WHAT IS POCKET-SCREW JOINERY?WHAT IS POCKET-SCREW JOINERY?

Pocket-screw joinery at its’ simplest terms is drilling a hole at an angle into one workpiece and then joining it to a second workpiece with a self-tap-ping screw. This technique was actually invented by the Egyptians as they clamped two workpieces together and then bored a hole at an angle from the outside workpiece into the second workpiece. They then inserted a dowel with some glue and cut it off flush with the surface. This technique continued to evolve over the years into two main joinery methods, doweling and more recently pocket-screw joinery. The modern pocket hole joint grew in popularity with the creation of the self-tapping screw in the 1980’s which eliminated the need to drill into the second workpiece altogether.

Our step drill bit forms a flat-bottomed pocket hole and screw guide hole in one motion. The guide hole helps to align the screw so that it exits in the center of the workpiece, while the flat-bottom of the pocket allows the head of the screw to seat flush, pulling the joint tight.

Pocket holes are normally placed on the backside of the project, out of view. If in a visible location you can conceal the holes with solid wood pocket hole plugs. Five species are offered while plastic caps are available for MDF and melamine.

Common thread lengths are 1”, 1-1/4”, 1-1/2”, 2” and 2-1/2”. To choose the right screw for your application visit our website or reference your owners manual.
