THE KIMCHI FLOWER

The first encounter was confrontation. The taste hits you like a smack to the back of the head. Sweetness, spiciness and saltiness fuse into a whirling rollercoaster. Much as you think the first encounter is the climax of the taste, the second bout of intensity comes like a gnashing wrestling match. This is coupled with a dashing of some texture from the cabbage and chilli pieces. The end leaves one with a lingering spicy flavour and smell that is almost nostalgic and wanting yet refreshing to the senses.

THE 1st ENCOUNTER.

THE 2nd ENCOUNTER. The second encounter was an idea to digitise the crayon image into a more polished symbol of kimchi. Here are 3 explorations.

THE 3rd ENCOUNTER.

This is kimchi now. A further exploration

has turned kimchi into a spiky molecule of intense, climaxing of tastes. From here, I conceived the idea of a wire maze installation below.

In the initial sketch, I wanted to incorporate the opposing elements of danger(spiciness) and a fun(delicious) rollercoaster ride the viewer would experience in tasting kimchi. The installation would transform the taste of kimchi into another level of interaction with the viewer and immerse the viewer physically into a kimchi environment. The steel wires would be a maze for viewers to manouever and get lost in. They could interact with the maze by sitting or cllimbing them.

The Installation: “LIKE KIMCHI IN MY MOUTH”

The installation space was conceived as a safe environment with a dangerous atmosphere, much like the first time one sets eyes on kimchi. The kimchi looks hot and unappealing but the taste is sensational and refreshing. I added in orange and red sponge cones on the floor to emulate the spiciness dancing on one’s tongue when eating kimchi. The wire maze would be wrapped with green nylon rope to give it more tactitlity, same as the textures from the cabbage and chilli. The disruptive wire obstacles and the protruding sponge cones from the floor would emulate the complexity of the taste I felt. Overall, I wanted an immersive engagement with audience, making it seem as though they were on the same journey of experiencing taste with me.

THE AUREOLE OF PLEASURE

THE 1st ENCOUNTER.Vibrant,looping sensuous

crayon pinks and reds, melding into an infinite cycle like

an aureole of

pleasure.

The Colours represent:

Sensual, Sweet, Subtle, Yearning,

Pulsations.

The first encounter is a tingling subtle sweetness that seems to grow with maturing intensity, suddenly, punctuated by bouts of petal texture. Just as you think the taste has reached its maximum potential, one last push of intense sweetness dances on your tongue before petering out into the last lyric of a passionate love song. The lingering fullness of the experience leaves a residue of a fragrant memory.

THE 2nd ENCOUNTER. The second encounter was an idea to digitise the crayon image into a more polished symbol of rose petals.

Oozing liquid from a jam.

THE 3rd ENCOUNTER.

I decided to distill the taste back into its original circular form which best represented the pure and organic essence of the rose jam.

This circle was then used as a motif and inspiration for the installation ideas I had.

INSTALLATION IDEA 1

I used pink crepe paper to simulate the swriling circles on the ceiling of the gallery. The end of this string of paper would dangle suggestively and the viewer would be able to pull and unravel the spirals which would lightly fall over them.

The idea behind it was to allow viewers to feel a delightful sense of the unravelling taste of rose jam descending onto their being.

The fleeting experience of the lightly falling crepe paper represents the subtle and surprising taste of rose jam.

The second idea was based on the idea of doing a projection mapping on the ceiling and floor of the gallery space. The gently undulating spirals of the corollas coupled with the ambient sounds of toned down pulses would emulate the feeling of being immersed in the sweetness of rose jam.

The viewer would be mesmerised by the immersive sights and sounds of the installation and would be invited to bask in the glory of rose jam.

The Installation: “COROLLA VORTEX”

After much feedback regarding enforcing the interactive element even more, I decided to invent the ENKOMPAS V1.0, a machine that could engulf the viewer in a holistic experience of the senses and emulate the sensation of experiencing rose jam.

This project started from a single surviving collage and many more which didn’t survive the years from my childhood.

I really liked finding random stuff and pasting it together to see what textures I would get and what else I could possible do.

Part of this collage was cut off some years ago for another collage I did in junior college. In a way, it felt like I was recycling old memories.

COLLAGE.

The reason why I like collage is something innate to me. I just find it mindlessly joyful to bring together so many random elements to create something new and textural.

This collage was one out of a few draft experiments I did for my final project in junior college based on the Singapore skyline.

This diary(a gift from a cousin) on the left was the common companion in primary school when family couldn’t be a support system at times. When it was so hard to tell them embarrassing things.

I liked to write when I was young, anything that I felt under the sun, I felt comfortable telling it to a blank piece of paper than to anyone.

Writing was naturally a way to express myself and defined who I was as a person. I loved to write stories and I excelled at it.

I loved to read books, collect notebooks. I loved the blank pages staring back at me because they meant so much possibilities. So pristine and full of hope.

WRITINGS.

LOST AND TRYING TO FIND.

So how did writing and collage come together? Both were intrinsic in my formation and understanding of the world. It could seem like a culmination of two things I love best and what more to put it into a project?

However, these things are lost to me now. These things are the joy that I lost along the way as I grew up. Trying to find a way to feel the same and experience it the same way without feeling uncomfortable with the whole process as I have come to now.

Let me explain.

Collage was a random and mindless manner I derived joy from all the banal moments of nothing to do. I am an introvert sometimes and I prefer to be alone. But as I grew older, collage became something that literally didn’t mean anything. And there were other more productive things to do. More things to do as one grew older. Eventually, in year 2 of my graphic design life, collage seemed to take a

back seat for more important discoveries. Composition, typefaces, images. Cleaning up the layout and making it mean more sense. That’s where I think I staretd to lose the last remnant of my joyous young childhood.

On the other hand, writing was definitely more inherent in me than ever. But since the years of objective essay writings, weighing the advantages and dsiadvantages of both points of view, less of that story-telling aspect. I couldn’t write stories like I could before. Furthermore, I used to write down ideas when I first started graphic design but I became a more visual person who was less reliant on word-making.

This is a rediscovery. To go back to my roots and find what made me good at what I did and what gave me the most joy. I feel like I’m losing who I am becoming. Of course, I do not regret coming this far because I have learnt so much more and improved so as to be grateful for

everything. I have lost something and gained something else.

It is time for a reconciliation. A reconciliation of past and present. I need to meet me in the middle. This dictionary is a re-discovery and finding that middle ground. Whether it became true after this whole process, it is still a journey. I hope things will culminate nicely during FYP.

TACTILE BOOKSince I had a rational dictionary. I wanted a more abstract and tactile deliverable to represent the collage side of me. The first idea was to make a tactile book but I decided to change the idea.
