Probationary Firefighter Assignments, Check-Offs, and Tests

The enclosed assignments, check-off sheets, and tests are a list of job requirements and skills that need to be mastered to become a competent Firefighter. They are designed to ensure that you will be oriented with the day-to-day fire department procedures, routines, methods, and policies of your position These assignments, check-off sheets, and tests require a Captain to sign-off and date the items when you have demonstrated that you are adequately versed in the specific task. When you feel you are ready to be tested/signed-off, make arrangements with your Captain. These assignments, check-off sheets, and tests are your responsibility. If they are lost or misplaced, they must still be completed within the 18 month probation. When all of the material is completed, please forward it to the Training Division through your Captain and Division Chief.

WELCOME TO “THE LIVERMORE-PLEASANTON FIRE DEPARTMENT”

The objective of the probationary period is to provide a basic knowledge of fire fighting principals and practices and assist in developing the skill level necessary to perform effectively as a firefighter in the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. The Department is obligated to provide instruction, standards, reference material, equipment and opportunity. However, the ultimate responsibility for successfully completing the probationary period lies with the individual. The Officers and all members of the Department are watching you, as a new recruit, and you do stand out. If you establish a good name for yourself now, you are off to a good start. Keep your eyes and ears alert to your assignments so that you will not have to be told the same thing day after day or be led around. Getting started on the right foot is very important. This Department expects all members to be neat, courteous, honest, moral, of good conduct, and be able to meet financial obligations. Failure on the part of the probationary firefighter to maintain this excellent Departmental reputation may mean dismissal. You are expected to conduct yourself accordingly as long as you remain a member of the Department. The actions of one member, reflects upon the entire Department and the Fire Service in general. If, you have a “know-it-all” complex and a “why-not-do-it-a-different-way” attitude, you are choosing the quickest way to lose influence and fire service friends.

Try to fit yourself into the Fire Department and into the Fire Company to which you are assigned. Don’t expect the Department or the Engine Company to mold to you. When you get some experience and know what it is all about, then you will be in a position to offer suggestions, comments, or even constructive criticism. The wise probationary firefighter says little, but asks and learns much. The Fire Station boaster says much, but asks and learns little. They also lead a surprisingly lonely existence. Beware of destructive criticism or petty gossiping; even if it is not intended maliciously it often results in malicious injury to an innocent party. Don’t let another person form your opinions regarding our Department or attitude toward other firefighters. Judge your co-workers and officers yourself, charitably, by what you see of them and by the way they treat you. Be cooperative with your co-workers as well as with your Officer. If you finish your work, give other members a hand with their work. Your officers will cooperate in that way with other companies at fires and at stations. This is not a one-member operation at any time. It is a team, and it can only function properly with all the components working as a team. Your personal appearance while on duty is IMPORTANT. Keep your uniforms clean and presentable. Keep your turnout clothing clean and in proper condition. The fire fighting profession is, judged by the public on the personal appearance of the members as well as the professional job that they do. You, are a public relations representative for the LIVERMORE-PLEASANTON FIRE DEPARTMENT to the general public with whom you come in contact, YOU ARE THE DEPARTMENT, you are their only contact with the Fire Department in most cases, and therefore, their opinion and judgment of the Department will be based on your conduct, personal appearance, and behavior.

In the Fire Service, a semi-military routine is employed as a means of providing effective departmental operation. Officers of the Department assume responsibility for such operation, and orders given by them are to be obeyed without question. All Officers should be addressed by rank. Discipline is absolutely necessary to insure the Department functions successfully and fires are efficiently extinguished. Remember, your superior officer is not a nursemaid and it is provoking to have to speak to you in regard to common sense matters of conduct and personal appearance. Keep in mind that your Officers expect you to know the rules and regulations and to abide by them. If there are any questions-ASK! The probationary firefighter, must obey orders without question to the best of their ability. Firefighters must have confidence in their company officers and should remain with them at fires or other emergencies until ordered elsewhere. It is against the policy of the Department for a firefighter to use his official position to secure advantages. Such practices discredit the entire Department. Local business people and citizens are paying firefighters salaries as taxpayers and should never be approached for additional favors by members of the Department. The honesty and trustworthiness of firefighters must be unquestionable because it is often necessary for them to enter homes and business establishments under emergency conditions with or without the knowledge of the owners. Complete faith in the integrity of the Departmental personnel by the public is imperative. It is the duty of the probationary firefighter as well as every other member of the Department to take special precautions with valuables by placing them in the hands of the officers, or by directing attention to them. The progress and promotion of any member of the Fire Department is dependent upon knowledge and ability to assume and complete additional responsibilities. Competition will be keen for any promotion the probationary firefighter may seek later.

The habits formed by doing good work at fires and at fire stations, while obtaining successful grades in probationary examinations, will play a decisive and important part in future promotional examinations. Good firefighters, as a rule, make good fire officers. Fire Departments can only be operated if good leadership by management is combined with loyal and well-trained personnel. The firefighter who is ambitious, honest, loyal, and takes pride in their job and our department, while training and studying diligently to master the vast store of fire service knowledge will become a good firefighter and a successful one. Your future depends upon you. Congratulations! Welcome to the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department and a rewarding professional career.
