London Heathrow Terminal 3A key element of the requirement was to allow for future system expansion, due to the evolving nature of the airport building environment. To provide scalability, ASL’s VIPEDIA-12 router and V2000 amplifier mainframe were chosen to form the heart of a powerful 19” rack solution with 28 discrete rack locations.

Using soft-settable amplifier power outputs and a highly modular design, the system allows the different nodes to be networked together with flexibility and ease. Fibre was chosen as the optimum option for networking the system across various locations and over vast distances.

Page 11: PRO-AUDIO, PUBLIC ADDRESS AND VOICE ALARM...PRO-AUDIO, PUBLIC ADDRESS AND VOICE ALARM For any project, for every industry. About ASL At ASL, public safety is our passion. In 1999,

With office blocks becoming larger and taller with every new development it is becoming more critical to be able to evacuate people quickly and safely in the event of an emergency and in multi-storey buildings, it’s vital to use voice alarm to control an evacuation in phases.

Using ASL’s voice alarm systems, pre-recorded voice messages are used to direct people to use the safest exit route from where they are in any given building. Zones or areas of the building can be manually selected for evacuation in a chosen order, to avoid congestion and potential panic of too many people trying to exit at the same time.

In retail environments, voice alarm is the safest method to provide shoppers with clear guidance on how to leave the building safely in the event of an emergency.

With ASL’s public address and voice alarm products it is possible to combine public address and voice alarms systems. This allows coded messages for staff to be broadcast alongside promotional announcements and music. In this way, staff can be alerted to potential security threats without alarming shoppers in the building.

“We have been working together for 14 years and I must say it’s been one of the most enjoyable working relationships of my career at Fone Alarm. The reliability of our rail PA systems and the outstanding service all my staff receive from ASL’s support personnel is second to none. ASL is supplier of choice for the vast majority of our customers, and I believe this is a reflection on both the product and the service they provide.”

With successful installations at over 2000 rail stations to date and products given special approval by national rail operators, our equipment can be relied upon to keep passengers safe, informed and protected at all times.

With increasingly more people using railways and underground metro systems every day, the requirements for safety and control at stations becomes ever more important. ASL’s Intelligent public address routing enables consistent and regular streams of announcements with minimal additional effort by staff.

In the event of an emergency, voice alarm announcements direct passengers to evacuate the station calmly and by the safest route, keeping panic at bay.

ASL’s rail solutions are designed with the needs of passengers and operators in mind and our amplification products deliver top quality sound and intelligibility, adjusting continuously to changing levels of ambient noise. ASL’s induction loop systems cater to the needs of those who are hard of hearing.

ASL has developed a set of rail solutions that will work seamlessly across many stations; from the local PAVA system with microphones, to Long Line PA systems (LLPA) using ASL’s VIPA software to connect multiple stations over IP, and Passenger Information Display System (PIDS), all managed centrally with ASL’s iVENCS control system.

ASL provides public address and voice alarm (PAVA) solutions for the houses of worship of all faiths. Our systems can be used for a variety of purposes; to broadcast speeches, background music or emergency messages. They can also be used for entertainment and foreground systems.

Often houses of worship can be acoustically challenging environments with hard, reflective surfaces and vast open spaces. ASL’s rack based systems can form larger, distributed IP based systems, well suited for covering expansive areas and with the latest VIPEDIA technology, ASL equipment can interface directly with line array loudspeakers commonly used in larger houses of worship.

Whether broadcasting live announcements or pre-recorded DVA messages, ASL’s EN 54-certified voice evacuation functionality quietly stands by in the background to ensure congregations are protected around the clock.

“ASL’s VIPEDIA and V2000 products are second to none; feature rich, superbly engineered and yet simple to operate and maintain. I have been using and specifying ASL’s products since the early 2000’s, and it has been enjoyable to see ASL grow into one of the market leaders in the public address and voice alarm industry.”

VIPEDIA-12

OverviewASL’s VIPEDIA-12 audio router provides routing between 12 analogue inputs and 12 analogue outputs. The device also includes provision for 64 internally stored Digital Voice Announcement (DVA) messages.

Using Digital Back Bone (DBB) up to four VIPEDIA-12 routers can be locally linked within a rack location to provide routing from any or all of their inputs to their outputs in a single logical 48 by 48 matrix. The VIPEDIA-12 also integrates seamlessly with ASL’s V400, X400 and V2000 amplifier mainframes to provide full system status monitoring and fault reporting as required by EN 54-16. This includes the monitoring and control of up to 64 (V400 / X400) or 32 (V2000) amplifier mainframes, and their associated amplifier and loudspeaker lines.

With the optional VIPEDIA-NET-4GB module installed, up to 32 VIPEDIA-12 routers can be networked over standard Ethernet. IP audio transmission is made using ASL’s Portable Media Carrier (PMC) format for compatibility with any of ASL’s IP enabled microphones (MPS-IP), iVENCS control systems and other VIPEDIA routers. Each VIPEDIA-12 can then send and receive six concurrent audio broadcasts.

Microphone inputs are connected via RJ45 connections using 0dBu balanced analogue audio and an RS485 serial link. To provide maximum security of operation, two audio inputs, normally assigned to Fireman’s microphones can implement router hardware bypass to ensure continued all-call microphone operation even if the matrix DSP or CPU has failed.

A full range of audio processing is available within the VIPEDIA-12. DSP based 24 bit / 48kHz audio functions include input dynamic input processing, individually adjustable digital output delay of up to 5 seconds and parametric equalisation.

In addition to audio interconnections , the unit includes 12 GPIO inputs (configurable as analogue or digital), 12 digital outputs and two relay outputs. These can be used for fire interfaces, fault input and output information or to select functions within the VIPEDIA-12.

VIPEDIA-12-PRO

OverviewVIPEDIA-12-PRO is a high quality audio processor and routing matrix. Integrated Dante and Secure Loop audio support allow both centralised and IP distributed architectures. Powerful processing and a range of control options make VIPEDIA-12-PRO the ideal choice for demanding audio applications.

Perfectly suited to centralised architectures, single units support up to 12 analogue audio inputs, 32 Dante sources and 12 zones. A fixed DSP architecture and device-based graphical System Configuration Tool (SCT) make configuration intuitive and fast.

For systems with more than 12 sources or zones, VIPEDIA-12-PRO includes integrated support for both Audinate’s Dante and ASL’s Secure Loop networking which enables up to 32 VIPEDIA-12-PRO to be networked as one group over Ethernet. A virtually unlimited number of groups can be linked to provide paging and music distribution using ASL’s VIPA audio-over-IP software across larger systems. Integrated Dante allows up to 32 sources to be sent over high quality uncompressed, digital media channels, with near-zero latency and exceptional synchronization across large decentralised systems.

Secure Loop offers a flexible alternative to Dante. Because broadcast streams are dynamically generated as required, there is no fixed limit on the number of inputs which can be used for network broadcasts. As many broadcasts can be made concurrently as the underlying network bandwidth can support. Each audio source can be configured to use either Dante or ASL’s PMC (Portable Media Carrier) networking. Both options support high quality, uncompressed audio and use UDP multicast for bandwidth efficiency in complex systems.

ASL offers a range of compatible wall controllers and microphones. Volume adjustment and source selection can be made from ASL’s WMC01 or by third party touchscreen devices such as Vity, Crestron and AMX - or any device capable of sending basic ASCII commands via UDP/IP messages, as required by ASL’s Vipedia Control Protocol (VCP). V2000

OverviewThe V2000 Voice Alarm Amplifier Mainframe is EN 54-16 compliant and provides the housing, control, and power supplies for up to 10 ASL D-series power amplifier modules in a 2U enclosure. Two D-series amplifier module types are available, with a maximum power rating of 500W (D500) or 150W (D150).

These are lightweight transformerless amplifier modules whose output power can be configured in software from 25W up to their maximum rating. The ability to configure the output power on each module enables optimum assignment of amplifier power within the overall capacity of mainframe and hence a compact system design.

AMPLIFIER INTERFACE

The LSZDC amplifier interfaces provide each amplifier module with 0dB analogue audio inputs, dual isolatable A and B loudspeaker circuit and either DC, Impedance or Loop Return loudspeaker line surveillance. Standby amplification can be provided internally within the V2000 or by means of an external standby amplifier. Use of an internal standby amplifier requires no standby wiring to be made. Use of an external standby amplifier requires the optional V2000-STBY module.

POWER SUPPLY

The mainframe includes a mains power supply, designed to operate on a 230V, 50Hz / 60Hz AC mains supply, with battery backup provided by means of a 24V DC power input.

D150 / D500OverviewD150 and D500 class D transformerless amplifiers provide 100, 70 or 50V audio output for distributed loudspeaker systems. The amplifiers are compatible with the V2000 Amplifier Mainframe and LSZDC dual line surveillance interface module.

The maximum output power can be configured from 25W to 150W (D150) and from 25W to 500W (D500). Up to 10 D150 and D500 amplifiers modules can be housed within a single V2000 Amplifier Mainframe.

The configurable output power capability of the D500 and D150 amplifier modules enables very flexible use of the mainframe, with reduced mainframe count, lower quiescent power requirement and improved environmental performance compared with traditional amplifier designs.

LSZDCOverviewThe LSZDC is an amplifier interface card for use with the D500 and D150 Transformerless Class-D Amplifiers in a V2000 Amplifier Mainframe for PAVA applications. It enables two circuits (A+B) to be fed from a single amplifier while still maintaining BS5839 Pt 8 compliance.

This interface card provides:

n Amplifier health monitoring via subsonic surveillance tonen Standby switchovern Loudspeaker line earth leakage monitoringn Loudspeaker line ‘End Of Line’ (EOL) monitoring.

Relays in series with each output facilitate isolation of faulty speaker circuits. Loudspeaker circuits can be monitored using DC, Impedance or Loop Return methods.

Each LSZDC includes powerful on-board digital signal processing (DSP) capability. This enables parametric equalisation, as well as gate and gain settings to be applied separately to each amplifier.

M100 / M200 / M400OverviewThe amplifier range consists of the M100 (delivering 100W), M200 (delivering 200W), and the M400 (delivering 400W). The amplifiers are housed in the V400 mainframe, and deliver power to a loudspeaker line even if the amplifier mainframe’s 230V mains supply is absent and the system is right down to a 21V battery supply voltage.

This unique design makes it unnecessary to ‘sleep’ the amplifiers during periods of inactivity, which improves efficiency and reduces heat dissipation.

LSDDCOverviewThe LSDDC is an amplifier interface card for use with the M100, M200 and M400 Class D amplifiers in the V400 amplifier mainframe.

Uniquely, it enables two circuits (A+B) to be fed from a single amplifier while still maintaining BS5839 Pt 8 compliance. The interface card provides amplifier health monitoring via a subsonic surveillance tone, automatic control of changeover to standby amplifier, loudspeaker line earth leakage monitoring, and loudspeaker line ‘End of Line’ (EOL) monitoring.

SSINTOverviewThe SSINT is an amplifier interface card for use with ‘standby’ M100, M200 and M400 Class D Amplifiers in the V400 amplifier mainframe.

This interface card provides monitoring of a standby amplifier within a V400 mainframe.

In the event of a failure of an ‘active’ amplifier driven by a connected LSDDC interface, this unit will automatically switch to powering the affected zone from the standby amplifier.

iPAM

OverviewThe iPAM400 Public Address Amplifier Mainframe is a 2U rack mount unit which combines amplification, routing, and Ethernet connectivity, together with loudspeaker line monitoring. The mainframes can be used as self-contained intelligent monitored PA systems, or as part of an IP networked system.

Two multifunction audio input and serial Input/Output (I/O) ports allow you to connect BMB01 Remote I/O Units to ASL paging microphones, or other audio sources. The BMB01 units in turn enable the connection of ASL Ambient Noise Sensors (ANS), and also provide flexible general purpose analogue and digital I/O. The ASL microphones can be configured for live speech paging and for DVA message broadcast locally at the host iPAM400, or anywhere else over the IP network. This means a microphone can broadcast at an adjacent unmanned station in the case of Long Line PA systems. Two extra audio inputs plus four audio outputs are provided by an optional XIO01 Audio I/O module. The optional Acapela Text-to-Speech module can be used in place of or as well as live speech and DVA message recordings if desired.

The iPAM400 can be remotely controlled using ASL MPS IP microphones, or by an ASL or other compatible third party PA workstation. A typical application of such a system would be at a Line Control Centre on a Long Line PA system. The iPAM400 connectivity, control, and monitoring functions also enable it to drive RS485 PIS displays, and to be used as a SCADA RTU to monitor and control third party equipment.

ASL’s Voice over IP (VoIP) and Digital Voice Announcement (DVA) solution, together with the optional Acapela Text-to-Speech module allows the use of both high and low bandwidth codecs or text-only IP interfacing, as appropriate to the network capacity and application.

Loudspeaker line monitoring is provided using either AC or DC line surveillance. The iPAM operates with dual power supplies, and either or both a 230V AC mains supply and a 24V DC supply.

The MPS10/20/30/40/50 units each consist of a MPS01 sloping desk console with a flexible gooseneck paging microphone, graphic LCD display, and silent operation ‘Touch to Talk’ touch pad button, together with one or more additional MPX10 zone selection and control button modules. The number of additional buttons depends on the model, with the MPS10 having 10 extra Select buttons, and the MPS50 having 50.

PA zone selection is provided by the Select buttons or by using the rotary selector and graphic LCD display. There is also a VU bar-graph which displays the microphone signal level.

The MPS range can be connected directly to either one or two ASL audio routers using analogue audio and a serial link. There is also an RJ45 Ethernet IP interface with Power over Ethernet for connection to ASL IP PAVA systems, and for use with VIPA enabled PC workstations. All interconnecting cabling and the microphone capsule are continuously monitored. As well as the main microphone gooseneck, there are 3.5mm jack plug connections for an auxiliary audio input, such as for background music, and for connection of a microphone headset. A general purpose local contact input and output enables use with PTT foot switches and external speak-now indicators.

The microphone, and all interconnect cables and the gooseneck microphone are replaceable to simplify maintenance. The MPS microphone range can be used freestanding on a desk as standard, or can be permanently mounted with the optional mounting bracket. This bracket gives options to mount the microphone flat on a wall, built onto consoles or fixed on desks.

The MPS can be purchased with a fist microphone replacement for the standard gooseneck if required. This is particularly useful if the microphone is console or wall mounted.
