Right Eminent Grand Commanders Address

Report from the Right Eminent Grand Commander of Colorado to the Grand Commandery of Colorado

Background Earlier this year marked 30 years since becoming a proficient Master Mason in my father’s Lodge. It was life changing. Afterward I began my Masonic journey by being installed as Junior Steward and was privileged to sit in every chair leading to sitting in the East to preside over the affairs of the Lodge. That doesn’t happen these days. It was a blessing for me. We need to do things and make the decisions now to reclaim that process.

Page 9: PROCEEEDINGS OF - York Rite · Shane Ennis, State Senior Councilor, Colorado DeMolay J D Smith, Deputy State Master Councilor, Colorado DeMolay . 4 PROCEEDINGS OF THE ONE HUNDRED

9

In those days, moving up the line as an officer was intimidating and challenging in the beginning, but learned how to be a good officer. I found it critical to work with my superiors learning to be comfortable asking questions about things I didn’t understand, and the things I perceived needed knowing. They were as eager to teach as I was to learn; another blessing. Communication in a kind way forms a good officer corps up and down the line. I made it my goal to ask enough, participate enough, in order to gain the confidence to do what was required on my way up the line. Upon arriving in the East at installation, I found it my turn to take the obligation as Master. It struck me as in preceding years that I was given the responsibility of serving our brethren with distinction and honor, a tradition in our Lodge. I decided to petition Denver Consistory and the Golden York Rite bodies and going through the degrees and orders of all. I found the information presented was like drinking water out of a fire hose. But as with the first three degrees of Masonry the more I participated in the work, the more I learned. I didn’t expect that the learning was a continuous process. I know now it’sa life-long process and our duty to dedicate ourselves to it. I received my first Grand line appointment in September of 1999 when Grand Commander Darrell Tygart appointed me as Grand Sentinel. It was a great time traveling the state carpooling with our Grand Commander Darrell and his Deputy Bob Hass and found it a real education and a lot of fun. It was a great honor to serve and never had a thought I’d be considered for another appointment, but when spring of 2000 came a vacancy occurred and I was asked by MIGM Alan Hatfield to join the Grand Council line. I was still working, too young to retire, which was a consideration, but accepted regardless. I found serving in a progressive line had a greater learning curve and required much more time and commitment, however very rewarding traveling and making new friends. Grand Officer Recommendations Being a good presiding Grand officer takes work, commitment, time, and funds. Most important, for each and every dues paying, card carrying member that we serve in this jurisdiction, serve them first. Ask what they need then provide it, or discuss ways to meet the need. Secondly, it is also your duty to serve the constituent bodies and our Colorado Masonic Family institutions as well, youth groups and appendant bodies. They are our future. Travel enough, so that you know your membership and they know you. Arrive early, leave late. Talk with them on your visits. Ask them about the things they do every day for fun and for work and how they spend their free time and tell them what you do as well. Share with them what it’s like to be a Grand officer. Do a “health check” about membership, finances, building, property and safety issues. Recommendations for all Sir Knights In order for you to be York Rite Masons you had to first become Master Masons. The oaths we all took at the Altar, are binding for the rest of our days here on Earth. If every day we truly honor our obligations, making that a life skill, as Christian Knights, going out of our way to “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Living that mission for the rest of our lives, we will all enjoy our just rewards forever eternal in the Heavens. We learn in the Past Commanders Association ritual, our Masonic journeys we are obligated to serve… and serve… and serve. That’s what we do as Knight Templars. Be safe in your travels, give your troubles to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and celebrate your joys.

GRAND COMMANDERY OF KNIGHTS TEMPLAR OF COLORADO LONG RANGE PLANNING

COMMITTEE REPORT

A five year plan has yet to be adopted, however several priorities are in the works.

1. Quarterly Communications. Each of four Encampments, designated within the

jurisdiction of Colorado, will host an annual communication. Commanderies within the

Encampment will be encouraged to participate and attend, coordinating to ensure a ten man

opening is undertook. The Quarterly Conclave will end with a banquet.

2. Revamp of the annual sessions. Consolidating the annual sessions to a two day affair is

a priority to enable younger, working Sir Knights to be able to attend. The hope is to have most of

the action on Friday afternoon and Saturday. If we are to attract younger Sir Knights, we need a

schedule accommodative of the demands of regular working hours.

3. Increase membership by 10% over the next three years. The number of dimits and the

number of suspensions both exceed the number of deaths. Membership retention is a priority,

seconded by new membership goals. It is hoped the revamped sessions schedule and Quarterly

Conclaves will assist in increasing participation and membership retention.

4. Membership survey. An online survey is being devised to send to all Knights Templar.

Our hope is to generate data by which to correct the declining membership.

Forces.

Our Commanderies continued to distinguish themselves in conducting or participating in

I wish to thank our Grand Commander who has provided an article every month. Without input from and about Colorado Commanderies, the Supplement serves no purpose. I wish to ask that when a Commandery is having a special event or work on the Orders that I be provided with the necessary information for publication. The deadline for the magazine is the first of the month prior to the month of publication. This is a hard and fast rule of the national editor. Report of the Holy Land Pilgrimage To the Grand Commandery Knights Templar of Colorado: The Knights Templar Holy Land Pilgrimage trip is a wonderful way for clergy to visit the Holy Land with other clergy from different churches. Pilgrims must be in a credentialed ministry, serving in a leadership ministry for at least one year. They also must be in good health as the schedule can be strenuous. This trip is an educational and spiritual study seminar. This trip is not a vacation but a time to learn, to grow and to deepen ones spiritual life. This program is intended to enhance the ongoing preaching, teaching and overall biblical understanding of the participant and in turn, benefit those they serve. The cost is approximately $3,500 which covers almost everything. This year we sent Reverend Paul Bruner, Flatirons Community Church. Ministers who take the trip must be willing to return and share their experience. I took the trip years ago and it was an experience I will always remember. Fraternally,

It has been a pleasure to serve the Grand York Rite Bodies as Grand Musician for the past year. I

provided marching and inspirational music for the 2016 Grand Sessions held at the Double Tree

Outside of the Grand York Rite sessions I played seasonal music for the Knights of

Columbus/Knights Templar Conclave in Leadville and for the reception of the Grand Officers at

the official visits of the Grand Chapter RAM and the Grand Council Cryptic Masons in Leadville.

An additional activity was marching in the color guard with the Knights of Columbus at Lake

County High School graduation.

Serving as Grand Musician is a creative and enjoyable way tp contribute to the duties of the Grand

York Rite Bodies.

MASONIC YOUTH

Report of Rainbow for Girls

Sir Knight Joe Kier gave a verbal report on the activity of Rainbow for Girls for the term 2016-2017.

Report of Job’s Daughters 206-2017 Term

To the Right Excellent Grand Commander, Grand Wardens, & Sir Knights of Colorado,

I present to you the report on Colorado Job’s Daughters for the 2015/2016 capitular year. The

2016/2017 year began with Mrs. Amy Goings and Worshipful Brother Greg Steele leading Colorado

Job’s Daughters with the motto: “Be the Women that Inspire Us.” The mantel of leadership does not

shift from these Junior Past Guardians as they will serve as Grand Bethel Guardians for Colorado.

Ms. Wendy Leff and Worshipful Brother Mike Foster have taken joyful activity of leading our

Colorado Jobs Daughters as Grand Guardian & Associate Grand Guardian. We wish these adults

the blessings of deity and know that they will provide leadership and guidance to the fairest in the

land.

Colorado Job’s Daughters continues to provide a strong leadership and moral values to our daughters.

The Grand Session this year will see the installation of Ms. Molly Anderson to the position Grand

Bethel Honored Queen. Ms. Kya Hornsby has done a wonderful job representing the organization as

Miss Colorado and has been busily planning for the 48th Annual Miss Colorado Pageant. The

leadership all of these young ladies have provided to the Colorado Masonry should make us all very

proud.

Please keep in mind that a young lady with no Masonic relationship can be sponsored by a Mason so

that they can petition to become a Job’s Daughter. Our involvement in our youth groups leads to

better citizens of our great nation and hopefully members in our organizations.

If you want to grow our fraternities become a part of tomorrow.

Respectfully submitted,

/s/ Darin Roen

Report of DeMolay 2016-2017 Term

To the distinguished Grand York Rite of Colorado.

Colorado DeMolay has had a momentous year. We have met growth for the eighth year in a row finishing with

238 young men that are active in the Order of DeMolay. The majority of these new members are located along

the Front Range from Colorado Springs to Fort Collins. We did, however, reinstate a new Chapter on the Western

Slope in Grand Junction. We have five young men at this time that are very active and have helped with many

Masonic service projects from working at the Shrine Circus to serving dinner for Eastern Star and Rainbow.

In July of 2016, with the help of a generous donor, we were afforded the opportunity to send 30 young men to

one of the most successful leadership conferences DeMolay has to offer. Great Plains DLC is located in

Tahlequah Oklahoma and runs for an entire week. The young men that attend this conference always come back

rejuvenated and full of new ideas, it has proven to be a great program. We had to rent two 15 passenger vans to

make the trek to Tahlequah and with the aid and support from some dedicated Advisors from Colorado DeMolay,

we drove over 10 hours to the event.

On October 10th we held the Grand Masters Class in Colorado Springs Masonic Building. This event is a way

for the young men to show off and exemplify their ritual for the Grand Master of Masons in Colorado. This

event is open to the Masonic family, and all visitors are welcome. This is always some of the best ritual DeMolay

has to offer, and it is awe-inspiring to witness the work of the young men.

The State Master Councilor Mason Sellars put out the call for canned food in November. This collection was to

be donated to a rescue mission that he has worked with in the past Fort Collins rescue mission. The young men

of DeMolay and their Sweethearts showed much support and over 2000 pounds of canned food was donated.

The State Master Councilor kept everyone very busy with multiple service projects all year. They ranged from

volunteering at the Eastern Star Masonic Retirement home, Jefferson County Senior Law days, Masonic Child

ID program, various Masonic dinner services and working with Rainbow and Job’s Daughters. I think we had a

minimum of two engagements a week, the majority of which were in Colorado but we did travel to help and visit

other jurisdictions as well. We traveled to California, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and

New Jersey, just to name a few.

Mason Sellars definitely did what we ask every new leader in DeMolay to do. (Work hard and leave your position

with no question that it is better than how you found it) He should be very proud of his accomplishments. Our

outgoing State Master Councilor Mason was elected to the International Congress Secretary office in June. He

will be the first ICS from Colorado in the History of Colorado DeMolay. His travels will take him around the

world for the promotion and betterment of DeMolay.

Sincerely and Fraternally,
