P R I N T V S . W E BWhat you see on the monitor is not necessarily what you will see printed.

This is where the Pantone Swatch Books come in.

CMYK: Colors look to bright on the screen, but when printed, the blue-green color matches the version on the right. I used the Pantone Spot to Process Guide to get the accurate colors.

RGB: Because monitors use pixels to create color (RGB - Red, Green and Blue) the color build of this logo was different.

CMYK refers to the printing inks used in four-color process printing. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are the only four colors used to produce full-color photographs and designs. These colors can be combined and printed to emulate a wide number of other colors. If you look carefully at a printed color photograph in any magazine or book, you’ll see that it’s made up of rows of tiny dots of each of the four colors called a half-tone screen. The dots work together, at different angles, to fool your eye into seeing a full spectrum of colors.

In offset printing, a spot color is any color generated by an ink (pure or mixed) that is printed using a single run.

A popular color matching system used by the printing industry to print spot colors. Most applications that support color printing allow you to specify colors by indicating the Pantone name or number. This assures that you get the right color when the file is printed, even though the color may not look right when displayed on your monitor.

PMS works well for spot colors but not for process colors, which are generally specified using the CMYK color model.

P A N T O N E S W A T C H B O O KBecause monitors and printers display color differently, the Pantone swatch book gives both the printer

and designer an accurate and consistent reference.

The image to the left shows one Pantone swatch book. There are many version of these swatch books (as you will see in the InDesign color selection box). The same color number will appear differently on different coated papers. Therefore, Pantone create swatch books to show how the color will appear on Coated, Uncoated and Matte paper.

Additionally, some Pantone colors cannot be represented accurately using process color (CMYK). There is a swatch book that will show how any particular Pantone color will look when converted to CMYK.
