    SEWAGE

Sewage is a water!carried waste" in solution or suspension" tis intended to be removed from a community# $lso known asdomestic or municipal wastewater" it is more than %%& water

and is characteri'ed by volume or rate of (ow" physicalcondition" chemical and to)ic constituents" and its bacteriolog

status *which organisms it contains and in what +uantities,#

     SEWAGE TREATMENT PLAN

Structures and appurtenances which receivethe discharge of a sanitary drainage system

and which are designed to bring about a

reduction in the organic and bacterial contentof the waste so as to render it less o-ensiveor dangerous" e#g#" a septic tank or cesspool#

     WHY TREAT SEWAGE

$cross the world" there continues to be huge volumes ofwastewater pumped directly into rivers" streams and theocean itself# .he impact of this is severe – aside from thedamage to the marine environment and to /sheries it can

cause" it does little to preserve water#• Improving the environment through proper drainage

      and disposal of wastewater

    • Preventing (ood through removal of rainwater

    SCREENING

Screening is /rst stage of the wastewatertreatment process# Screening removes largeob4ects like" diapers" nappies" sanitaryitems" cotton buds" face wipes and evenbroken bottles" bottle tops" plastics and rags

that may block or damage e+uipment#Special e+uipment is also used to removegrit that gets washed into the sewer#

    PRIMARY TREATMENT

.his involve the separation of organic solid matter *orhuman waste, from the wastewater# .his is done byputting the wastewater into large settlement tanksfor the solids to sink to the bottom of the tank# .hesettled solids are called 5sludge6# $t the bottom of

these circular tanks" large scrappers continuouslyscrape the (oor of the tank and push the sludgetowards the center where it is pumped away forfurther treatment# .he rest of the water is then

    moved to the Secondary treatment#

    SECONDARY TREATMENT

.he water" at this stage is put into largerectangular tanks# .hese are calledaeration lanes# $ir is pumped into the waterto encourage bacteria to breakdown thetiny bits of sludge that escaped the sludgescrapping process#

    FINAL TREATMENT

7e)t the 5almost6 treated wastewater is passedthrough a settlement tank# 8ere" more sludge isformed at the bottom of the tank from thesettling of the bacterial action# $gain" the sludgeis scrapped and collected for treatment# .he

water at this stage is almost free from harmlesssubstances and chemicals# .he water is allowedto (ow over a wall where it is /ltered through abed of sand to remove any additional particles#

.he /ltered water is then released into the river
