Usage Guidelines

The ContacEZ LAB Strip System is designed to reduce the frustrations inherent in coordinating proximal contact restoration of crowns between dental offices and dental labs, creating a consistent procedure that reduces remakes and rebakes.

The clinically proven method illustrated below demonstrates how the ContacEZ LAB Strip System eliminates the need for guesswork and restores a perfect contact that is consistent with each dentist’s specifications.

Abrade the proximal surfaces of the adjacent teeth on the solid stone model using the ContacEZ LAB Stone Strip (Clear) 4 times. Each pass removes 0.01mm in depth, which results in 0.04mm removal of the adjacent teeth surface. (Fig. 1 & 2)

Prior to glazing, adjust the proximal contacts of the bisque baked crown on the solid stone using the ContacEZ LAB Bisque Strip (Black) until light resistance is felt on the strip. (Fig. 3 & 4)

After glazing, adjust the proximal contacts of the crown on the solid stone model using the ContacEZ LAB Glaze Strip (Gray) until light resistance is felt against the strip. (Fig. 5 & 6) Do not polish or buff the proximal surfaces of the crown so as not to change the proximal contact thickness. (Fig. 7) Additional adjustment will be done by your dentist in the patient’s mouth to achieve perfect proximal contact.

Usage Guidelines & Technique

The ContacEZ IPR Strip System is a safe and innovative interproximal reduction system that makes interproximal enamel stripping efficient and accurate without creating sharp corners or subgingival ledges. Designed for use with Invisalign®, ClearCorrectTM, eCligner, Six Month Smiles®, and other orthodontic treatments, these flexible diamond strips curve and conform along the natural contours of the teeth to maximize patient comfort and safety.

This technique is especially effective for anterior teeth and for case refinement. ContacEZ IPR Strips are autoclavable (steam heat only, up to 270˚F for 10 minutes at 30 psi max) and reusable, and should be sterilized prior to the first use. The manufacturer recommends to use each strip 3-5 times for maximum efficiency and functionality.

Hold the strip between your thumb and forefinger, insert the strip into the interproximal space, and gently pass the strip back and forth buccolingually until the strip is passive. Do not use vertical force. Start with the thinnest diamond strip, and repeat with thicker strips until you have reduced (stripped) the correct amount of enamel according to your treatment case prescription.

To ensure accurate measurements, polish the proximal surface using the ContacEZ Gray Final Polishing Strip.

Verify the width of the gap created using the ContacEZ Incremental Thickness Gauge. The location and amount of any reproximation performed should be recorded in the patient’s chart.

Pediatric dentists can use ContacEZ IPR Strips for the serial proximal reduction of primary molars.

The ContacEZ Subgingival Strip System is designed to safely and conveniently remove hard-to-reach subgingival rough margins and overhangs and polish the surface to restore a natural finish. This system is specially designed to access the subgingival area to make overhang removal simple while preventing damage to patients’ gingival tissue and lips. In addition, these ultra-narrow strips are perfect for cleaning out cement debris in the subgingival area of the interproximal space after crown cementation.

Use the Blue Narrow Strip when large, protruding overhangs are detected. Using a gentle buccolingual motion, the thin, serrated strip easily accesses the subgingival area and cuts away excess composite material or crown cement.

Use the Gold Narrow Strip when overhangs are smaller or do not stick out from the tooth. The thicker diamond strip allows you to quickly trim away overhangs and remove cement debris, while the blank central gateway enables smooth access to the interproximal space. This strip is also useful for removing biofilm around a cavity prep in the subgingival area for better bonding of the composite filling.

Use the Copper Narrow Strip to clean and polish the restoration after removing the overhang. The extra-fine diamond grit restores a healthy and natural finish to the surface of the tooth in one easy step.

Patient-friendly design prevents gagging and soft tissue irritation.

Use the Black Diamond Strip to adjust ideal proximal contacts and restore interproximal relief (IR)* by eliminating excessive pressure between the indirect restoration and the adjacent teeth without opening the contact. Use this strip prior to definitive cementation of crowns, inlays/onlays, and veneers. It is also useful to contour proximal surfaces of composite fillings.

Use this strip in place of the Black Diamond Strip when overly tight contacts are present, and the strip cannot access the interproximal space. The serrated edge readily separates and penetrates the tight contacts to prepare for ideal proximal contact adjustment. To clean out excess cement from the interproximal space, use the White or Blue Serrated Strips.

This ultra-thin serrated strip is designed to safely cut and clean out excess cement trapped in the interproximal space after cementation. Prior to light curing, use it for interproximal cleaning of multiple veneers or composite fillings without disturbing placement and to separate them from adjacent teeth. Pass the strip back and forth buccolingually only, using gentle force.

This heavy-duty dental saw is designed for more rigorous cutting and cleaning in the interproximal space. It safely cuts into massive excess resin cement trapped in the interproximal space as an alternative to the White Serrated Strip. It is also very useful for separating fused contacts of multiple veneers after light-curing.

Use this strip to polish proximal contact surfaces of restorations and to restore a natural finish in one step. This strip also confirms interproximal relief (IR)* after definitive cementation. For interproximal stain removal and cleaning, use the Hygienist Strip, Stain Remover.

Flexible strips conform to the natural contours of the teeth to avoid creating sharp corners.Autoclavable and reusable.

Revised: November 28, 2016

The ContacEZ Hygienist Strip is an advanced, high-precision dental strip designed to completely remove extrinsic discoloration from interproximal surfaces without causing damage to tooth enamel. The non-abrasive, flexible, stainless steel strips clean proximal contact areas of tough coffee, tea, tobacco, and red wine stains quickly, safely, and easily to ensure patient satisfaction and save hygienist chair time.

Removes stains and plaque from proximal surfaces Non-abrasive perforated strip protects enamel Easy to handle in even hard to reach areas Leaves a smooth proximal surface for flossing Flexible, highest-quality, stainless steel strip Thinner than dental floss Autoclavable, steam heat only, up to 270˚F

ObjectiveRemoving dark stains from interproximal surfaces can be an exceptionally difficult task. Stubborn stains, plaque, and calculus can set in tooth surfaces that are problematic to access, and abrasive tools and prophylactic pastes can damage the enamel from a patient’s teeth.

MethodThe final aesthetic appearance of a patient’s smile depends on a complete and thorough cleaning and polishing of all tooth surfaces.

Insert the Hygienist Strip into the interproximal space using two fingers. Carefully pass the strip buccolingually, back and forth, with gentle force, flexing the strip mesially and distally as necessary until the targeted stain is removed.

ContacEZ Hygienist Strips are a new solution to these problems. Thinner than dental floss, these single-handed, ergonomic strips are devised to fully and efficiently clean proximal contact surfaces while leaving the enamel unharmed.

Removing all stains and plaque from the interproximal surface ensures a completely clean and appealing look for the patient.

Proper polishing helps reduce pitting and defects on proximal surfaces which can cause accumulation of staining agents.

The ContacEZ Hygienist Strip provides optimal results, saves chair time, and ensures patient satisfaction.

In the patient’s mouth, insert the ContacEZ Black Diamond Strip into the distal and mesial interproximal spaces with the abrasive side facing the crown to determine which side has heavy contact. The side with more pressure is the side with heavier contact.

1. Adjust

Adjust proximal contact by moving the strip buccolingually, without vertical force, about 6 times on the side with heavier contact. Repeat this motion until equal pressure is felt on both sides. Proximal contact adjustment is complete, and the crown is ready for definitive cementation.

Check the clearance between the inner surface of the crown and the surface of the prepped abutment with an explorer. The side with less clearance is the side with heavier contact.

Place the crown onto the working stone model and pass the LAB Stone Strip (Clear) back and forth a few times with the abrasive side facing the crown in order to lighten the contact. Squeeze the model towards the crown to increase abrasion. Place the crown back into the patient’s mouth, and use the Black Diamond Strip to complete ideal proximal contact adjustment.

The crown is now ready for definitive cementation. After the crown is cemented, if there is excess cement trapped in interproximal spaces, use the White Serrated Strip to cut and clean out the trapped cement.

2. Clean

Using the Gray Final Polishing Strip, polish the adjusted proximal surfaces of the crown to restore a natural finish in one step. This strip also confirms Interproximal Relief* after definitive cementation.

3. Polish

The crown now has complete marginal seating. Dental floss will pass through the interproximal contacts with heavy resistance, snapping in and snapping out. ContacEZ’s innovative crown seating method allows you to seat crowns simply and easily, with minimum time and effort.

*Interproximal Relief: In natural dentition in its resting position, there is microscopic clearance or passive contact between teeth, which is referred to as Interproximal Relief. Therefore, when damaged teeth are artificially restored, Interproximal Relief must be restored for patient comfort and functionality. -Daniel S Kim DDS: The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, Vol. 97 No. 4, April 2007

After cementation, remove excess cement around the crown with an explorer. To cut and clean out any remaining cement in the interproximal spaces, use the White Serrated Strip, The Gentle Saw (0.035mm, No Diamond, Double-Serrated). If there is massive excess cement, use the Blue Serrated Strip.

To polish and restore to a finely-contoured, natural finish, pass the Gray Final Polishing Strip, The Proximal Surface Polisher (0.05mm, Ultra-Fine Diamond, Single-Sided), along the mesial and distal proximal surfaces of the crown. The crown seating of Tooth #8 is complete.

Ideal proximal contacts can be confirmed by using this strip, which has the same thickness as articulating film. Dental floss will pass through the interproximal contacts with heavy resistance, snapping in and snapping out.

ContacEZ has two alternative strips for adjusting and cleaning the interproximal space:

1. Adjust: Use the Orange Serrated Diamond Strip, The Proximal Contact Adjuster with Sawtooth, (0.05mm, Extra-Fine Diamond, Single-Sided, Serrated) when overly tight contacts are present, or if there is a challenge in positioning the Black Diamond Strip at initial contact.

2. Clean: For more rigorous cutting and cleaning, use the Blue Serrated Strip, The Heavy-Duty Dental Saw, (0.065mm, No Diamond, Double-Serrated). This strip is also very useful for separating fused contacts of multiple veneers after light curing.

Prior to cementation, place the crown on the prepared abutment (Tooth #8) and press up to the prepared margin. There will be resistance to seating the crown against the prepared margin due to heavy proximal contact.

Dislodge the crown slightly and insert the Black Diamond Strip, The Ideal Proximal Contact Adjuster, (0.06mm, Fine Diamond, Single-Sided), into the distal interproximal space with the abrasive side facing the crown. Allow the crown to sit on the prepared tooth, but do not force up or down. Hold the crown gently in place and start the adjustment by passing the strip back and forth buccolingually.

Repeat this procedure in the mesial interproximal space. When more pressure is detected on one side of the crown, pass the Black Diamond Strip buccolingually a few more times through the interproximal space on that side. Repeat this action on mesial and distal until there is equal light resistance on the strip.

When equal light resistance is felt on the strip in both mesial and distal spaces, Interproximal Relief (IR)* has been achieved, and the ideal proximal contact of the crown is complete. The crown is now ready for definitive cementation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What should I do if the Black Diamond Strip becomes stuck and will not move?

A. Dislodge the restoration and insert the Black Diamond Strip into the interproximal space. Place the restoration back on the abutment and hold it in place, being careful not to apply any downward pressure. Begin to pass the strip buccolingually back and forth. Because of the diamond particles’ orientation the strip will initially pass in only one direction but will eventually pass back and forth buccolingually. If you still cannot access the space, try the Orange Serrated Diamond Strip. (See Alternative Strips)

Q. What if the Black Diamond Strip cannot access the interproximal space?

A. When overly tight contacts are present, use the dual function Orange Serrated Diamond Strip to begin the adjustment.

If that does not work, move the crown to the stone working model and adjust the proximal contact using the Clear Stone Strip. For more information, refer to our website crown seating application: www.contacez.com/crown.

All ContacEZ Strips are very thin and delicate so as not to open the contact. Care should be taken to avoid using vertical force, or the strips may break. Pass ContacEZ Strips back and forth buccolingually only.

Q. Are ContacEZ Dental Strips autoclavable and reusable?

A. Yes. ContacEZ Dental Strips are autoclavable and reusable, however, they are not permanent tools. The manufacturer recommendation is to steam heat autoclave at 270°F for 10 minutes at 30 psi maximum, and to use each strip only 3-5 times. ContacEZ Strips are made of stainless steel with high-quality diamond powder, housed in a medical grade plastic casing with a melting point of 286°F. All strips should be sterilized prior to the first use and again between each reuse.

Q. Do the ContacEZ Restorative Strips cause food impaction issues?

A. No. Food impaction is prevented by properly deflecting contours and occlusal anatomy of the teeth. The ContacEZ Restorative Strip System helps to properly deflect contours by restoring Interproximal Relief and will not cause food impaction.
