I MPORTANT NOTICE

At the last gat hering a motion was presented and voted upon bythe members present that , for the present, a yearb ook would beprinted only on the even years and on the odd years a pamphletwould be issued recording the proceedings of the gather ing for thatyear. All papers and historical data wiII therefore be printed onlybi-annu ally.

T he reason for this curtailment is obvious. Heretofore the costof printing and mailing the yearbooks has taken all of the availablecash from the treasury and little or nothing was left to furth er theexpansion of the society.

W e are now making a special effort to get as many eligible members as possible to join with us. Thi s requires a large expenditurefor postage and stationery.

From early reports we are getting splendid result s from thisdri ve and the money is well spent. If we can merely double ourpaying members in the next two or three years we can again resumethe yearbook annually.

I realize that our members who live at a distance receive littl e ofthe benefits of our Clan , other than the yearbook, but I hope you wiIIbear with us for a short while.

DOU GLAS NEIL MAGRUDER, Chieftain.

P . S. All dues should be sent to our new treasurer, Henry MagruderTaylor, 28 Will way Road, Richmond , Va.

REPORT OF THE DEPUTY SCRIBEANNE WADE SHERIFF

October 17, 1947

Mr . Chieftain , Ladies and Gentlemen of the Council-Another year haspassed, and again we "gather" at Old St . Paul' s Parish Hous e. T he summeris gone-the flowers are all faded. The leaves are already turning to crimsonand gold- which tell s us that Jack Frost has been about. So thi s reminds usthat Winter is not so far away. It makes us sad, very sad, to think of somany vacant chairs in our "council" since the Clan was organi zed. Memorybring s to my mind our first Chieftain, Dr. Edward May Magruder ; Dr.Stuar t Muncaster ; Mr . Alexander Munca ster, my own beloved husband,Clement Willi am Sheriff; Mr. P. H. Sheriff ; their esteemed cousin, Ma ry T .Hill ; Miss Mary Magruder ; Mr . Caleb Clarke Magruder who served theClan as Hi storian, Editor and Chieftain. Dr. Egbe rt Watson Magrud er, whowas with us at our last council meeting, and who was also our Chiefta in forseveral years and served on many committees. He was a lovable person, trul ya Virginia gentleman of the old school. Egbert Magruder was the youngestbrother or our first Chieftain and last child of his parents. Hi s big brothercalled him "Little Egbert"-he would trudge aft er them over fields andmeadows-they would help him over the fences and carry him "Piggy Back"as they visited their may rabbit gums in old Virginia. This is related in apaper written by our first Chieftain. Well ] they have all "passed the bar "and have met their Pilot face to face .

I have sent cards to all officers and member s of the council and have enjoyedserving for many year s as Deputy Scribe, charter, and associate member. Ido not recall having missed over two gath erings since the Clan was organizedand m~ fellow councilmen-this is my "Swan Song", I am giving in myresignation today, as Deput y Scribe, to take effect at thi s meeting.

In connection with the foundati on fund, Mr s. van den Berg was auth orizedto order ten additional Coats of Ar ms.

It was Commodore Magruder 's suggestion that advertising might be usedin the Year Book, this, of cour se, to be of a type in keeping with the dignit y ofthe book. Such advertising is used by the Maryland Hi storical Society, and itwas the fee ling of the Committ ee that it would be worth tr ying for our publication. It was thought that notice should appear also in the Year Book, asa reminder to all, of the plan to augment this fund by popular subscription, legacies, memorial gifts, etc.

Mr . H erbert T. Magrud er requested that a new Chairman fo r the Committ ee for Future Planning be appointed in his place.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE FOR FUTURE PLA NINGAMERICAN CLAN GREGOR SOCIETY

HERBERT THOMAS M AGRUDER, Chairman

OCTOBER 17, 1947

As reported last year the following needs exi st for future advanc ementof American Clan Gregor Societ y. They bear repeating.

I-Placing Year Books in a greater number of Libraries.2-Photostating Old Family Bible Record s, Will s, Land Grants, Ma rriage

Bonds and Genealogical Charts.3-Cuts of Historic Photographs.4-Binding the Society' s Membership and Genealogical Records.5-Preparation of a Comprehen sive Index of Year Books and other Data.6-As an Ultimate Objective the Acquisition of an Old Maryland Home

for the Society's Headquarters.

A start has been made towards the realization of these objectives. Muchmore is to be done; and there are these other urgent needs.

(a) Mor e Member s who will become actively interested.(b) More prompt payment of dues by present members .

Our Society is Nationwide in scope. It should become more Nationwidein active participation by its members. It was wisely planned to hold ourAnnual Gatherings here in the Nati on's Capital, so close to the roots of ourfamily in America. But the responsibility of working actively for Ameri canClan Gregor Society should not rest so largely on the shoulders of the loyalgroup of Wa shingtonians, who do most of the planning and laboring for theClan. The Coat of Arms project, originated by the Regi strar, Mr s. van denBerg, has proven quite a successful activity, as you will note from the Reportof the Treasurer of thi s Committee.

Several other suggestions have been made, but the means of accomplishinghoped for results have not developed . It is a disappointment to your Committeethat no additional Memorial Gifts have been received this year. Nor have anybequests come to our Society from those who have gone to answer the callto that Greater Gathering of loyal spirits. A remembrance of this sort, evensmall in amount, would show enduring love for the spirit of Clanship we allcheri sh so dearly.

But great as is the need for additional capital funds, the need for active ,zealous interest in Clan fellowship, and individual effort to sustain our Societyis even greater. We have no mean history of achievement during the 38 years

REPORT OF THE CHIE FTA IN

15

M R. FRA NK C ECIL MAGRUDER

It was with conside rab le hesitancy that I accepted th e office of the Chieftaina year ago. But I did : with the understanding that I would do the best Icould ; and I knew at the time that I was not perfect and that ther e were thosein the Clan who had ideas about its affai rs which were considerab ly differen tfrom mine. I also knew that a great many members of our Clan had ceasedto pay dues and had ceased to take any active par t in th e activities of the Clan.

We sta rted the year with a balance in the Bank of $58.70, accord ing to thetreasurer 's report of October 1946, and though the treasur er has w ork ed like a"trojan" our income has barely kept pace with our expenditure s.

Th e Doctor Edward May Magruder Scholarship in the School of Medicineat the Universit y of Virgin ia amounting to $50.00 was given to Na thanielMcGregor Ew ell, Jr., again this year. Mr. Ewe ll gra duated in J une of thisyear and so far no one has made application to receive the Scholar ship. Th eamount in the fund originally was $1,200.00, which at the rate of interest setup hy the Universi ty amount ed to $50.00 each year. Th ere have been someyears that there was no eligible person in the College of Medicine at theUniversi ty. As a result of that condition the money for that year was not used.

During my correspondence with the Bursar of the University I lea rnedthat there was a balance of unused funds of $150.00. The question then aroseas to whether to give this balance to the recipient of the first $50.00 or tocar ry it over and add it to the original or principal amount. Thi s matter wastaken up with the members of the Council and the maj ority opinion was thatany unused funds any year should be added to the principal sum. I wrote theBursar according ly and he advised me later that our wishes would be compliedwith and that on Ju ne 30, 1947, there would be added to the principa l the sumof $200.00. Th is makes the pr incipal sum now in the Scholarship fund at theUnivers ity $1,400.00. T his amount is to draw 4'10 interest.

By lett er of December 20, 1946, Mr. John Bowie Ferneyhough sent me hisresigna tion as Editor of the Clan. H e sta ted that he was working very hardand that there was sickness in his family, making it impossible for him tocontinue as Editor. T he matt er was taken up with Miss Hill and Mrs. vanden Berg and some inquiry was made to find some one who would be ableand willing to tak e over the job. A fter a littl e futile search and some correspondence, we did not find anyone to take over the job. W e decided thatthe only thing to do was for us to get out the Yea r Book. Myself actingEditor.

We begun by Mi ss Hill and Mr s. van den Berg gett ing mat erial togetherand I looking about for a printing firm to do the printing, binding, etc. for us.I received bids on the work runnin g all the way from $5.50 per page to $14.50per page based on 500 books. W ashington printers were the highest , Baltimorenext and Richmond the cheapest. W e contracted the work with Cussons, Mayand Company as you will see in your Year Books. T here was considerab le

correspondence regarding the size of type to be used. The lar ger type preferred by some as being more easily rea d could be secured for $4.50 per pageand the smaller type (as finally decided on ) could be secured for $5.50 perpage. Th ere was not much difference in cost as the printers could get somany more letters on a page of the smaller type tha n they could of the lar gertype. However there was some slight saving in postage as the smaller typemade less pages, so weighed less, and took less postag e. We inveigled theGovernment into shipping them for 4c, which was much less than what waspaid for postage on the books a year ago. The printers gave us 520 bookswithout any charge for the extra 20 books. The cost of the books amounted toabout $1.27 each. 425 books were mailed out and some 18 or twenty werereturned for vari ous reasons, principally because the party had moved andleft no address. Addresses were found for most of them and the booksremailed to the new addresses.

Martha D. Magruder has been most helpful to me during the year, beingcustodian of the clan property, keeping the rats, moth s and so forth out of it ;she and I decorated the hall yesterday afte rnoon and evening. She al so addressed all of the envelopes for mailing out prog rams and notices of thi sGathering, also addressed all of the envelopes for mailing out the Year Books ;arranged for the use of the Guild Hall today and arranged for the luncheon.

Back to the Editing of the Year Book aga in. I want to tell you of someof our experiences. Miss Hill had prepared a wonderf ully nice report of eachof our serv ice people and we had several articles submitted for publication inthe Year Book. When I begun to get prices and figure up the pages I foundthat we had material enough for about 225 pages. So we had to begin revising.Miss Hill completely rewrote the articles about the service men, other articleswere rewritten and reduced in size, and still other articles were not publishedat all. In fact I have enough mat erial to make another Year Book of about thesame size as the one printed. This material I will turn over to the new Editorand he can do as he likes about printing it. Only one of the articles submittedfor the Yea r Book and which was not print ed has been withdrawn. It will bethe discression of the writer whether she wishes to resubmit it again or not .

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEEREGINA MAGRUDER HILL, Reporting

Your Chairman has written many letters to prospects for membershipand at the start of the year sent a copy of her report made to the 1946Gathering to each Deputy Chieftain. Thirty Membership Applications havebeen signed.

I am wondering if some of our members know of any of the descendantsof Nathaniel, son of Alexander the immigrant, other than the one line throughhis son George which appears in the 1938 Year Book on page 86. There is abig field for membership conta ined in that Chart. There is also a large fieldthrough Alexander's son, Alexander II, who married Susanna Busey . Hi sson Alexander III and Elizabeth Howard had ten children. I hope we will beable to locate many more of their descendant s.

HONOR ROLL COMMITTEEREGINA MAGRUDER HILL, Chairman

The work on the Honor Roll of World War II is about completed. Duringthe year we have had 15 additions to this roll among which was one who hadgiven his lif e for his country.

A list of the Honor Roll members appears in the Year Book published in1947 and several were received after this list was printed. It was intendedto print data pertaining to the Honor Roll personnel; field of operation, honorsreceived, and the names of their wives or husband, children and parents sothat thi s would be a genealogical as well as a Service record. But unfortunately there were not funds in the trea sury to do thi s. The material was allready and typed, but had to be taken out. We hope to print thi s at a later date .

We have one mor e Gold Sta r for our Honor Roll, Staff Sergeant GarlandBurnl ey Taylor, son of Franklin Minor Ta ylor and Alice Poindexter Peyton. He was wounded in an attack on the German positions at Bre st. After twomonth s of hospitalization in England he rejoined his outfit in Belgium, and onNovember 29th, 1944, was killed in action at Huertzen Forest in German y.Sergeant Ta ylor was the grandson of our late member Lucy Ann GilmerMagruder and Garland Burnley Taylor, and a nephew of Henry MagruderTaylor , to whom this Certifi cate of Appreciation and Clan Medal of Honoris presented in his memory.

part of this Gathering. We should value our Clan Membership and ourGatherings more than ever before, for we are meeting in an era such as noneof us has ever known, yet it is the hour of our greatest opportunit y. There iswork to be done, work for your Socie ty, your Clan. Let us review the pastand plan with faith and hope for the future. Thanks and appreciation to eachone for coming.

It is with prid e and much sati sfaction that I am privileged to address thisGathering. I am now at the end of my sixth year as your Chieftain. WhenI recall all that has transpired in those past six years we are pra yed ully tha nkful for Victory and that so many of our boys have been spared and returnedhome safely. On the other hand we gravely regret the expiration of some ofthe devout and earne st work er s and members of our Clan. We miss theirfamiliar faces, their good suggestions and their f r iendly hand-shakes.

These Annua l Gatherings ar e requisite in order to fulfill our four Objectivesof the Society. We must gather kindred together in Clanship and foster hometies. We deem it very vital to inspire cordiality among the member s, and tofind new kinsfolk for members. Last, but not least, we must ~ollect genealogical and historical records and heirlooms and preserve them for our posterity;also for the future of the organization.

During my tenure of office there have been many pleasant experiences; yetI would not be honest if I did not admit that there have been some grievancesand times of worry and annoyances. However, with my faithful "He lpers- inOffice", we have done our best to conquer and subdue them. The value of theknowledge and experiences is greatly pri zed by me. All with whom I havehad transactions, have worked untiringly and conscient iously. Dues have beencoming in. New members have been added to the list and some have beenre-instated. But there is still plenty to be accomplished. W ith prices soaringhigher and ever upward we have tried to keep down expe nses. As you allknow, there are many necessary requirements which must be surmounted. OurAmerican Clan Gregor Society demands cooperation, mutual aid and consideration. T he "CLAN" of which we dream and talk, was not organized, thirt yeight years ago, for personal gains and advantages, but for our frie ndshipand c1anship with and for others . It take s all of you to do the work for thewelfare and growth of your Clan.

Now we are entering upon a new term, we stand at the threshold of anotherdawn , another year is ahead of us. We will have some new officers and someof the same ones, so let us all advance with our minds open and responsive fornew and beneficial ideas for the American Clan Grego r Society.

"Do not think a Chieftain can alone achieve; He needs the help of all others-who believeGreat ta sks demand that back of him who leads,Stand many members, ever eager with their deeds;Members pledged to help in work well planned,Alert to follow those who give command."
