    1. Levelness, unlevelled inside and out-

    side edgesgive an unbalanced feeling to theice, forcing the body toovercompensate. Un-

    leveled edges are caused by the inaccurate

    Background of the problemsIn minor league hockey, parents search from

    pro-shoptopro-shoptryingtofindtheperfect

    sharpener.Proteamssufferfromthatcoaches

    andequipmentmanagersoftennothavingtime

    toimplementastrategyforallaspectsofskat-ing, particulary skate sharpening. Many play-

    ers,evenProandAAAteams,useoverworked

    bladesorbananabladesatthecostofspeed.

    Newbladeshaveanapproximate6-11footradi-

    usrockerprofiledependingontheskatemodel

    andsize.Thiscorrelatesto38-52mmofblade

    toicecontact[Fig4],whichisnotenoughinthe

    new NHL, where the most importantasset isspeed.Anotherlimitisthatthefactoryprofileis

    intendedtosuitallplayers.Generallyafactory

    profileworksokay,butwhynottryacustomfit

    toachieveoptimaladvantage?Inthesameway

    ahockeyplayerchosestheirstick,theyshould

    alsobeabletotryoutskateblades.Whenchil-

    drenstartskatingat4-6yearsofage,thefactoryprofileof26-32mmofbladetoicecontactistoo

    short.Theyoungplayersbalanceandagilityis

    developing,andthereforeitisdifficulttolearnto

    skatewell.Youcanseethattheireffortisspent

    on trying tostandup insteadofdeveloping a

    goodskatingpostureandstride.Contouringofa

    radiusrockerof12-13ft,whichgivesmoreblade

    contact,54-56mmtotheice,willmakelearntoskatemoreeffectiveandfun.

    effectiveskating.Itisbeneficialinthenewtypeofintensetwowayplaywhereallfiveplayersonthe

    iceneedtobeinvolvedanddurable.Despitethis

    themostcommonhollowinNHLis1/2inchand

    sometimes even 3/8 hollow. For hockey players

    over200poundsitmeansextrahighfrictiononthe

    iceandthereforefatiguesetsinmuchquicker.To

    gainmorespeedProSharprecommendsacombi-

    nationofdifferentradiusrocker1219ft,tobecon-touredinthemidsectionandapproximately3/2of

    theblade.Seepictemplate,

    Itstheoppositetrend,however,forgoalieswhore-

    quireverysharpskateswithadeephollowof1/2

    1/4inch.Toimprovegoalieskatingthebladepro-

    fileshouldbesharpeneddowntoa22-40ftradius

    rocker.Comparethiswiththeclassicstylewitha80-120mmflatglidesurfaceandapproximately1

    inch hollow. Thebutterflystyledemandsagood

    griptoquicklygosidetoside,upanddown.For

    thispurposeprosharphasinventedatemplatefor

    thedoublehollow.Itmeansthattheskateissharp-endextremelysharp,forexample3/8inchhollow

    onthetoeandheel,andmoreshallow(5/8)inthe

    middle,whichallowsforasmotherslidemotion.

    Modernskatingisfastandcomplexwithlotsofin-

    sideoutsideedgeshifts,pivots,mohawks,forward

    andbackwardskating.ProSharpthereforeempah-

    sizesnoneoraverylittledifferencebetweenfor-ward anddefencesharpeningsettings.Defence-

    menshouldpayextraattentiontonotsharpenthe

    toedowntooaggressivelyduethispartbeingcru-

    cialinthebackwardskatingpush.Whenitscomes

    tosettingthebladeprofile(contouring)forforwards

    thepivotpointshouldbeplaced17-22mmback-

    wardof the blade mid point, and defence10-20

    mmbackoftheblademidpoint.

    Leading hockey players combine excellent tech-

    nique and strength with the right skates and

    blades.Toskatelikethebest,itisimportanttoput

    thefocusonaccuratelysharpenedbladesandan

    athletic, lowbody posture.These factorsarethe

    mostfundamentalingettingthemostoutofyour

    skatesandyourbody.Thesitpostureistheideal

    biomechanicalskatingbehaviorformaximumper-formancemakingitpossibletohavegoodbalance

    andstabilitywhileyouunloadpowertotheicedur-

    ingfullextension.Thebestplayershaveusedthis

    basicknowledgeofskatingandhaverefinedtheir

    sitpositioncomparedtoaverageskaters.

    Thenewskatingcharacteristicsshowsquickfoot-

    speedandedgeworkwithfrequentshiftsfromin-sidetooutsideedgeandviceversa.Thebestplay-

    ersmasterthesequalitiesandusetheiredgework

    skills to break patterns and be deceptive which

    meansthattheybecomehardtoreadforthe

    opponents.

    Furthertopickupandgainspeedinsteadofde-

    creasespeedwhenturning,theplayerneedsthe

    rightbladeprofileandhollow.Regardingposition-

    ing as the key todefend successfully, speed is-

    needed toget intothepositionin time. The best

    defencemendo not wait for the opponents, they

    skateupthezoneseveryoffensiveplay,andatthe

    sametimetheycutofftimeandspacefortheother

    teamplayers.

    Skating instructors and coaches who translateskatingdrillsintogamesituationswillberewarded

    withbetterunderstandingofhardworkandrepeti-

    tivetraining.Theendgoalistobuildarepertoireof

    movesandskatingskillsthattheplayercanusein

    aspiltsecondresponsetime.Tophockeyplayers

    Thebladeprofiledeterminesthe contactsurface

    between the blade and the ice[Fig 4 p.7]. Skate

    sharpeninginvolvesabalancebetweengrip and

    lowfriction.Whileinmotion,askaterwantstomax-

    imizeandmaintain theskatingglide.Thefrictionbetweenthebladeandtheiceshouldthereforebe

    minimizedwithanaccuratebladeprofile.Atthe

    sametime,wewantexcellentgriptotransferpower

    toaccelerate,shiftandstop.

    The blade profile should be selected based on

    your weight and skating preferences. The more

    youweigh,themoreofyourbladeshouldbetouch-ingtheiceinordertodisperseyourweightevenly.

    However,itisequallyimportantthatyourmuscles

    adapttothenewProSharpprofileinordertocon-

    tinuetoimproveyourperformance.So,insteadof

    trying tocorrect bad skatingwith the blades we

    stronglypromotegoodskatingposturetomakethe

    bestuseofyourbladesandskates.

    ProSharp recommends the radius profile or

    rocker[Fig5-6],which isthemosteffectivewayof

    grinding or contouring your skates. Modern high

    level skating requires increased maneuverability,

    quickerstartsandfastercrossoverskating,pivots

    etc.Note:anotherskatesharpeningmethodusesa

    glidesurfaceontheblade.Thismeans30-80mil-

    limetersofthebladesteelissharpenedflattotheicesurface[Fig7].

    A longer radiusprofile (wheremoreof theblade

    istouchingtheice)benefitstheskaterbyprovid-

    ingbetterstabilityandbalance,lessfrictionanda

    highertopspeed.Ontheotherhand,itreducesthe

    abilitytomakequickturns.Ashorterradiusblade

    profileresultsinmorefrictionbecauseitshrinkstheamountofcontactbetweenthebladeandtheice.

    Thiscausesmorepressuretobeputontheblade,

    forcingittocutdeeperintotheice.Thedeforma-

    tionoftheicecauseshigherfrictionfortheskater.

    Skatingwithashorterradiusprofileincreasesthe

    maneuverabilityofshortquickturns.

    Thebladehasthreesections[Fig8],theheel(20%oftheblade),themiddle(60%oftheblade)and

    thetoesection(20%oftheblade).Theheelfunc-

    tionsas balance, support and for turning,shifts,

    turnsstopsandcrossoverskating.Themiddleof

    theblade iswhereyoumainlyskatewithapush

    inthestrideandforglideonthefrontleg.Further

    start,stopsshifts,pivotsandturns.Thetoesection

    isusedforstartsandacceleration,toesnapandbackwardskatingpush.Note:Thereisafrequent

    transitionbetweenthebladesections.

    Thepivotpointreferstothecentreoftheglidesur-

    face,wherepivotsorshiftsbetweenforwardand

    backwardskatingmostlytakeplace.ProSharprec-ommendsthepivotbeingplaced5-25mmbehind

    thecentreof theblade.Theshallowestsegment

    of the bladeprofile shouldbeplaced there. The

    centreofgravityismainly5to25mmbehindthe
