W/mK as well as a high thermal storage capacity of 2100

J/kg provide you with significant energy savings on heating

in winter and cooling in summer.

2. Impact resistance

The combination of impact resistant plaster baseboard

and 8-10-mm render makes GUTEX’s external thermal

insulation composite system extremely impact resistant.

3. Versatility

The availability of the plaster baseboards in many different

sizes means the perfect match for your specific dimen-

sional requirements is always on hand.

4. Economy

Thanks to their homogenous single-ply construction, you

can install GUTEX insulating boards in a single work step,

in up to 160-mm thickness. They fasten via stainless steel

power staples to the substrate or framed construction,

making your installation work quick and economical.

Fastening

– GUTEX Thermowall/-gf fastens directly to the wood studs or over sheathing in timber framed constructions.

– When installing over sheathing, GUTEX Thermowall/-gf has to be fastened to the studs.

– For smaller GUTEX boards, the minimum required thickness of the timber studs is 38 mm; for larger boards it is 50 mm.

– Fasten with wide-back, stainless steel staples (from Haubold, Poppers, Senco, Bea or Prebena) or GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws).

– Minimum fastener length = board thickness + sheathing or boarding + min. penetration depth

– Minimum penetration depth of wide-back staples is ≥ 30 mm

– Minimum penetration depth of GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws) is ≥ 25 mm

– For overhead fixing you must use GUTEX Thermowall (tongue and groove) of 60 mm or thicker and GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube. It is necessary to use a supporting substructure (at least 60/40 mm) with a maximum dimension between axes of 40 cm.

Space between fasteners– Wide-back staples A ≤ 100 mm for GUTEX Thermowall A ≤ 125 mm for GUTEX Thermowall-gf

– GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws) B ≤ 250 mm

– Maintain the following distances from the edges: Solid wood: distance from edge to staple/screw

= 5 x fastener diameter/thickness Thermowall/-gf: distance from edge to staple

= 7 x staple thickness

– Max. on-centre distance between timber studs

40/60/80/100/120 mm 62.5 cm

Joints

– The offset of small boards must be (C) ≥ 30 cm

– Maximum two consecutive joints in one field

– If installing straight-edged boards (just butted), the joints must fall on the timber studs or cross members.

– For larger boards, the staples can be placed on either side of the joints with their widths parallel to the joints.

– For larger boards GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws) should be installed directly into the joints

– To prevent the boards from moving while you are fastening them, begin at the middle of the board.

For best results, see the General Installation Guidelines on pages 8-9.

For solid wood substrates, such as cross laminated ply-wood, glulam wood walls, or mineral substrates (masonry, etc.), it is possible to use just a single course of GUTEX Thermowall (up to 160 mm). If thicker insulation is re-quired, a second layer may be installed in combination with GUTEX Thermosafe-homogen.

Fastening to wood substrates

– Use GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws) or stainless steel wide-back staples.

– Minimum fastener length for wood substrates = board thickness + min. penetration depth

– Minimum penetration depth of wide-back staples is ≥ 30 mm

– Minimum penetration depth of GUTEX Thermowall Holzschraube (wood screws) ≥ 25 mm

Spacing between fasteners

– Wide-back staples: A ≤ 170 mm B ≤ 370 mm

Fastening to mineral substrates

– For the fastening of the boards to mineral substrates, we recommend the use of GUTEX Klebe- and Spach-telputz, an adhesive base coat (Coverage will vary de-pending on the condition of the substrate).

– Once the boards are in place, use GUTEX WDVS Spreiz-/Thermoschraubdübel (thermally-decoupled screw expansion fasteners) to secure them and GUTEX Verschlusselemente (plugs) to eliminate thermal bridging.

– The substrate must be sound to ensure the system is strong and reliable.

– Minimum penetration depth of the GUTEX WDVS-Thermoschraubdübel (thermally decoupled screw expansion fasteners) is ≥ 30 mm

– Minimum fastener length = board thickness + old render + min. 30 mm

For best results, see the General Installation Guidelines on pages 8-9.

Installation of the fibreboards

– Always store the boards in a dry place. Only install the boards if they are dry.

– Install GUTEX Sockelabschlußleiste (stop beads) or comparable stops at the bottom of the GUTEX Thermowall/-gf boards adjacent to the foundation. It is necessary to cut off the last board's bottom groove.

– Provide space between the GUTEX Sockelabschlußlei-ste (stop beads) for expansion, movement, etc. GUTEX Sockelabschlussleistenverbinder (stop bead connectors) are ideal, pg. 14.

– GUTEX Thermowall/-gf is not intended for use below the ground

– Install the boards, staggering them by a min. of 30 cm between parallel joints.

– Avoid cross joints.

General Installation Guidelines

– Prevent air circulation behind the boards by sealing the joints with GUTEX Fugendichtband (joint tape).

– Install the boards so the joints are tight.

– Installation of insulation in two layers, is to be performed around windows as shown below:

GUTEX Thermosafe-homogen

GUTEX Thermowall

GUTEX Thermowall

– Minimum board thickness for exterior walls is 40 mm– Minimum board thickness for reveals is 20 mm– Minimum useable board size is 20 x 40 cm– Joints with adjacent elements of the building must be

tightly sealed against driving rain and wind.– Hollows or buckles in the exterior surface are to be

smoothed out via sanding or planing prior to applying the render.

– Board joints of 2 mm or less are acceptable; joints of 2-5 mm are to be filled with a suitable material, such as GUTEX Fugendicht (joint sealer). Fill joints greater than 5 mm with GUTEX Thermowall/-gf.

– If installing over vertically or horizontally changing substrates, it is necessary to use expansion/movement joints. Details are available at www.gutex.de

– The GUTEX render system is to be installed no later than 4 weeks after the GUTEX Thermowall/-gf is in-stalled. If this is not possible, cover the exposed wall with a tarpaulin, making sure air can circulate under the tarpaulin.

– Protect installed fibreboards from direct exposure to moisture.

– If loose insulation fill is to be used (typically blown into the building block cavities), filling must be completed before the render is applied.

– GUTEX Thermosafe-homogen is not a suitable substrate for render!

Fastening– Suitable fastening products: GUTEX Thermo-

wall Holzschraube (wood screws), GUTEX WDVS Thermoschraubdübel (thermally-decoupled screw expansion fasteners) or wide-back, stainless steel staples (back width 27 mm, min. 1.8-mm gauge wire).

– Fasten 20-mm thick side reveal insulation lining with either 60-mm Ø plastic disc fasteners and stainless steel screws or stainless steel wide-back staples.

– Use the recommended quantity of fasteners.– Only fasteners installed in a solid substrate will hold

effectively.– Screw the insulation fasteners into the board, so they are

flush with the board surface.– Counter-sink the wide-back staple 3-5 mm into the

surface of the boards.– Minimum penetration depth for the wide-back staples is

≥ 30 mm– Minimum penetration depth of GUTEX Thermowall

Holzschraube (wood screws) is ≥ 25 mm– Minimum penetration depth of the GUTEX WDVSTher-

moschraubdübel (thermally decoupled screw expansion fasteners) is ≥ 30 mm

Bottom edges adjacent to foundationBottom edge of fibreboard not properly fitted with stop bead. Severely damaged board edges. Missing sealing strips. Ingression of moisture causes the boards to swell, cracks to form in the render, and produces mould and fungus.

Window sillsOverhang ≤ 30 mm; absence of sealing strips Moisture from driving rain and wind, brown discolouration of render, mould and fungus and swelling of boards.

Vent, exhaust openingsOpenings in the exterior walls that are sealed with tape do not provide the render with a suitable surface for adhesion. The render may blister, flake and crack, leading to moisture ingress. Seal joints with GUTEX Fugendicht (sealing strip).

Staggering of the jointsDistance between parallel joints is less than 30 cm; the joints' spaces are too large. Increased structural stress may cause cracks in the render, moisture ingress.

CornersBoard joints insufficiently tight seeping in of render into the joints, thermal bridging, visibility of joints through the render, increased likelihood of mould, fungus and cracking.

FastenersIf fasteners that are not suitable for composite thermal insulation systems are used the fastenersmay act as thermal bridges, rust orcause surface marking.

Transitions from masonry to wood structureBoth render stop and expansion/movement bead (settlement joint) absent. Buckling due to settling, formation of cracks caused by movement, ingression of moisture.

Base coatToo thinly applied; min. thickness of 4-5 mm is required. The base coat is unable to accommodate stress; cracks, flaking, buckling occur.

Improper Installation and Consequences

Joints with other structural elementsFoamed joints are too wide absence of driving rain protection, moisture ingression possible, cracking and visibility of fasteners and insulation joints through the render.

GUTEX Render System

2. Base coat

The base coat can be applied wet on wet or in two steps (base and reinforcement mesh). To attain a minimum thick-ness of 5 mm and keep the reinforcement lath in the outer third of the base coat, we recommend applying the base coat in two steps.

3. Reinforcement

Is necessary to prevent cracks in the render. To accommodate movement caused by thermal activity, etc., the reinforcement mesh must be applied over the entire surface and the segments must overlap each other.

Splash water protective coat

With the use of a supplemental splash water protective coat, GUTEX Thermowall/-gf can be installed right down to the ground.

Render protects buildings against moisture and other

environmental influences. GUTEX’s render system has

been specially designed, tested and certified to meet the

toughest possible demands. Essential to the functional re-

liability of the render system is the compatibility of the

render and the plasterboard.

4. Primer

Regulates the ability of the substrate to absorb, and prevents the quick hardening of the final render coat. It also serves as a bonding surface and provides the base coat with its first protection against the weather. When the primer is applied on the base coat, it may be left for a period of time (over winter) before you apply the final render coat.

5.1 / 5.2 Final render

Provides additional protection against the elements while lending surfaces a uniform appearance. GUTEX Mineralfar-be PV, a mineral paint offers exceptionally good protection against mould and mildew.

Insulation against the heat in summerGUTEX wood insulation boards protect living areas from high temperatures, in particular, areas

under roofs. Thanks to their high thermal storage capacity, they effectively dampen the flow of warmth from exterior to interior areas. Wood has a specific thermal storage capacity of 2100 J/kgK, which is the highest amongst all insulation materials.

Made in GermanyFor more than 80 years, GUTEX, a family owned and operated company, has manufactured

insulation boards at its plant in Waldshut-Tiengen, which is located in the southern Black Forest. All GUTEX insulation boards carry the CE and U marks and are produced according to the current applicable standards. Moreover, the German building authorities have issued a European Technical Approval for GUTEX’s Thermowall External Thermal Insulation Composite System.

User friendlyGUTEX insulation boards are manufactured according to the highest quality standards and

are characterised by absolutely minimum dimensional deviation. This, combined with the detailed installation instructions provided by the manufacturer, makes working with GUTEX products a pleasure.

Environmental compatibility The raw material for all GUTEX insulation boards comes from wood that is locally harvested and

grown using sustainable forestry management practices. GUTEX exclusively uses untreated spruce and fir chips and shavings, which are by-products obtained from other timber manufacturing processes. All GUTEX insulation boards are tested and certified as biologically safe and compatible with other building materials (natureplus© seal of quality).

Fire protectionGUTEX wood fibre insulation boards easily comply with fire protection regulations. Various individual

certificates of approval are available for F30-B to F90-B fire resistance ratings for roof and wall structures.

Your dealer:

Pleasant indoor environment GUTEX wood fibre insulation boards are vapour permeable (μ = 3), regulating the living environ-

ment with their ability to absorb and release up to 15% of their weight in moisture without the loss of their insulation capacity.

Insulation against the cold in winterEffective insulation reduces heating bills and creates a comfortable living environment in winter.

Due to their low thermal conductivity (λD = 0.037 W/mK), GUTEX insulating wood fibreboards provide optimum insulation in winter, protecting the interior of houses from heat loss and ingression of cold.

Acoustic insulationThe open-pore structure of GUTEX wood fibreboards and their high absorption volume

contribute to their ability to deliver superb soundproofing against airborne and impact noise.

Recyclability GUTEX wood fibreboards are completely recyclable and, provided wood preservatives have

not contaminated them, can be disposed of at the nearest recovery centre.
