Gucci bids 13 million euros for historic Ginori

Tuscan ceramics producer filed bankruptcy in January (ANSA) - Florence, April 5 - Florentine fashion giant Gucci said on Friday that it has made a bid of 13 million euros for the trou-bled Tuscan ceramics producer Richard Ginori. Gucci said that its offer was "irrevocable" and came with a "long-term plan" to protect the historic tablewear company and save its employees. Ginori, like Gucci, is based in Tuscany. In January, a court in Florence declared the ceramics maker bankrupt, ending a lengthy struggle and eliminating more than 200 jobs.

Italian labor union CGIL said the news "opened an authentic industrial prospective for a historical Florentine company" and welcomed it as "good news".

Demand boosted by exports, from traditional and emerging markets 05 April, 15:05 (ANSA) - Florence, April 5 - Tuscan winemaker Marchesi de' Frescobaldi said it posted a 0.8% increase in sales in 2012 to 83.5 million euros compared to the previous year, ac-cording to data released by the company at Italy's most famous international wine exhibition, Vinitaly. Marchesi de' Frescobaldi said demand was boosted by exports both to traditional markets such as the US, Germany and Canada, as well as emerging markets like Russia, China and Japan. Demand from Italy suffered from the economic crisis, drop-ping 5.1% in 2011 compared with the earlier year.

Vatican museums recreate Etruscan tomb

with 3D techniques

Regolini Galassi of Cerveteri tomb discovered 200 years ago 04 April, 18:51 (ANSA) - Rome, April 4 - A 3D installation of the famous Regolini Galassi Etruscan tomb is showing visitors at the Vatican Museums what it would have been like to enter and soak in the atmosphere of an ancient aristo-cratic crypt. The installation projects the princess laid out on her funeral bed, embellished with jewels and precious garments and surrounded by objects from her rich dowry, in a 3D recreation of original Regolini Galassi tomb discovered 200 years in the town of Ceveteri and today inaccessible to the general public. The tomb was recreated as part of a European pro-ject aimed at experimenting with innovative techniques. The installation is housed in the Gregoriano Etrusco Museum, a few rooms down from the magnificent display of items originating from a 675-625 BC tomb.

Grilli predicts next year will see an improvement, with Italy's economy expand-

ing by 1.3%. That's slightly higher than a previous forecast of 1.1% growth in 2014. "There will be a return to positive growth between the end of this year and the beginning of the next," Padoan said.

charging stations

(ANSA) - Rome, March 27 - Two of Italy's largest energy companies say they are teaming up on devel-opment of better charging stations for electric cars. Eni and Enel say they fore-

see a time when a motorist can pull into an Eni service station and recharge, using electricity provided by Enel. On Wednesday the two signed a letter of intent to collaborate on a range of issues: strategic, techno-logical, logistical and commercial. Within six months, the plan is to have charging stations available in the northern Italian regions of Veneto and Emilia-Romagna. Motorists can plan to spend about 30 minutes recharging their electric vehicle while saving as much as 50% on the fuel bill, the compa-nies said.

'wise men' to tackle political deadlock

Experts asked to draft platform that can win cross-party backing

(ANSA) - Rome, March 31 - A group of 10 "wise men" appointed by President Giorgio Napolitano is set to try to tackle the political deadlock that

has gripped Italy since last month's inconclusive general election. Napolitano asked the experts to draft a programme of reforms for a govern-

ment that would be able to win cross-party backing, after conceding on Saturday that the three main parties in parliament were "frozen be-

tween irreconcilable stances". The head of state also said Saturday that he would serve until the end of his term on May 15.

There had been speculation Napolitano would step down, due to constitutional provisions that limit his powers in his final months of office and

prevent him dissolving parliament, in order to enable his successor to call snap elections to end an impasse, amid fears Italy could be plunged

back into financial crisis.

The panel is made up of five senior institutional figures - Enrico Giovannini, the head of statistics agency ISTAT, European Affairs Minister Enzo

Moavero Milanesi, Bank of Italy board member Salvatore Rossi, Constitutional Court President Valerio Onida and Competition Authority head

Giovanni Pitruzzella.

The others come from political parties.

They are former House speaker Luciano Violante of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD), Senator Gaetano Quagliariello of ex-premier Silvio

Berlusconi's People of Freedom (PdL) party, Mario Mauro of outgoing Premier Mario Monti's Civic Choice group, Northern League MP Giancarlo

Giorgetti and Filippo Bubbico, a PD Senator. A priority for the experts is likely to be a proposal to change Italy's much-criticised electoral law to

ensure it produces a clear winner next time. Napolitano has been criticised for not naming any women or young people among the experts.

Comedian-turned-politician Beppe Grillo's anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S), which holds the balance of power in parliament after

capturing a huge protest vote last month, has also complained about not having a representative. Napolitano turned to the "wise men" after

centre-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani told him Thursday that he had failed to win enough support from rival parties to be able to propose a gov-

ernment capable of winning a confidence vote in parliament.

Bersani's alliance came first in the election but failed to win a working majority in the Senate.

Berlusconi's centre-right coalition came a close second, with the M5S on its heels in third.

Democratic Party (PD) chief Bersani has rejected Berlusconi's calls for him to form a grand coalition with his People of Freedom (PdL) party.

But Bersani's attempts to win over the M5S with a programme that is in tune with many the movement's proposal policies have been returned

to sender with insults, which have including Grillo calling Bersani a "dead man talking".

The M5S's solution is for a government led by it.

VAT refunds for businesses in 2013 equal 11 billion euros

Italy's tax chief tells revenue service to speed up payments

(ANSA) - Rome, March 29 - Italy's tax service said Friday it would be paying out 11 billion euros to businesses in VAT refunds in 2013 and

instructed regional tax offices to speed up settlements.

In a letter, inland revenue chief Attilio Befera invited regional directors to "employ all available resources in the payment of refunds over

the next four months" in line with government directives to accelerate rebates in order to "provide tangible support to companies in

overcoming the difficult moment". In particular the idea is to relieve the burden on businesses having to make advance tax payments,

Befera said.

Italian businesses first to re-

ceive govt debt payback 40-billion-euro plan 'to jumpstart demand this year' says Grilli (ANSA) - Rome, March 28 - The Italian economy minis-

ter on Thursday said the government's decision to pay

back 40 billion euros in public debt will go to private-

sector companies before it goes to banks over the next

two years and will produce positive stimulus results by

mid-2013. In repaying government debt, the govern-

ment foresees "a chronological order in two phases:

first, non-financial institutions, then the banks," said

Vittorio Grilli before a special parliamentary committee.

"Injecting liquidity into the economy will jumpstart do-

mestic demand already by the middle of the year".

To meet all of its commitments, including social spend-

ing, the government announced plans last week to pay

back debt by 20 billion euros in 2013 and 20 billion eu-

ros in 2014, with the hope of a major stimulus for the

economy. The repayment plan had been fiercely criti-

cized by the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S)

of Beppe Grillo, which holds the balance of power in

parliament which remains divided after elections last

month produced no clear majority nor consensus to

compromise. On Thursday the populist M5S warmed to

the plan.

"We find it favorable that the banks must wait their

turn," said M5S House Whip Vito Crimi. Grilli also said

the 3% ceiling set for Italy's budget deficit in relation to

its GDP was "insurmountable" and would remain un-

changed. Relaxing its budget-deficit targets was made

possible after the European Commission (EC) in Brus-

sels gave Italy more flexibility in its national debt levels

despite a stability pact signed by nations including Italy

that fixed those debt levels.

The measure was intended to help companies facing a

credit crunch and recession. The outgoing government,

led by caretaker Premier Mario Monti, has raised its

deficit target for 2013 to 2.9% of gross domestic prod-

uct - a dramatic increase from its earlier target of 1.8%

of GDP.

It has also slashed its economic forecasts for 2013, pre-

dicting a 1.3% contraction, compared with an earlier

prediction of a 0.2% fall in GDP.

Iconic Warhol on show in Milan

From Campbell's Soup to Marilyn Monroe, by godfather of Pop Art 05 April, 18:21 (By Christopher Livesay) (ANSA) - Milano, April 5 - An exhibition on Andy Warhol's screen prints, from the famous Campbell's Soup cans to portraits of Marilyn Monroe, opened in Milan this week at the Museo del Novecento. En-titled 'Andy Warhol's Stardust', the show highlights the godfather of Pop Art during the 1970s and 80s with works from the corporate art collection of Bank of America Merrill Lynch. The exhibit features nearly 100 now iconic images of consumer goods, cartoon characters and portraits of thinkers and celebrities, such as Muhammad Ali, Albert Einstein and Gertrude Conversa-tions. Curated by Laura Calvi, Andy Warhol's Stardust is the museum's second collaboration with Bank of America Merrill Lynch, its main sponsor, following last year's photography exhibition 'Conversations'. "This unique and dynamic exhibition brings together a wonderful selection of Warhol's work, providing visitors with a glimpse into the work of one of the leaders of the Pop Art movement," said Rena De Sisto, global arts and cul-

ture executive at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. Through September 8, the museum's temporary exhibition space is featuring some of the artist's most significant fine prints, many of which were executed using diamond dust - hence 'stardust' in the show's title, which also refers to "Warhol's ability to create scintillating, immortal" images, curators say. Even the layout of the exhibit, which is arranged with prints along the walls like aisles in the supermarket, pays homage to Warhol's fetish for consumer-ism. The show is laid out chronologically, beginning with a series of famous prints created between the late 1960s and early '70s, including Campbell's Soup, Flowers, Sunset, and Grapes and Space Fruits, highlighting Warhol's mastery of serial production at his famous "Factory", where assistants made most of the objects before Warhol applied the finishing touches. The assem-bly-line technique - not so dissimilar from Flemish Baroque master Peter Paul Rubens and 18th-century Venetian master Canaletto - enabled him to create a huge output. "My philosophy is to make a painting a day", he once said. And so he did, from the beginning of the 70s, right through the 80s, when he rediscovered that the strength of his production lay specifically in portraiture. "His portraits are not documents of the present, they are icons awaiting their futures," wrote David Bourdon in 1975, commenting on depictions ranging from Ali and Monroe to Santa Claus and leading intellectuals of the day - all given equal footing in his art. On Saturdays and Sundays during April, May and June, guided tours and workshops will be available for chil-dren aged 6-12. The contemporary dance company Progetto D'Arte will pre-sent a series of workshops in the exhibition space to run alongside the show, engaging children and young people with Warhol's themes through perform-ance art. Further youth-oriented activities are scheduled later this summer. On the weekend of April 11-12, the Fondazione Cineteca Italiana, in collabo-ration with the Museo del Novecento, will screen a number of films by War-hol. Discounts are available to those who show a museum ticket stub.

AT A GLANCE

MARKET DAYS

The market usually opens by 8am and closes 1pm / 1.30pm

Pizzo : Thursday , off the top road in Pizzo

Vibo Valentia : Tuesday and Saturday, pedestrian high street and

back streets

Filadelfia : Thursday in the main Piazza

Lamezia : Saturday , by the train station

Vibo Marina : Monday , in the old station yard

Tropea: Saturday morning in the center

All the markets sell local home grown fruit and vegetables, wine,

cheeses, meats and breads.

Various clothing, household goods, knick knacks, ornaments and the

stuff you usually find at markets.

Visiting a market is always a great adventure, there is always a

bargin to be had. Don't forget, barter !!!

Italian Apple Jam 1. Wash apples, cut out any damaged parts, and cut into quarters. Leave the skins and cores as you want

the flavors from those, and they’ll take care of themselves later.

2. Put apples in a pot and cover with vinegar and water. Bring them to a boil, then reduce heat and let sim-

mer until they are soft enough to be put through a food mill. To test this, take out a piece, put it on a plate, and mash with a fork. If that happens easily, they are ready, but if there is resistance, let them cook some

more.

3. Remove apples from pot with slotted spoon and put in food mill for processing. My technique is to have an

empty bowl on the side for the apple remnants from the top of the food mill once it starts to gets messy and

crowded up there; save those remnants because you can run them through a few more times and get lots

more puree out of them. If you enjoy homemade applesauce, congratulations! You’ve just made some.

Once you’ve churned the apples down as much as you possibly can, you should end up with very little waste — and if you happen to have chickens, well they’re in for a treat that day.

The jar on the right was gone by the next evening.

4. Add 1/4 cup of sugar for each cup of puree (50 grams of sugar for each 300 grams of puree). Stir through

and then a pinch of salt and add spices. I say cloves are optional above because I’m personally not a huge

fan of cloves, but do feel free to play around with measurements and spices.

5. Taste and adjust.

6. Put puree in a wide, thick-bottomed pot (you don’t want this to burn, so the thicker the better) and sim-mer on low heat, stirring constantly. This takes between one and two hours, so do set aside the proper time.

7. To test if the apple butter is done, put a spoonful on a cold plate. You want the apple butter to remain

solid with no liquid seeping out.

8. Put apple butter in sterilized jars, top with sterilized lids, and boil for 10 minutes. Once they’re done, turn

off heat, take off lid, and just let the jars in there until they’re cooled off.

Ingredients:

4 lbs apples

1 cup apple cider vinegar

2 cups water

Sugar (measurements below)

Salt

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground cloves

(optional)

1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

WWW.ITALIANTAXES.COM Tourist takes finger from Florence statue

Pio Fedi's Rape of Polyxena object of repeated vandalism (ANSA) - Florence, March 29 - Florence cultural authorities on Friday moved to repair Pio Fedi's Rape of Polyxena in the Loggia dei Lanzi in the central Piazza della Signoria following the removal of a finger in the latest act of vandalism against the statue.

Alberto Casciani was called in to repair the statue after an English-speaking female tourist broke off the left index finger before being stopped by local municipal police. The same restorer was summoned to reat-tach the same finger following a similar

episode of vandalism in October 2012. ''All the fingers of the left hand are integrations, made necessary by re-peated removals and acts of vandalism,'' the Florence cultural authorities said in a statement. The 1865 statue depicting Achilles and Hector's sister during the Trojan War is some-times confused with

the nearby Rape of the Sabine Women (1579-1583), considered Ren-aissance sculptor Giambologna's masterpiece.
