A dynamic awning of extrapolated lines and curves from the existing St. Regis Hotel.

individual strips of material act as a unit to direct the visitors view towards the city’s monument Diana the Huntress Fountain, as well as to create a screen/barrier from the sun and wind, adding a sense of semi-closure along with its purpose of being an exposed terrace.

the veiling system of the strips enhance the changing transient experience. the design blends in with the building’s typology during the day as well as they perform as an icon at night

As New York City experiences more frequent and severe rainfall due to climate change, CSO (Combined Sewer Outfall) will pose an even greater threat to the City’s waterways. Additionally, the

weaknesses and failures of the City’s aging sewer system exacerbated the devastation in Red Hook, a priority sewershed, during and after Hurricanes Irene and Sandy. Weaknesses result in standing

water, inland flooding, and sewage backups into streets and private property, bringing the above-mentioned public health concerns into streets and homes. The solution to this problem is to manage

rainwater where it falls, and in doing so remove it from the combined sewer. This will mitigate CSO and support the proper functioning of the City’s sewer system during extreme weather events and

flooding. Through the dissemination of its results, Fluid Frontiers will be particularly impactful, allowing the City to better protect its watersheds, achieve Clean Water Act goals, and improve public health.

Fluid Frontiers intends to disseminate its finding through the development of a sewershed specific Water Management Toolkit, workshops with community members as well as

government stakeholders and an active website. The Fluid Frontiers project team has collaborated with Red Hook community representatives on resiliency projects in the past, and can leverage

its relationships as well as archive of Red Hook-specific work to benefit the project. Fluid Frontiers will take a distinct approach to steering strategic investments in alternative water management

projects, using community engagement (involving private domain in addition to the public right of ways) as a key initial step in the development of a cohesive environmental strategy that address

the failures of the sewer system.

The roof canopy is cut and pleated to maximize indirect natural light, passive solar heat gain, and when necessary, natural ventilation. External, evacuated solar hot water tubes are integrated into the canopy to harvest energy and to offset district heating and cooling loads.
