New Zealand Market Background

Now that the Electricity suppliers have announced and started introducing severe penalty tariffs for poor power factor and excessive peak demand, more and more end-users and their Facilities Managers (if they have them) are looking at ways to trim their monthly electricity costs. To some extent, this has been a driver in the switch to LED lighting. At the same time, harmonic distortion on the supply caused by a variety of devices/loads, adds to the lowering of power quality, the increase of applied power factor tariffs and the shorter life of equipment that is vulnerable to the harmonic spikes and heating effects caused by harmonic currents.

Traditional approach to managing poor power factor

For over fifty years, the accepted way to compensate for poor power factor caused by lagging loads from (largely) inductive devices such as motors, transformers and other inductors has been to use power factor capacitors. Usually oil filled, these devices are installed around New Zealand and are built into switchboards or are supplied in a standalone purpose built cabinet located in the switch room. By and large, this equipment has performed well when properly maintained. What many of these systems/installations haven’t done well is keep up with the changing load situations in many installations. Specifically, a power factor correction system installed as recently as five years ago may not be designed or equipped to handle the very diverse loads that exist in many buildings or sites. The result is premature component failure and increased risk of fire and penalty tariffs being imposed.

Occupational Safety and Health, Plant and Equipment Safety

With the tightening of OSH requirements, particularly over the last few months, there is more focus coming onto equipment that is stressed and at risk of failure with safety and environmental repercussions. Never before has the need for detailed and competent inspection, testing, repair, total replacement been greater. Risk mitigation or removal is a paramount concern to Facility Managers, Building owners, Insurers and government agencies.And the problem is.....There are very few true experts in this field. Whilst most electrical companies will understand the basic requirements of power factor, few have the resources, test equipment, knowledge, experience and backup parts and technical advice to check and diagnose current issues and perhaps more importantly, potential issues.

Expertise in New Zealand

For 37 years New Zealand had a company that did nothing else but design, manufacture, supply power capacitors and power factor systems to the New Zealand market. Considerable expertise was built up by this company and its people, firstly as Metalect Industries and then as Ampcontrol New Zealand limited. Unfortunately, the whole operation was closed, the equipment and plant sold or mothballed offshore with the result that the expertise, market history and momentum was apparently lost. The last system built and the last parts supplied were dispatched from the factory in Riri Street Rotorua in the last quarter of 2015.

What of the people?

After several months of inactivity four senior people of the previous two companies are back in the business under the leadership of Allan Ramson in a new venture called kVArCorrect. Located still in Rotorua, with a range of new system designs and imported components, the company focus (as the company name implies) is strongly on the management of power factor. The company has invested in a comprehensive range of test equipment specifically for “all things power factor related” and is actively looking for Electrical Maintenance Provider companies to partner with to address the power factor needs of the country. kVArCorrect has the people, the technology, the components, the specific New Zealand market knowledge and history to fully support Maintenance providers in their activities on any site in New Zealand.

Multicond one-phase and three-phase power capacitors for power factor correction are developed for networks with harmonic load. Multicond-UHPC power capacitors stand out through their combined safety concept of a self-healing effect and all-phase internal overpressure disconnector. In low volt-age networks, inadmissibly high voltage peaks up to 3 times the rated voltage can occur through switching procedures. If these loads lead to flashovers in the dielec-tric, self-healing takes effect.

The capacitor remains fully functional as this happens. The all-phase internal over-pressure disconnector starts to work if the gas amount released by the many self-healing procedures causes a specific internal pressure. The lid of the aluminum cas-ing bends slightly and the fuse disconnects the capacitor from the network.

Note: Depending on the network voltage and when used in detuned systems, a cor-respondingly higher capacitor rated voltage must be selected.

SmartVAR Modular System

The SmartVar system is an Automatic Power Factor Correction System designed for economic and proven precise control of system power factor on commerical and in-dustrial facilities so as to minimise or in most cases, eliminate penalty charges imposed by electricity supply companies for poor power factor. The system features high quality capacitors and componentry throughout. These components, along with optional MCB protection and rugged capacitor rated contactors are mounted so as to be maintainable with a minimum of system dismantling required to upgrade or replace. Careful thought has been applied to air flow requirements and where required, heat shields and air flow deflectors are employed to ensure that cooling air flows where it is actually required, not just where the easiest flow path through a cabinet naturally occurs. The design and build quality is reflected in the warranties offered.
