It is the policy of EASTCONN that no person shall be excluded from participation in, denied the benefits of, or otherwise be discriminated against under any program because of race, color, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, genetic information, gender identity or expression, veteran status, disability or any other classification protected by state or federal law. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is an educational method that engages students in inquiry-based “real world” problem solving. It has been used extensively in medical education since the early 1970s. While already adopted in other fields including business, law and education, it is only beginning to emerge in engineering and technology education as an alternative to the traditional lecture-based approach. In this workshop, participants will use STEM PBL Web- based instructional materials called “Challenges” to enhance students’ content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and ability to work in teams. The STEM Challenges are based on authentic industry problems. The Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded the two projects: PHOTON PBL-DUE#0603143 and STEM PBL DUE#0903051.

In this workshop, participants will use STEM PBL Web-based instructional materials called “Challenges” to enhance students’ content knowledge, critical thinking skills, and ability to work in teams. The STEM Challenges are based on authentic industry problems.

The Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program of the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded the two projects: PHOTON PBL-DUE#0603143 and STEM PBL DUE#0903051.

Audience: All Teachers, School Counselors, Science Team Leaders and Teacher Leaders

Presenters: Judy Donnelly, Fenna Hanes

CEUs: 0.5 Fee: $50

As a result of taking part in this workshop, participants will:

• Learn how to incorporate problem-based learning into the classroom.

• Practice with Web-based STEM PBL Challenges developed through the PHOTON and STEM PBL projects.

• Learn how the Web-based STEM PBL Challenges can be used in the classroom.

• Have access to the PBL curriculum materials provided through the PHOTON PBL and STEM PBL projects of the New England Board of Higher Education funded by the Advanced Technological Education program of the National Science Foundation.
