growing in care, love and service.

Congratulations to the graduates and award-winners of St Barnabas’ Theological College, Adelaide, and especially to Deacon Peter Chapman, who was awarded by the Rev’d Canon Jenny Wilson, the prize for the Best Commencing Student!

A word from Fr Brenton (cont’d)

Last month Fr Brenton wrote: As a disciple of Christ we are all compelled to speak up about our faith outside the four walls of our safe space, the church building. We are to take up the challenge that Jesus gave to his disciples when He sent them out to proclaim and preach the word of God. He continues:

St Catherine of Alexandria was only 19 when Emperor Maxentius began persecuting Christians. Fearlessly, the lovely Catherine went to tell him of his cruelty. When he spoke of the pagan gods, she very plainly showed him that they were false.

The emperor could not answer her challenge, so he sent for fifty of his finest philosophers. Catherine convinced them that she was right. Maxentius was furious, and had them all killed. The emperor’s wife and an officer went to her cell to hear her speak. They and 200 soldiers were converted, and for this they were callously put to death. Catherine herself was tortured and put to death.

We may wonder what we were signed up for when our parents had us baptized! Fortunately it is most unlikely today that we will be tortured or put to death! Most of us just want to stumble through life as painlessly as possible. However, if we take our faith seriously, we will face times when we will be called to take a stand or to speak the truth to powers. But the closing words of Luke 21: 5-19 should give us the strength to do so: “You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.”

I suppose we could wish that God would just show up and speak for Himself. It seems that this might be more effective. But according to our sacred story, that’s not the way God has chosen to do things. If we were to wait on God to make His voice and His will audible, there would be a whole lot of silence. Instead, the Holy One turns to

us and hands us the words that make for peace, the words that can set the world free. Whether we like it or not, we’re the ones on stage, because, as one theologian put it, “God does not show up to read God’s own poetry. God has delegated that job. If the poems are to be heard, then someone must dare to climb up on stage, open the book and read.”

Someone, maybe you, must dare to open your mouth and let God will you with His

truth. So, be not afraid. “You can do it”, says the Lord, “you can speak the Gospel.”

Oh yes you can!

Supporting an ABM project Each year at Vestry meeting we select one or more of the worthy projects that the Anglican Board of Mission supports, at home or overseas. Spoiled for choice, what will we choose this year?

Youth engagement of Aboriginal and TSI young people, to attempt to keep them out of the prison system?

Or the Northern Territory Discipleship Track, supporting Christian leaders in remote Aboriginal communities?

The Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, helping address early nutritional needs in underweight children and babies in the troubled Gaza area?

Sustainable development in communities of displaced people in Myanmar?

In our partner diocese of Popondota, PNG: Literacy, language & numeracy? Or Newton Theological College? Disaster Risk reduction, and impact of climate change in

the Solomon Islands? The MU project of positive parenting in the Solomons?

... The list goes on...the needs are great. Preview these projects in the ABM project book (ask Ted for one) or online at https://ww.abmission.org/projects, and be ready to vote at Vestry.

March is BCA box month - please hand in your box to your warden as soon as possible.

Lent Bible Studies

Diocesan study, “ChANge THe CapItAL”: Lectio divina, video & discussion:

What is important in our life and worship?

St Margaret’s, McLaren Vale, Wednesdays 10—11.30 am, Thursdays, 7 pm; St Ann’s, Mondays, 7 pm from Mon 11th

An Ecumenical Bible study, “Compassion”, at Seaford Christian Churches, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10.30—noon , from

Ash Wednesday

The meeting was held at St Ann’s, with Ted Sandercock in the Chair. Matters discussed included the following:

St Philip & St James’ Two offers had been made for the vacant land north of the church. One of them was under consideration.

Clergy Roster Fr Simon was on leave, and visiting China. While we were short of clergy it was an opportunity to revise and work with the Prayer, Praise & Proclamation service. Fr Bob Hupfeld is assisting Fr Paul Devenport for six months in his large pastoral district of the Riverland.

Safer Ministry Those needing to update their Safer Ministry training need to notify Jane as soon as possible. On-line updates are not yet available for us.

Farewell to Bishop John A farewell will be held on Saturday 4th May at Tyndale College, Murray Bridge. Numbers need to be ascertained by the beginning of April.

The Strategic Directions workshop on 11th February had invited Fr David McDougall from St Saviour’s, Glen Osmond. He had been an inspirational speaker.

Treasurer’s Report (graph, below)

Snippets from Western Fleurieu Anglican Council Meeting , 12th February

Southern Vales Pastoral Care Workers e support the wonderful team of Pastoral Care Workers (otherwise known as Chaplains) in our local schools, with our Gold Coin Collection on the first Sunday of the month and our sausage sizzle at the Quarry Markets in October and November.

The 2019 Pastoral Care workers will be commissioned at a service at McLaren Vale Uniting Church, Main Road, McLaren Vale, on Sunday 24th March, at 4 pm. We are invited to their commissioning, and to a meal after the service. This is a golden opportunity to support them, to meet them and to hear their stories. Please let Ted know by Wed. 20th March if you can go.

Budget 2019 The treasurer noted that budgeting for costs of stipends and on-costs did not give the full picture of the cost of running the churches. Repairs and Maintenance Funds cover some other expenses. In 2018, $21,000 had been spent on maintenance and liabilities. Our primary need is to meet the cost of the stipends for our clergy. Diocesan targets Last year the Diocesan targets (Home Mission Fund and Ministry Development Fund) had not been fully subscribed. In 2019, combining Southern Vales with Yankalilla/Delamere, we would need to find $1,800 for each fund. The Treasurer suggested paying $100 a month to help to meet the challenge. Council suggested that better publicity about what the money was used for would encourage support. We could invite speakers. Jeff McHugh to be invited to the next WFA meeting to discuss the proposed Diocesan budget.

Synod Suggestions were made concerning the running of Synod 2019: while the speaker in 2018 had been excellent, there had not been time enough left for the once-a-year opportunity to discuss Diocesan matters or answer questions. This should be a matter of priority at our synods. A shared dinner would have been a good chance for meeting others and socialising.

WFA Peter Filsell spoke about the very real difficulties of op-erating as one pastoral district: there were some mat-ters that those at the southern end of the district should be able to deal with themselves. AC

Next meeting: Tuesday 12th March, 7 pm, St Ann’s

Chris Oxenham (PC worker) has asked if any of our congregations might help a family at Old Noarlunga Primary School by cooking some meals for school. Chris is asking for five meals for a family of five. Some ideas: spaghetti and meat balls, lasagna, quiche, chicken dish?

Worship We continue to enjoy the flexibility of having chairs instead of pews, and the sense of space and colour that they bring. They are angled at present. They have unexpectedly brought about a most un-Anglican phenomenon—the church now fills from the front instead of the back rows!

Family services continue to be well received. They are more participatory than the traditional service and it is encouraging to see so many people prepared to be involved and taking part. We have also enjoyed the Prayer, Praise and Proclamation service which Peter Chapman and Jane Cuthbert prepared, and welcome the opportunity for individuals to ask for healing or other prayers during the last hymn.

Theological studies award Some members of the congregation attended the service for the Commencement of Term for St Barnabas’ Theological College, in St Peter’s Cathedral, Adelaide (p. 1). We were proud to see Canon Jenny Wilson give Peter Chapman the award for Best Commencing Student, and proud too to claim a connection with Deborah Jeanes, winner of the prize for Ministry, who worships from time to time at St Ann’s with her husband’s family. We wish Peter well in his continuing studies and ministry.

Lent Bible studies will be held at St Ann’s on Monday nights at 7 pm during Lent, using the Diocesan study “Change the Capital”, with a reflective study period, a filmed discussion and commentary, and questions. As Shrove Tuesday falls on our normal Friends meeting day, the March meeting of Friends of St Ann will be held on Monday 4th March.

Maintenance The prickle team has maintained their sterling work caring for the church grounds, but will be glad when the corellas find other trees elsewhere to tear apart. The tape on our 20-year old hall curtains has reached a point of sudden disintegration, and we are grateful to

Margaret Cale for starting work on replacing them.

Lenten Suppers We look forward to our annual festival of Lenten Suppers and speakers, and are glad that St Nicholas’ will host one at SCC (see p. 4). This year we have two speakers from St Ann’s congregation: the first is Peter Wilkin, an ex-commando who served in the Falklands and speaks of the effect of war on servicemen, and the other is Trish Frith who, as I write, is in India with her daughter Julie visiting an amazing village in northern India. We have missed her and will be glad to see her return.

Gatherings Granny Annie’s continues to be a popular meeting place on Thursday mornings, and we look forward to quieter times now that our over-active smoke alarm has been dealt with—thank you Jamie Wells! Waving a broom at a screaming alarm had become quite a feature of Granny Annie’s! A sport we could all join in. Thanks Julia!

Our Family Tea for February was an occasion to celebrate David Nitschke’s 70th birthday (below) and to welcome their friends visiting from Bendigo. Friends are always welcome! AC

News from St Margaret’s, McLaren Vale

What is usually a fairly quiet time has, in fact been much busier and definitely livelier than other years at this time.

Worship Our attendance at Sunday services has increased to an average of more than twenty, which completely mystifies, but excites at the same time...God is answering our prayers and there is much more smiling going on!

We are having two laity led services in February as Fr Brenton attends other churches in our parish. It is so good to see more folk supporting our laity led services now— maybe word of the delicious goodies Jac Hocking bakes for us on these occasions is spreading? God works powerfully always when two or three are gathered together in His name, whether it is Holy Eucharist or any other form of worship. His love will shine through all devout, Christ-centred celebrations.

Pastoral Care Visiting the sick and infirm either in residential care, hospitals or private homes continues to bless the receiver and the giver. Janet Tassie has returned home and is getting assistance with personal care and Meals-on-Wheels. Jill Ribbons has moved to Colton Court and would love any visitors in her new sunny blue room. Jean Griffen is also in Colton Court, looking spry and cheerful, and Sister Beverly and I invited her to Jill's room to share Holy Eucharist with us. It was a lovely impromptu gathering.

I warmly welcome Sister Beverly to accompany me during the week in sharing Holy Eucharist with those

who can't get to church. Please tell Fr Brenton or either church warden if there is anyone you know who would like a visit and Holy Communion.

We welcome Lorna McGaffin back, now well enough to come on Sundays. Thank you Fran Pettigrew, who brings Lorna and makes sure flowers and food are organised each Sunday. It is also good to see Eileen Cook, who is venturing out in this milder warm weather.

Lorraine is delighted to be in her brand new unit after living with her daughter for many months while her place was a built. Happy housewarming Lorraine!

On site The church is looking chipper with a new coat of paint, and we look forward to further improvements when the cherry picker carries the painter to the higher regions, to repaint the eaves. Old St Maggie’s is starting to smile!

Judith Wells has spent some hours sorting and cleaning the vestry cupboards. Everything looks neat and tidy, thank you Judith. We are grateful that she has taken on Sacristan duties and sorted out the vestry. Her retirement is starting to look quite busy!

“Maggie’s Mates” The Friends and Guild of St Margaret's, now dubbed “Maggie’s Mates” has been reinstated (as I said in the last report) and we are looking for some enthusiastic members with some happy ideas. The more who participate, the less everyone has to do and the load is spread around. It's always a cheerful gathering, so put your thinking caps on and bring some ideas for things to do, large or small, to our next meeting (27th March, 11.15 am)

Outreach Our first Hotdog Night, showing hospitality to the

backpackers at the hostel, is on Friday, 1st March. We start at 5.30 pm and are usually finished between 6.30-7.00 pm. This is our "welcome to the district" night for the vineyard workers as vintage begins. While the East Timorese group have been staying at the hostel for some time, it is still a simple way of sharing a little of ourselves with newcomers and making them feel welcome.

Fr Brenton has survived well while Fr Simon explored northern China. Thank you Fr Brenton and Lyn for your cheerful, hardworking and selfless work in our parish.

Giving thanks to God for St Maggie’s and all she gives to us! Wardens Greg John & Julia Drought

Food, fun and fellowship go together so well! L: Greg John marvels at his first ever Pavlova! and R: the indefatiguable Jac Hocking with her delicious heart-shaped cookies and a “Love your enemies” message.

News from St Nicholaws’, Seafored

Ministry We were fortunate to have Fr Peter Simmons minster to us on the first Sunday in February, looking very carefree as a retired clergyman should! We had an amazing shared lunch following the service with enough food to keep everyone happy. Deacon Peter Chapman took our next two services of Prayer, Praise and Proclamation, which is now becoming a regular occurrence and a much looked forward to service at St Nicholas’. We rearrange the church seating into semicircles of chairs—no sitting at the back for us— and all participate in Peter’s insightful and interactive service. Lots of great singing too!

Youth Worship The Youth Led Worship this month was formed around the Old Testament story of Joseph and his brothers, and the Gospel reading from Luke. In place of the Old Testament readings and as their drama for the service, Issy and Brenton enacted an updated version of the Genesis story of Joseph, showing the bad decisions made from jealousy, and how this was used by God to send Joseph into Egypt to save his country from famine. With the theme that “Love is an all or nothing proposition”, both Joseph and Jesus make it clear—no matter how annoyed and angry people make us, how upset or sad they make us– we must love them and only do good for them, the same way our Father God loves all of us and gives us many blessings and good things. Lots of great songs, as usual, and concluding with a short communion service by Fr Simon assisted by both Brenton and Issy.

Fellowship Well the holidays are truly over, and it’s back to business. At our meeting in February the Fellowship planned our activities for the first six months – no chance of being idle with this group!! Our next meeting in March will see us making our giving envelopes for the next year: supported by tea and biscuits we stamp sort and stick with a vengeance! In April our meeting will be a week earlier (12th)to enable us to make palm crosses as we usually do. Lunch will be in the café at 12.30 pm. A $10 Roast of the Day is available and bookings are required (next column).

We are planning a High Tea on the 4th May at $10 per head, a games and card afternoon in June, and a Quiz afternoon in July. (There must have been something in the water at our last meeting!)

Lent A Lenten Supper is in the planning for Thursday 28th March at 6 pm – Sr Bernie, formerly placed at SEM, moved away, and now retired, is back with us. She will speak at the supper about her time and work in Queensland. Lovely soups, fruit and bread as usual will

follow a short evening service.

Our Lenten Bible study will be the one offered by the Brisbane Catholic community and we will postpone the diocesan study and use it between Easter and Pentecost instead. Studies will be on Wednesdays and Fridays during Lent, commencing Ash Wednesday, 6th March, 10.30 – 12.00 noon and Friday 8th March 10.30 – 12 noon. The program theme is “Compassion” and involves reflection and sharing on the Lenten Sunday gospels and their invitation to us in our daily lives. An Ecumenical study which always proves to be insightful, lively and interesting!

SCC (SEM) The Constitution is about finished and out for approval to various Heads of Churches. Once it is finalized, a special meeting of all congregations will be arranged to approve our new way forward.

Mothers’ Union

On February 4th we six members met at St Nicholas’ for morning tea and chat time. At about 10.30 am,

Trish Frith, Trish McDonald, Doreen Richards and Joanie Rawlings climbed into Helen Cook’s “BIG” Vehicle, using her “Caravan Step” to make it easier. With instructions from her Navigator – a GPS Aid – that repeatedly reminded her of where to go, we set off. Our purpose was to visit Betty and Percy Leske in residence at their new accommodation – Resthaven Aberfoyle Park.

It is a wonderfully appointed new facility. They have spacious rooms next door to each other. Betty had arranged to gather in a sitting area near their rooms.

After catching up with all the news we held our service. All too soon it was time to leave as it was meal time for the residents. Our meeting closed with us joining together in The Grace.

Our next meeting will be the AGM at St Nicholas on March 4th at 9.30am followed by planning for the year’s programme. Helen Cook, Secretary

There will be a thanksgiving service for the CFS on March 31st at 11 am at the Rapid Bay CFS Station (up Cole Rd, behind the Delamere shops). This will be a combined service for Yankalilla and Delamere as it is the 5th Sunday. The service will be followed by a BBQ lunch, and people are asked to bring a salad or sweet to share, and drinks.

Parishioners Profile: Ron & Lynn King

We both hail from the same town, Bootle, near Liverpool in England, though we didn’t meet until about age 20. At that time Ron was driving buses and Lynn was a control officer for the Liverpool Fire Brigade.

In 1971 we married in the local Catholic parish church, bought a house and continued life. In 1973 events in the UK, the miners’ strike and government behaviour led us to believe that it was time to move on. After a lot of deliberation we decided on Australia, so on the 28th June 1973 we sent in our application to Australia House in London. The timing was significant in that the price for assisted passage went from £10 to £41 as of the first of July. As our application was dated before the end of June we were accepted at the lower price, making us amongst the last of the “£10 poms”.

Originally we wanted to go to Perth but the powers that be said we should go to Sydney, and as they were paying, that’s where we went. Lynn’s sister and her husband had emigrated to Wollongong a year before, which partly

Lady Day

On Monday 25th March, Lady Day (the festival of the Annunciation), here will be a MU celebration at St John the Baptist, Murray Bridge; 10.30 for 11 am service, with a guest speaker from Anglican Community Care. Bring lunch, and any contributions to the trading table.

Congratulations to...Fr Peter Randle and Heather who recently celebrated their 50th wedding Anniversary, for which they returned to St Cuthbert’s, Prospect, where they were married. The service was taken by Archdeacon Lyn McRostie and there was a celebratory cake at morning tea.

helped the decision making. Lynn found work as a secretary and Ron moved into sales. Daughters Jennifer and Natalie were born in 1975 and 1981, by which time we had moved house often and were then in the western suburbs of Sydney.

Having itchy feet, we decided to make another attempt to go to Perth, but again a lack of employment made that an unrealistic choice. We settled on Adelaide and moved here in 1989 – just in time for the “recession we had to have”. Thank you Mr Keating. Lynn was able to find work but Ron found it hard and eventually took on a job driving coaches for a small local company. In 1991 Lynn started a temp job as receptionist for the Anglican Church office in North Adelaide. A three week temp job lasted 14 years, latterly as PA to Archbishop Ian George. This was followed by seven years with SA Health in the office of the Executive Director for Mental Health.

In 2012 we both decided we’d had enough, and retired. Once more having itchy feet we sold our house, bought a caravan and took off to see the country. We spent three and a half years travelling and doing house/farm sitting mostly in S. Queensland and NSW.
