Bob was born September 26, 1926 in Huntsville, Ontario, where his father was in the lumber business. Bob had a younger brother, Gerald Francis. Bob attended Ridley College from September 1941-1945. After Ridley, he spent five years at the University of Toronto, studying business, engi-neering, and forestry, and also took a course in mathematics and physics at Trinity College. From 1946 to 1950 he was also a cadet in the Royal Canadian Navy's University Naval Training Divi-sion. During this period, he caught poliomyelitis, which set him back a bit. During the two years it took him to recover, he says he slept a lot in class and at sports events.

He married Phyllis Jane Echlin in Toronto, on February 3, 1951. They have four children: Fran-

cis Drew (1952), Business Program Consultant at Business Enterprise Resource Network, with two children; Emily Ann (1955), married to Keith Harris, CFO and managing director of Westwind Part-ners, Inc. in Toronto with one child and two stepchildren; Robert Scott (1959), president and CEO of Aspen Properties, Ltd., Calgary, with two children. Edward McVicar Blake (1961), president and. CEO, Oxford Properties, Toronto, married to Susan Farrow, and they also have two children. There are nine grandchildren in all that Bob adores and spends as much time with as possible. In addition to raising four children, Jane, who died in 1998, directed 68 plays and musicals in Huntsville dur-ing the forty-six years she lived there. Her daughter, Ann, continued her love of theatre as actress and model, and his granddaughter Beatrice (Bea), is also just beginning her acting career.

Bob started work as a salesman for Muskoka Wood Products, Ltd., a company started by his grandfather that became Canada's largest supplier of hardwood flooring. In 1956-57, he worked for a public company, US Plywood, in purchasing and sales. At the same time, he went into business for himself. Hutcheson Christmas Trees (1956-67) (at one time they had 3,000 acres planted with 3,000,000 trees), as well as Lake Vernon Oil Products, Ltd. (1957-64), a company that delivered gasoline and fuel oil. In 1959 he started Lake Vernon Realty, Ltd., a local real estate holding and operating company of which he is still president. Lake Vernon Realty built the Huntsville Courthouse and also owns the heritage house known as “The Pink House” which both lease units to government and professional businesses. In 1967 Bob started to sell the tree farm and started what would be another major business enterprise.

He bought a large tract of land on part of which he developed a sand and gravel business

that would specialize in aggregates - mixtures of various types of sand, rock, soil, and other min-erals for special purposes. By the 1980s, after extensive research,: the company developed a large variety of aggregates specifically for golf greens, bunkers, high speed highways, and spe-cialized beaches for volleyball and other athletic games. These products are sold not only all over Canada, but in Australia, Greece, China, and Dubai (quite a feat, selling sand to the Arabs). As Bob puts it, "I consider that we were experts on dirt”. In 2001, he sold the company. Hutcheson Sand & Gravel gained international recognition by providing beach volleyball sand and courts for the London 2012 Summer Olympics, the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and the 2004 Olympics in Ath-ens.

Bob’s main focus currently is his latest business Hutcheson Forest Industries Inc. After ac-quiring lake properties previously owned by his grandfather, Bob has since been developing roads and installing hydro to various properties he has listed for sale in the Huntsville area. It is his in-tent that many other properties he owns will remain as protected forest areas.

Bob has been active in the Huntsville community: town councilor, board of Thornloe Univer-sity, and of Osler Bluff Ski Club, Boy Scouts of Canada leader, President of the Huntsville Ski Club, and Director of the Canadian National Alpine Ski Association. In 2004 he was awarded the Natural Heritage Stewardship Award by the Muskoka Heritage Foundation with recognition of his environmental achievements. In August, 2012 Bob was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his entrepreneurial skills, love of community and the natural environment. In May 2014 he was thrilled to be inducted into the Huntsville Sports Hall of Fame, alongside Huntsville’s Dara Howell, Olympic gold medalist at the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Bob has been involved in both Winter and Sum-mer Games and volunteered at the starting gate for the downhill race at the 1988 Calgary Winter Games.

His hobbies are skiing, fishing, hunting, biking, waterskiing, hiking, travelling, and pho-tography. At the age of 89, Bob enjoys excellent health and is still able to take pleasure in all of these hobbies on a regular basis. He enjoys tell-ing stories and has many to tell.

President Lynne pulled out all the stops with hilarious jib jabs (so delighted Ron Halmos’ grandchildren were there to witness his Irish dancing!) Lots of green, lots of boas, plenty of glitter and of course prizes awarded to the best costumes. The winners were Mary Jane McCarey and Lynne Fletcher. Congrats ladies!!

Wine Appreciation CONTACT: JEFF & ANN COX 705-685-9900 [email protected] One of the wine groups reported that their March get-together was dedicated to Sparkling Wines! OOOh that sounds marvelous! And it wasn’t the “BRIGHTS PRESIDENT” at $9.95 that won…. It was the most expensive “TATTINGER BRUT RESERVE” cham-pagne at $59.95 that was chosen as the hit of the evening. Hen-kell Trocken $14.95 was next. Then Villa Sandi at $13.95 and then GIRLS NIGHT OUT at 14.95.

Membership Report - Betsy Rothwell

There are 192 members in the PROBUS Club of Huntsville, with a cap of 200. This is a good time to invite friends to join and enjoy all of the activities PROBUS has to offer! There were 71 members and 3 guests at the March 2016 meeting. Please remember to wear your name badge at PROBUS events, including our monthly meetings. This makes greeting other members easy. And be sure to pick up your 2016 Photo Directory of Club Members – put a face to that name, or a name to that smiling face! New PROBUS members have a red dot on their name badges. Please take a few moments to introduce yourself during the coffee break, welcome them to our club, and encourage them to join the Events and Interest Groups. Have you lost or misplaced your name badge? Let me know so I can order another at a small cost to you. If you have any changes to your address, phone or email information, please advise Betsy Rothwell at [email protected].

“Awesome Hikers of Probus”

“A HOP”

In March an ad hoc committee began the planning process for this year’s hikes. Here is the general consensus:

Have one significant hike each month from May through October each year; Limit each hike to 20 km; Have a different person volunteer to do the hike planning and coordination each month; Try to plan 10km (or less) in morning, all meet for a trail lunch, and an optional additional (maximum)10km

in aft; The park is wet and buggy early in the season so that might be saved for July onwards; Road hikes would be ideal for May-June.

We have settled on the following Schedule: Month/Date** Rain Date** Organizer Hike Location May 10 May 13 J David Mason Trans Canada Trail Thru Huntsville June TBA July TBA Jim Miller August TBA J David Mason Algonquin Park – details to follow September Betsy Rothwell “ “ - “ “ “ October Barbara Burton “ “ -Centennial Ridges ** we will try to pick a regular schedule of hike dates that work best for all (e.g. the first Tuesday and Friday, respectively of each month. Please express your interest in the May hike asap. We have maps to distribute to all that sign up and further details to follow. Does anyone have detailed info on the Trans Canada Trail other than the map? Two of us will walk it well prior to the event to collect data on accessibility etc. Total distance will likely be well under 20km with a break for lunch. Anyone wanting a shorter hike can arrange transportation home from town in afternoon. We are open to any and all suggestions for this May and other hikes! Please email me to express interest, or call: [email protected] 705 635 2927
