As the only supplier worldwide Xtend EcoLight offers a complete portfolio of energy saving lamps to replace T8 and LED tubes. The products are based on energy-saving high-performance T5 tubes “Made in Germany”. In terms of the combination of light quantity, life span, light distribution, light quality, ergonomics, energy consumption and cost price, they are far superior to the T8 tubes and other possible T8 substitutes.

The Xtend EcoLight products replace the existing lamps with the aim of achieving considerable efficiency improvements. While retaining a more than sufficient light quantity and optimum lighting quality. The required light quantity is the basis for every decision when it comes to lamps. Energy-efficient lamps create this light quantity with the smallest possible energy usage. The aspect of operating efficiency includes the following specification which is very easy to determine for every lamp: how much do 1000 lumens cost per 100 burning hours (€/1000 lm/100 h)?*

The average lifespan of fluorescent tubes is usually limited due to the wear and tear of their filaments and that of LED tubes due to weakening light emitting diodes and the temperature management. Most manufacturers specify the average life span of their lamps, i. e. the number of hours after which 50 % of the lamps still illuminate but de facto it is important to know how much light they still emit at that time.

Since 13th April 2012, fluorescent tubes with the light colours 33-640 and 54-765 (2-band fluorescent tubes) have been banned throughout Europe due to their poor light quality and colour reproduction. They are substituted, for example, with 3-band fluorescent tubes with an improved colour reproduction index. The colour reproduction index Ra specifies the quality of the colour reproduction of objects which are lit with a light, preferably Ra = 100.

The ergonomics of light is an important criterion in the evaluation of lighting. Ergonomic light creates a pleasant atmosphere and does not dazzle, glimmer or flicker. It is a requirement for efficient working and prevents damage to human health.

The legislative authority has covered important environmental aspects for products in directives and regulations. They always apply if products are „marketed“ in Germany resp. Europe. The ErP directive is gradually prohibiting more and more inefficient lamps, the WEEE directive regulates the disposal of electronic devices and the RoHS directive regulates the avoidance of the use of dangerous substances.

The European Community is calling for the use of environmentally-friendly fluorescent tubes with the regulation (EC) no. 245/2009 dated 18th March 2009.

The EU Commission carried out two studies prior to the adoption of the regulation in which the technical, ecological and economic aspects of lamps were analysed. The studies proved in detail that the power consumption can be considerably lowered with retrofitting to energy-efficient lamps. Xtend EcoLight lamps fully comply with the requirements as they are of energy efficiency class A.

Design and components

Xtend EcoLight energy-saving substitutes consist of a T5 fluorescent tube encased in an external lamp shell. The end caps contain the ballast electronics.

T5 high-performance fluorescent tubeThe T5 fluorescent tubes used are some of the most efficient and economic illuminants with a light yield of up to 105 lumens per watt. The various product lines are distinguished by the average lifespan of the inner fluorescent tubes.

Ballast based on IC designThe integrated electronic ballast has a preheat function that ignites the fluorescent tube with a preheating time, which varies depending on product line. Plus multiple heating and surge protection functions, as well as the programmed end-of-life function for maximum operational safety. The old, existing ballast in the light is automatically taken out of operation and replaced with the considerably more energy-efficient, integrated ballast system of the Xtend EcoLight substitute.

External lamp shellThe T5 tube is encased in an external shell, which ensures optimal temperature and the best-possible light yield of the illuminant. The standard design of the external lamp shell for the lengths 590 mm, 900 mm and 1200 mm is clear glass. It is also available in polycarbonate, e. g. for use in the food industry. The external lamp shell for the 1500 mm Xtend EcoLight comes in polycarbonate due to its smaller weight as standard.

Operating conditions

Here’s how it works:

Luminaires with G13 socket and conventional ballast:Simply exchange existing tubes for Xtend EcoLight XLi, XLid or SLi

They start saving energy immediately when used instead of standard T8 tubes. You can choose the right Xtend EcoLight performance system depending on the amount of light required. Potential energy savings of between 20 % and 60 % depending on system performance.

Luminaires with G13 socket and electronic ballast:Converting the luminaire, then replacing the existing tube with Xtend EcoLight XLi, XLid or SLi

Converting a luminaire is always an option if you decided to use Xtend EcoLight permanently. A specialist electrical contractor must carry out the conversion but it is not particularly laborious. However, before the conversion you must be sure that the selected Xtend EcoLight is really ideal for your requirements. After re-cabling, simply insert the Xtend EcoLight into the luminaire and enjoy energy savings of between 10 % and 40 %, depending on the selected system performance and amount of light, compared with the T8 tube that you previously operated with electronic ballast.

Relative light distribution Xtend EcoLight with and without reflector:

The polar diagram shows the luminous intensity of Xtend EcoLight, and also the relative radiated power of the illuminant per solid angle. By comparison of the both curves the different light distribution by lamps with or without reflectors is made clear so you can choose the appropriate model types for your requirements.

The emission patterns in green applies for all Xtend EcoLight model types with integrated reflector. By these lamps is about 92 % of the light output in the lower half-space of the lamp. Choose model types with integrated reflector, when the luminaries don‘t have functioning reflectors and the ceiling doesn‘t have to be illuminated.

The emission patterns in blue applies for all Xtend EcoLight model types without an integrated reflector. About 45 % of the light output is in the above and about 55 % of the light output in the below half-space of the lamp. Choose model types without integrated reflector, when the luminaries have functioning reflectors, so the light can be directed downwards, or if the whole room inclusive the ceiling have to be illuminated.

For private homes and companies with shorter operating times, for whom the purchase of illuminants with a very long average lifespan is not cost-effective:

.At home, e. g. in garages and basements, as an energy- saving substitute for the many existing T8 or even T12 fluorescent tubes. Here we recommend the neutral coolwhite tone.

.For illumination or backlighting in living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and corridors, we recommend the warmwhite tone, which is most similar to the brightness of light bulbs.

Both standard light colours offer illumination without humming or flickering and fast lamp ignition with minimal ignition time.

A particularly cheap and interesting alternative for companies with short to normal working or operating hours, e. g.

T5 high-performance fluorescent tubeThe T5 fluorescent tubes used are some of the most efficient and economic illuminants with a light yield of up to 105 lumens per watt. They have an average lifespan of 24,000 hours.

Electronic ballast and cableThe ballast can be re-cabled quickly and integrated instead of the existing conventional ballast. It has a preheat function for gentle ignition and thus ensures a longer lifespan of the fluorescent tubes. The correct cables for conversion are also included.

SpacersEach T5 tube has two spacers that reduce the socket of the existing G13 of the luminaire to the G5 standard of the tubes and equalize the difference in length. They are attached at both ends of the tube so that the tube then fits precisely into the existing G13 socket.

For all fields of application where louvre luminaires with T8 fluorescent tubes are operated: louvre luminaires are commonly used in office spaces e.g. as an installation in suspended ceilings. Almost every company in every industry has office workspaces so louvre luminaires are extremely widespread. The URS-Series is designed to enable the sim-ple conversion of louvre luminaires from T8 to T5.

But as well as louvre luminaires, the URS-Series can also be used to convert open luminaires from T8 to using T5 tubes:

When Xtend EcoLight energy-saving fluorescent tubes with integrated electronic ballast cannot be used e. g.

.in luminaires with limited space for the illuminant

. if the surrounding temperature or humidity fluctuates

. heavily or with the use of air conditioning

. if the air is regularly contaminated with dust or similar matter. if you actually need more light than the T8 tubes provide

The URS-Series is relatively impervious to the surrounding conditions, can be used compactly in luminaires and can produce even more light than previously if required. It offers considerable savings potential as regards energy and maintenance costs, depending on the selected system performance of the T5 illuminant.

T5 fluorescent tubes from Xtend EcoLight are some of the most efficient and economic illuminants ever thanks to their long average lifespan of up to 40,000 hours and excel-lent luminosity of up to 105 lumens per watt. They can be used in all luminaires with a G5 socket.

OperationFluorescent tubes are low-pressure gas discharge lamps. When the coil on the side of the tubes is ignited, the gas charge contained in the lamp is discharged. The energy released converts the illuminant in the tubes into light. Different light colours can be achieved depending on the composition of the fluorescent coating.

In recent years many companies have installed luminaires with G5 sockets and T5 illuminants. Today this is standard in new buildings and extensions with office or service workplaces.

For existing luminaires with G5 socket: simply use Xtend EcoLight TP-Series. The T5 tubes from Xtend EcoLight save energy straight away or alternatively can generate more light with the same energy consumption when used instead of a standard T5 tube, depending on the selected Xtend EcoLight TP system performance. And thanks to the long average service light, you don’t have to change the illuminant as regularly. Also commonly used in luminaires with G5 socket in private homes e. g. as backlighting in kitchens and living rooms.

For the substitution of T8 tubes in older lighting installations:

Conversion to luminaires with G5 sockets is always an option if the new installation of luminaires is necessary or desired, e. g.

.because the sockets and contacts in the luminaires no longer work, need constant repair and require a high level of maintenance

. because the luminaires should be exchanged for aesthetic reasons

Conversion of lighting installations: install new luminaire with G5 socket, then use Xtend EcoLight TP-Series.
