About Us
Hydro Power Equipment (Pty) Ltd has since 1985 pioneered the use of hydropower (high pressure water) as an alternative powering source in mining and industry throughout Africa, Australia, Brazil, USA & Canada. The company, through innovative design and engineering excellence has proven the viability and necessity for hydropower as an efficient energy delivery medium for cost-effective mining and industrial water hydraulic systems.
HPE’s main line of business is high and low pressure valves (rated up to 250 Bar), drilling equipment, rock handling machines and devices, energy saving products, water jetting as well as auxiliary equipment associated with stoping in narrow ore bodies.

What is hydropower?
• Hydropower is the use of high pressure water (100 Bar to 250 Bar) to power, drive and operate various items of equipment such as drill rigs, rock drills and hammers, rock loaders, box hole chutes, water cylinders, cooling fans, pumps, emulsion explosive mixers, anfo loaders, grout pumps, chain saws, jetting guns, blast hole desludgers, water intensifiers, mud guns, skip arrestors as well as the control of actuators and pilot systems on the HPE valve range.
• Hydropower is an alternative energy source to compressed air, oil hydraulics, electrical and combustible fuels.
• Due to the efficiency of hydropower it creates opportunities to save on energy, improve on safety, health and the environment as well as an increase in production.
Hydropower impact on safety, health and environment
Hydropower is proving to be a practical and user friendly source of mining and it contributes to an improvement in the safety and health aspect of deep level underground mining of narrow tabular ore bodies.
• An extremely important contribution of hydropower towards safety and health is its potential to reduce hazardous noise in the work place to acceptable levels. This must be considered as a major breakthrough in the hearing conservation programmes currently being applied.
• Exhaust air from pneumatic rock drills contains oil vapours, which are harmful to one’s health. The presence of oil in the stope adds another dimension to the safety and health aspect due to slippery footwall conditions. The oil vapour also causes contamination of the ore bearing rock which could have an adverse effect in the process plant.
• Compared to pneumatic drilling, hydropower drilling has improved visibility due to the absence of dense fog associated with compressed air caused by the condensation of the humid air when brought into contact with the exhaust air from a pneumatic rock drill.
• Due to the high efficiency of the powerful hydropower rock drill over pneumatic and electric drilling, the time spent on the face by the rock drill crew is reduced, which limits the exposure of personnel to extended periods in the high risk zone.

Design Standards and Philosophy
Valves
The HPE valve range covers a broad spectrum of requirements and is mainly used in underground applications
where the valves are exposed to high pressures, arduous conditions in terms of the corrosive environment and
dirty and contaminated water.
Design standards and philosophy
• Rated up to 250 Bar working pressure
• Conform to ANSI B16.34 specifications
• Y-pattern globe type valve body for reduced pressure drop. Angle pattern bodies are also available
• Ability to maintain in line
• Cast steel bodies with the option of being hot dip galvanised
• Stainless steel and bronze internals
• High dirt tolerance
• High cavitation resistance due to poppet, seat and cage design
• Valve actuation done by electric control or through hydropower water with its hydrologic control
Drill Rigs and Mechanisation
HPE identified the huge divide in South African mines between hand held drilling and electro hydraulic operated
drilling machines in terms of safety and power and subsequently set out to satisfy the need for powerful drilling
machines that are low on complexity and intuitively obvious to operate, whilst at the same time also removing
the operator from the danger area.

Hand Held Hydropower Drilling - Closed Loop
Hydropower drilling improves on the health, safety & environment
and has a dramatic improvement on the drilling speed compared to
compressed air & electric drilling. The Drill can be operated with or
without a water return line i.e. water used to power the drill, other
than for flushing, can either be dumped onto the floor
or returned to the power pack via a return line hose.
The return line water can either be piped straight
back into the mine service water supply line or into
a level controlled tank from where it is pumped
through a filtration system back into the Power
Pack suction line.
• Drill steel diameter 22 or 25 mm hex
• Drill water consumption 1 ℓ/sec
• Return water to power pack – closed loop 0,7 ℓ/sec
• Flushing water 0,3 ℓ/sec
• Drill speed 60 sec for 1 m (4.5 kW drill)

Pump Control Valve (Electric Control Actuator)
Pump Control Valves protect pumps and pipe lines against any
damage that may result from starting/stopping or flow surging
caused by an electrical trip out. This is achieved by keeping a
back pressure on the pump and by minimizing the pressure
surges (water hammer).
Manual Isolation Valve
To manually isolate flow at a very high pressure but with a low
hand wheel force and also to throttle flow for extended periods
of time.
Surge Relief Valve
The purpose of the Surge Relief Valve is to rapidly open when the
pressure reaches a pre-set limit thereby eliminating excessive
pressure surges or over pressure conditions.
Pump Column Protection
Pump Column Protection is required on every mine dewatering
system to eliminate/minimise the risk of bursting a pipe due to
pressure spikes (water hammer) caused by a high velocity change,
separation cavitation change or uncontrolled pump stop or start.
Pump Control Valve (Hydrologic control actuator)
Pump Control Valves protect pumps and pipe lines against any
damage that may result from starting/stopping or flow surging
caused by an electrical trip out by minimizing the pressure surges
(water hammer) and by keeping a back pressure on the pump.

Surge Anticipation Valve
The purpose of the Surge Anticipation
Valve is to prevent pressure surges
above the steady state pumping
pressure in the event of a pump
tripout, entirely by mechanical means,
thus eliminating the need for electrical
systems that require a battery UPS
back-up.
This system detects a surge before the
actual event happens, which ensures
that the surge will not exceed the
column pump out pressure.
Non Return Valve
To minimize pipeline pulses (water hammer), generated by a
pump trip out, by closing rapidly in the reverse flow direction.
It is mainly used with Pump Control Valves in mine dewatering
applications.
Air Admission Valve
To allow air to be admitted to the pipe and thereby prevent a
vacuum forming in the pipe.
Energy Dissipator
To destroy pressure energy in fluids so that the energy can be
reduced by a finite desired amount.

Excess Flow Control Valve - high pressure
The purpose of a Safety Isolation Valve is to shut off in the event
of an excess flow condition resulting from a pipe burst or in
circumstances where flow rates need to be controlled without
causing a pressure surge (water hammer) in the process. The
trip mode is in 2 stages - initially very rapid to prevent a runaway
flow, then slowly to give a soft shut off. The trip flow is normally
set at 35% above the working flow rate.
Turbine Control Valve
To achieve rapid closure followed by slow shut off on turbine
nozzle pipelines. This minimizes pressure surges (i.e. water
hammer) and prevents pelton wheel turbines from over speeding
in the event of loss of electrical load.
Flow Control Valve
To supply high pressure water for the descaling of rolling
mill products in the steelworks industry. The valve has the
characteristic in that it first fills the descaler manifold before
it fully opens to eliminate water hammer in a partially empty
descaler system which can occur during the waiting period.
The opening and closing are done in 2 stages with both stages
controlled over a certain time to prevent water hammer.
Dam Level Control Valve
The system consists of a Dam Level Control Valve, Pilot System
and Energy Dissipator to control the level of water in underground
dams, to limit flow to specific requirements and to eliminate
noise and cavitation. Controlled opening and closing of the valve
prevent pressure surges.

Pressure Reducing Station
Pressure Reducing Stations typically consist
of one duty and one standby leg. Each leg will
comprise of an Inlet Isolation Valve, Strainer,
Pressure Reducing Valve and Outlet Isolation
Valve. A Surge Relief Valve is installed on the
common downstream line.
Excess Flow Control Valve - low pressure
The purpose of a Safety Isolation Valve is to shut off in the event
of an excess flow condition caused by pipeline failure or excess
consumption from downstream operations without causing a
pressure surge (water hammer) in the process. The valve can be
manually or hydraulically (water pressure signal) closed and then
reopened without an excess flow condition occurring. The trip
flow is normally set at 35% above the working flow rate.
Pressure Regulating Valve
Pressure Regulating Valves accurately maintain a constant
preset downstream pressure, regardless of changing upstream
pressures or flow rates, with controlled response designed to
ensure stability and minimal line surging when flow changes
rapidly downstream.
Pressure Ratio Valves accurately maintain a set differential ratio
between upstream and downstream pressures.
Backfill Diverter Valve
To divert the flow of backfill material from one point of placement
to another and also to divert flushing water away from the
placement point when pipes are flushed at the end of a backfill
placement cycle. Furthermore to ensure that the placed backfill
material is not diluted or washed away by the flushing water.
Manual & electric operated versions available.

The Box Front System includes the frame & platform as a package.
Major features include a double door system and ease of installation.
Ventilation Fan
To provide an intrinsically safe flow of ventilation air in standard
570 and 762 mm ducts (available in 15 and 22 kW) using
hydropower as the energy source whilst cooling the air with the
turbine outlet water.
Water Jetting Gun
The Water Jetting Gun is a hand held water jet tool
that uses a high pressure water jet to move broken
rock, more particularly in a stoping environment
where rock is moved into the scraper path. Alternatively the gun
can also be used for sweepings in the stopes. A bigger version
- the Cannon - has a high impact force and is used in a stoping
environment to move broken rock down dip into a gully of a 25
to 30 m panel.
Water Jet Pump
To use high pressure water as the energy medium
for the pumping of contaminated water from
sumps, drains or for cleaning dams.

Hydro Compressor (Anfo Loader)
The purpose of the Hydro Compressor is to provide sufficient
air pressure and flow to clean and flush holes and to load
explosives into blast holes.
The Hydro Compressor provides compressed air for
either a special anfo loading hopper, an explosive
capsule gun or any other device that requires
compressed air (e.g. grout guns).
Pipe Connector
To offer an alternative to flanges when high pressure pipes are
coupled for working with pressures up to 250 Bar. The advantages
over a flange coupling is cost and time saving when pipes are
coupled. The pipe connectors are suitable for schedule 40 up to
160 pipe. A feature of this connector is that the hubs are identical
i.e. no male or female sides and the seal acts as a spigot when
aligning the pipes.
Furnace Tapping System
The Furnace Tapping System offers low cost, low maintenance
and safe servicing in submerged arc furnaces, specifically for
the ferroalloy production industry. HPE’s Mudgun, Drill and Poker
Systems are driven by an environmentally friendly and fire safe
hydraulic system which is operated on
additive free potable water.
Typically, a complete taphole service
system consists of a clay pump called a
Mudgun for closing of a taphole, a Taphole
Drill which drills the taphole through the
wall, and if desired, a Poker to break
through to start the tapping.
