Printing can also be defined as localized dyeing.

Defined as the application of dye or pigment ina different pattern on the fabric and by subsequentafter treatment of fixing the dye or pigment to get aparticular design.

Sometimes a printed fabric can be identified bylooking at the back side of fabric where there is nodesign or color as face side.

In cotton , dyes like vat , reactive are used.

In manmade , dyes like disperse and cationic used.4.

    DIFFERENT STYLES

OF PRINTINGThere are three basic approaches

to printing a color on fabric

    1 DIRECT PRINTING2 DISCHARGE PRINTING3 RESIST PRINTING

    5.

  • 8/10/2019 PRINTING NEW.ppt

    7/73

    DIRECT PRINTING

In this type of printing dye is applied ontothe fabric by carved block, stencil,Screen, engraved roller etc.

The dye is imprinted on the fabric inPaste form and any desired pattern mayBe produced

Example:- Block Printing , Roller Printing ,Screen Printing etc.

    6.

  • 8/10/2019 PRINTING NEW.ppt

    8/73

DISCHARGE PRINTING In this method the fabric is dyed and then

printed with a chemical that will destroythe color in designed areas.

Sometimes the base color is removed andanother color printed in its place.

    7.

    9/73

RESIST PRINTING In this method bleached fabric are printed

with a resist paste ( a resinous substancethat cannot be penetrated when the fabric

is immersed in a dye ) . The dye will only the parts that are not

covered by the resist paste. After the fabric has passed through a

subsequent dyeing process the resistpaste is removed , leaving a pattern

    on a dark background . 8.

BLOCK PRINTING It is the oldest and simplest way of

printing . In this method a wooden block with a

raised pattern on the surface was dipped

into the printing colorant and then pressedface down on to fabric . The desired pattern was obtained by

repeating the process using differentcolors . Generally the wooden block is carved out

of hand . Printing is done manually . 10.

    ROLLER PRINTING

It is the machine method of printing designson cloths by engraved rollers .

The design is engraved on the surface of ametal roller , to which dye is applied , andthe excess is scraped off the rollers surfaceleaving dye in the engraved sections . Whenit rolls across the fabric ,the dye on the rollertransfer to the fabric.

    Roller printing

    ADVANTAGES1. Large quantities of

    fabric at the rate of

914-3658m per hourcan be printed.2. Faulty joints or joint

    marks are absent.

    3. Fine sharp outlinesand good prints canbe obtained which isdifficult to get inblock printing.

    DISADVANTAGES1. Not economical for

    short run of fabrics.

    2. Difficult to produceblotch designs.

    3. Repeat of designlimited to the sizeof the rollers.

    4. Setup cost of rollerprinting m/c is high.

STENCIL PRINTING It is one of the oldest way of printing.

In it color is applied to the fabric by

brushing or spraying the interstices of apattern cut out from a flat sheet of metalor waterproof paper or plastic sheet orlaminated sheet.

A stencil is prepared by cutting out adesign from a flat sheet of paper , metal,or plastic.

    STENCIL PRINTINGADVANTAGES

    1.Simple and cost effective.

2.Stencil can be made rapidlyand can be used for smallorders.

    3.Color combination is good init.

    DISADVANTAGES

    1.Good design is difficultto obtain.

    2. Process is laborious.

    3.Not suitable for largescale production.

    SCREEN PRINTING

it involves the application of the printingpaste through a fine screen placed in contactwith the fabric to be printed.

A design is created in reverse on the screen byblocking areas of the screen with a materialsuch as an opaque paint.

The screen is placed over the fabric and theprinting paste is forced through the open areasof the screen using a flexible synthetic rubberor steel blade known as a squeegee.

used in a design.4.Sharp lines andfeatures easilyproduced.

    DISADVANTAGES1.For high production

    large no. of tablesrequired.

    2.Delicate shadingdifficult to obtain.

3.Screen cloggingmay be there in fineareas.

FLAT-SCREEN PRINTING It is the advanced version of screen printingby using automatic m/c to do work

It consists of printing table , conveyor belt,

number of screens , mechanism to print onthe fabric, etc.

First the fabric is brought on the printing

table through a feeding arrangement andit is gummed to the conveyor belt on thetable .

    26.

  • 8/10/2019 PRINTING NEW.ppt

    28/73

    Conveyor brings fabric periodically under

screen and stops while the screen arelowered on the required parts of the fabric . Printing paste is distributed throughout thefull length of the screen .

The squeeze is pressed to the screen . One or more strokes of the squeeze ensuresimultaneous printing of the pattern by thecommon action of all screens which appliesprinting paste as required by the color in thedesign .

    FLAT SCREEN PRINTING

    ADVANTAGES

    1. Greater production

than manual screenprinting2. Printing with different

    repeat can be made

    easily3. Good print is obtained

    DISADVANTAGES

    1. A big setup requiredfor more number ofscreens

    2. Prints with morecolors may not

be possible3. Printing paste notevenly controlled

    ROTARY SCREEN PRINTING

Rotary screen printing involves a series ofrevolving metal cylinder , each with revolvingscreens , each with a stationary squeegeeinside onto the fabric .

Twenty or more colors can be printed at thesame time .

The process is much quicker and moreefficient than flat screen printing .

    Transfer printing

It is a indirect method of printing in whichdyes are transferred from paper to athermoplastic fabric under controlled

conditions of temperature , time and pressure. The image is first engraved on a copper plate . Then pigment is applied on these plates . The image is then transferred to a piece of

paper , with a layer of glue applied . This is then placed on the fabric and heat

and pressure applied which fixes the printonto fabric . 30.

    35/73

BATIK PRINTING Originated on island of java and is a cottage

based industry. Batik is derived from word AMBATIK

The resist-dyeing process ,whereby designsare made with wax on a fabric which issubsequently immersed in a dye to absorb

the color on the unwaxed portions , is knownas batik printing . Special features is the finelines of color running irregularly across thefabric.

    TIE & DYE

  • 8/10/2019 PRINTING NEW.ppt

    38/73

    TIE & DYE

It is same as that of batik printing but herethe dye is resisted by knots that are tied inthe cloth before it is immersed in dye bath .

The outside of the knotted portion is dyed ,but inside is not penetrated if the knot isfirmly tied .

This gives a characteristic blurred or

    mottled effect.
