Transformer Sizing Review the following transformer sizing procedure to ensure that yourtransformer is correctly sized for the number and type of hoses/guns youintend to use. The following table lists the maximum allowable wattage forthe melter.

Component Wattage @ 230 VAC

Any hose or gun 1000 W

Any hose/gun pair 1233 W

Any hose/gun module 2000 W

Hose/Gun modules 1 & 2 3000 W

Determine the total power consumption (in watts) at 230 volts for all of yourhoses and guns. The table below lists the wattages of common hoses andguns that are sold by Nordson Corporation. If your hose or gun is not listedin table, refer to the identification tag that is affixed to the hose/gun.

Transformer Function The transformer(s) reduces the input electrical service to 230 volts anddirects the reduced voltage to the melter’s main circuit board. The maincircuit board uses this voltage to power the hoses, guns, tank, and manifoldas well as provide control power to the CPU. No change in melterprogramming is required in order for the transformer to operate.

Connect the Electrical Service to the Transformer

1. Select a 3-wire (plus ground) input power cable rated for the maximumamperage required by the melter. Ensure that the cable meetsapplicable electrical codes and standards. Table 1 lists the maximumamperages (per line) for 400/480 volt ProBlue adhesive melters.

Table 1 Maximum Melter Amperages

Input Voltage Maximum Amperage

400 V 13 A

480 V 11 A

WARNING: Risk of electrocution! ProBlue melters must be installed with alockable power disconnect switch that completely de-energizes the melterby isolating it from its power source. Failure to de-energize the melter whenrequired can result in personal injury, including death.

WARNING: Risk of electrical shock or short circuit. Use rigid or flexibleconduit or an appropriately sized strain relief to protect the power cable fromthe sharp edge of the conduit knockout.

2. Remove the lid from the transformer.

3. (Optional) Remove the access panel on the end of the transformer toprovide easier access to the terminal block.

4. Route the input power cable between the power disconnect switch andthe transformer. Secure the cable to the transformer using cable clampP/N 331872 that is provided in the melter installation kit.

See Figure 3.

5. Connect the cable leads to the terminal block at terminals L1, L2, andL3.

6. Connect the ground lead to the terminal block at PE.

7. If you need 400 volt operation, go to Selecting 400 or 480 VoltOperation. Otherwise, go to step 8.

8. Connect the ground lead to the lid.

9. Coil the output power cable inside the terminal block compartment, andthen replace the transformer lid.

See Figure 5.

WARNING: Risk of Hand Injury!Remove the mounting plates from either side of the transformer beforesetting the melter down onto the transformer. Failure to remove the twomounting plates may result in fingers being caught between the melter andthe mounting plates.

1. Remove the mounting plates from either side of the transformer.

2. Set the melter down onto the transformer so that the tabs on either endof the transformer align with the mounting holes on the ends of themelter.

3. Secure the melter to the transformer by reinstalling the two mountingplates.

Troubleshooting The following table provides transformer-specific troubleshooting guidance.Refer to the melter manual, Section 6, Troubleshooting for general meltertroubleshooting information.

Problem Possible Cause Corrective Action

1. No power to melter Problem with customer powersource

No voltage plug installed

Loose/disconnected cables

Blown fuse

Problem with transformer

Check all three phases at terminalblock

Install correct voltage plug(PN 1047166)

Check cable between transformerand TB1 on main board

Check fuses (Kit PN 1058426)

Check voltage into primary oftransformer(s) and voltage atsecondaries.

2. Fuse(s) fail frequently Transformer is overloaded

Incorrect tap setting

Verify that total hose/gun power doesnot exceed capability of transformer

If using 400 volt operation, ensurethat the correct tap settings are used.Refer to Selecting 400 or 480 VoltOperation.
