped us afford it) are coming East to visit for Thanksgiving. We both work, so there's not much time for shopping. I want things to be as cozy as possible — quick!

A: If they are right-thinking in-laws, they'll get the picture. If not, write a welcome letter — even an email — in advance, pointing out your future plans for your new home.

Future, just not by Thanksgiving, plans, remind them.

You might even risk asking for their ideas and suggestions. Suggestions, not dictates.

Relax — by the next visit, they probably won't even remember.

Meanwhile, there are things you can accomplish in precious little time. Color fills a room like nothing else. And painting takes a scant weekend; half a weekend if you only paint two walls, a design trick the pros often evoke to make a room feel "decorated."

Whatever furniture you do have, club it together into cozy seating groups: For example, sofa in the middle with a low table in front, flanked by two or three chairs. Even if the table is temporary — say, a board balanced on a basket — and the chairs came in from the lawn, such a gathering always says "home."

Be sure to add lamps. Light only from above feels like Wal-Mart, pressing down

and making sad shadows. Perch table lamps on packing boxes, if you must, or hang a fixture from the ceiling. The idea is to form a warm circle of light where people gather.

In the dining room, bring out the candles, lots and lots of candles.

Also, mind the floors. Long, gleaming expanses of hardwood or tile can look and feel chilly. You can lay a room-sized rug in half an afternoon, which will not only make the space look dressed and feel warmer, it will help absorb those lonesome echoes you get in half-empty rooms.

Speaking of empty, get busy filling any shelves with books, tchotchkes, potted plants, photographs (got any of your in-laws?).

Don't have shelves? There's an instant solution, thanks to York Wallcoverings. The books so casually arranged on the

shelves we show here are all faux. Ditto the shelves themselves: York's two-panel trompe l'oeil Bookshelf Mural is a witty way to impressing the in-laws' with your extensive home "library" ("American Classics" collection, yorkwall.com).

Q: We have a chance to buy two big handmade clay pots. My cousin had them shipped from a village in Italy. She says they are made of something called Impruneta clay. I'm wondering if they'd be safe outside on our front steps.

A: Yes, and on your children's front steps, and maybe your grandchildren's, too. Clay from Impruneta, a small village in Tuscany, has been prized since the Middle Ages for pots and tiles, some of which have been around almost that long. Your cousin's pots may be younger — shops like Restoration Hardware now bring them to the U.S.

8 Ways to Revamp the Kitchen

A full kitchen redo is not for everyone. When you live in an apartment, it is sometimes necessary to resort to tricks to give our room a dapper look. Here are 8 tips in all price ranges that will help you to refresh your kitchen.

REPAINT CABINETSThis is one of the oldest remedies for hiding cabinets whose style is outdated or to hide imperfections that never cease to irritate the eye. They are now on the market for specialty paints that wash a cloth shot. You can opt for a glossy or matte finish.

CHANGE THE HANDLES Do not be afraid to change your old grips for something more contemporary. If you do not want to drill holes, pay attention to the dimensions!

ADD MORE LIGHT UNDER CABINETSAdd light under cabinets is easier than ever. One can opt for strips of LED lights or stickers models that can be removed easily.

SET WALLPAPER IN CABINETSLine the cabinets in a colorful wallpaper. This is a simple way to add a touch of fantasy to a kitchen that is sorely lacking. Choose a product with [plastic] finish that will stand the best up-and-coming plates and glasses.

CHANGE THE BACKSPLASHRepaint the backsplash in a surprising color to hide a shabby wall without repainting the kitchen in full. Also found in hardware stores false pre-glued tiles that can do wonders.

O TEZ DOORSThis solution is not for everyone, given the dishes and glasses need be in order as they are exposed to all eyes. But if you like the Scandinavian kitchens or those of bohemian look, think about it.CHOOSE PAINTIt's magic! Paint a wall around the island or within the paintings doors. You can change the mood of the kitchen every day by adding a sentence, a thought or drawing.

LIGHT OVER THE TABLEChange the light fixture over the table, choose a model up to date and locate the dimmer to be able to modulate the atmosphere.

Retro designs from the childhood of baby boomers are ‘in’ again

Danish club chairs. Flying saucer lamps. Pop-art wallpaper. If you were born after the baby-boomer era, you probably didn’t grow up with mid-century modern furnishings. But this once-prevalent style from the 1950s and ’60s is more popular than ever and being embraced by a whole new generation of consumers.

Historically, mid-century modern design became popular after World War II, when a weak economy forced consumers to downsize and simplify their lives. This led to furnishings with clean, geometric lines, minimalistic construction and multi-purpose functionality. The furnishings often featured sleek materials, nubby or high-gloss textures and high-intensity colors like avocado, mustard and citrus orange.

While mid-century modern design has enjoyed waves of popularity ever since, none compares to its current status. As the economy is slowly but surely climbing, so, too, is the demand for these furnishings.

Lance Stephenson, founder and maker of Spiral Cone Legs furnishing accessories, notes that mid-century modern for many consumers denotes quality.“As the-mid-

century modern era was drawing to a close in the 1970s, we found ourselves on a downward slope in manufacturing. While it should have been a robust beginning to thoughtful furnishings, a trough followed in which there was a decline in quality,” Stephenson says. “So it makes sense for us to look to mid-century modern for inspiration. It represents a peak in well-made design. With mid-century modern furnishings, there’s no façade hiding poor workmanship. What you see is what you get."

Stephenson adds that manufacturing something with the goal of making it highly functional will almost always make it beautiful, too, as mid-century modern demonstrates so well.

“The goal of designers of that era was to create something that efficiently did the job with the least amount of materials. Functionality was the goal, but their creations were also things of beauty and elegance," Stephenson states. Thankfully, we’re starting to see this dualism again in manufacturing, he adds, noting that both the supply and demand of quality goods are on the rise.

Because they’re so well made, original mid-century modern furnishings can be found in excellent condition second-hand. There also is growing demand for new products that reflect mid-century modern characteristics.

Repurposed or new, mid-century modern today has developed into a “classic” style, much like Early American and Country French designs, says Jeff Dross, corporate director of education and industry trends at Kichler Lighting.

“While there is a portion of the population that was around when these designs were first created, the clever use of color, geometrics and foundations in hand-crafted work are now appealing to a new generation with a less tangible connection to the original,” Dross says. “Their cleverness is as fresh today to this new buyer as it was to the original consumer.”

Donna Frasca, a Charlotte, N.C., interior designer and blogger (decoratingbydonna.com), reports that the demand for mid-century modern design comes from clients of all ages.

“It’s from younger people who have enough money to invest in a furniture style that will be classic and timeless and one that they can build on over the years as their budgets allow,” Frasca says. Additionally, “Mid-century modern furniture is perfect for retired clients who are looking to downsize and just want a few classic pieces in their home to accommodate a smaller residence.”

Of course, not all customers know that their tastes have actually time-traveled.Stephenson concurs that his customers cross generational lines, but not everyone knows that his products are influenced by mid-century modern design. Spiral Cone Legs are an alternative to the traditional furniture leg that allow consumers to “update” the look of their sofas, tables and other furnishings. Each of the legs is hand-made from 1/4-inch steel round bar that is formed and welded into a sleek, spiraling cone and then sand-blasted and powder-coated for durability.

Older clients like the retro look of the legs; younger clients, the industrial vibe. “But many of our customers wouldn’t be able to tell you that Spiral Cone Legs are mid-century modern-influenced,” Stephenson says. “They just like the geometric styling and functionality—which just happens to be a mid-century modern hallmark.”

Design experts agree that mid-century modern furnishings offer something for nearly everyone and make a statement wherever they’re placed.

“A younger generation may want the fun, casual and colorful interpretations, and the more affluent may lean toward the graceful and luxurious details of the style,” suggests Gina Shaw, vice president of product development for York Wallcoverings.

“The great news is that the price points for wallpaper and other home décor products range from affordable to high-end,” Shaw continues, noting that many of York’s wallpapers are inspired and redesigned from archival pieces from the mid-century modern time frame. “This makes it work for everyone’s budget.”

Mid-Century Modern: Why Now?Besides the rebounding economy, one popular theory about why mid-century modern design has resurged is that stressed-out consumers are nostalgic for simpler times. They long for yesteryear and the furnishings that surrounded it—furnishings that could be found not only in American homes at the time but also on popular TV shows like “The Brady Bunch” and “Love American Style.”

Of course, mid-century modern design has made its way into present-day TV shows as well, which may be further fueling its resurgence, suggests Laura Holland, director of Marketing Services for Pearson Co., a licensed Heritage Home Group brand and maker of premium upholstered furniture.

“Mid-century looks have gained in popularity over the last few years, perhaps due to interest in TV shows such as ‘Mad Men,’ ” Holland says. Other popular period

TV shows include “Call the Midwife” and “L.A. Confidential,” which place mid-century modern décor into the homes of Americans each and every week.

The popularity of mid-century modern also follows on the heels of other recent home-fashion trends. This includes the trend for industrial design, which is a natural partner.

According to Frasca, the sturdy, utilitarian features of industrial design integrate well with sleek, classic furniture lines, “which makes mid-century modern furniture a perfect choice for the home.” Frasca reports that her annual trek to the High Point (Furniture) Market earlier this year confirmed the continuing presence of industrial styling, which suggests that mid-century modern will continue along with it. So, how can you integrate mid-century modern into your own home? Stephenson offers the following suggestions, which require little effort or expense.

(1) Try adding pop! to an accent wall with a bold geometric wallpaper or archival paint color.

(2) Go to thrift stores or estate sales to find period furniture and reupholster it if necessary.

(3) Look for vintage appliances—such as an aqua toaster or vintage Remington clock—to display as accent pieces.

(4) Update traditional furnishings by swapping out wooden legs or tabletops with metal ones. (Nothing says “mid-century modern” like a mix of materials.)

(5) Replace a lamp or two with the graceful lines of a mid-century modern fixture and top it with a tall lampshade.

(6) Most importantly, put what you love in your home, without trying to follow any one aesthetic. A passion for design, after all, is what mid-century modern was all about.

No Man Cave for Mr. My WayQ: OK, maybe I should hire a professional (as my friends keep telling me), but I know the look I want for my own digs: sharp, clean, sophisticated — the way I think I dress — and fit for a 27-year-old guy. What I do need is some ideas about color and lamps, and things like that.

A: OK (and I promise I won't tell your friends you asked), here's a picture that may be worth the proverbial thousand words. It's a bedroom in what was a traditional setting, that is, until a designer with a totally contemporary aesthetic fast-forwarded it, using haberdashery colors, masculine materials, and a tight rein on accessories.

Recast in a khaki-and-black color scheme, wainscoted in padded black leather, and distinguished by truly cool accessories (about which, more later), only the vintage mantelpiece, crown mouldings, and folding doors attest to the room's traditional heritage.

This is minimalism at its most masculine: sharp, clean, sophisticated. But there's plenty to look at: The carpet is subtly textured, the floor-to-ceiling silken draperies shine quietly in the light ... and speaking of light, the fixture hanging overhead is a real room-maker from the "little people collection" by multi-award-winning industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue.

A native of Cebu, the Philippines, who studied at Pratt Institute and founded the international consortium of artists known as "hive," Kenneth was just named Designer of the Year 2014 (at Maison et Objet, the French design show in Singapore). His are lights to see, as well as be seen by. Check them out at kennethcobonpue.com or designbyhive.com).

Q: My grandmother had grasscloth wallpaper. I always hated it - it was beige and looked, well, dead to me as a child! Now I find myself interested in adding some texture to the walls in our front entry hall.

It's narrow and I'm afraid a real pattern would be too much. What are my choices, besides grasscloth?

A: Good thinking. Texture adds dimension without demanding attention.

Good timing, too. Today's wallcoverings industry has been paying special attention to natural textures. Their latest report cites wallcoverings textured with bamboo and banana fibers, capiz shells and mica, even natural cork, and, yes, natural grasses, too, but these are definitely not your grandmother's grassclothes.

Inspired manufacturers like York Wallcoverings, (nee l895, the oldest and largest in the U.S.), infuses the natural materials with shimmering inks, metallic threads, Mylar, and pearlescent shells to give them what the York release calls "otherworldly allure." See for yourself at yorkwall.com.

Q: I want to show my children how to live an eco-friendly life at home. Besides, recycling, are there other easy — easy is key — dos and don'ts?

A: I'll let eco-savvy designer/author Robin Wilson (RobinWilsonHome.com) share a few tips:— Kick off your shoes at the door the way many Europeans do. It keeps the outside world from invading your home.

— Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter.

— Hang a nylon shower curtain liner — not vinyl — to limit mold and off-gassing.

— Clean every room in the house thoroughly — thoroughly!— once a year.

— Wash your pillows twice a year; replace them every three years.

— Change or clean your AC filter every 30-60 days.

New Patterns by Ronald Redding

York Wallcoverings has introduced new styles by Ronald Redding Designs that add a touch of glamour to textures and materials found in nature. Metallic Cork possesses a shimmery, bark-like appearance formed by a thin layer of painted and distressed cork that randomly reveals a metallic- finished ground behind it. Dyed and pressed sheets of crystalline mica are laminated onto nonwoven paper in Terra Mica. Natural Leaves, just as its name suggests, presents a field of foliage created by a process that eliminates the pulp of magnolia leaves while preserving their veins. Other designs include Petit Sisal, Flashy Woven, and Bamboo.yorkwall.com[Product Info: October 2014, # 206 ]
