About FRP and its Misconceptions
BELIEF TRUTH
FRP is a plastic material. Can it take
Heavy Loads
Yes ,FRP is polymer resin based material but use of glass fibres provides
immense strength. It can be designed to take loads more than 40 T also.
If FRP is plastic then it must have SCRAP
Value
FRP is thermoset plastic and formed by chemical process which is
irreversible. Hence it cannot be recycled and has no scrap value
If FRP is non-recyclable then it must be
Hazardous to Environment
FRP is not recyclable but it does not release any harmful chemicals in the
environment throughout its lifetime. It is greener than CI or RCC as recycling
releases CO2 & other harmful gases in Environment.
All makes of FRP products are same as
long as they are used for same
application.
FRP products are engineered products. Unlike Iron FRP is not a uniform
load bearing material. Hence design and material used to make product
make a HUGE difference in performance & Quality.
• Fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) (also fibre-reinforced polymer) is a composite
material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers.
• There are three important categories of fibre used in FRP, glass, carbon,
and aramid. Glass reinforced polymers are strongest and most resistive to
deforming forces.

Load Specifications (As Per IS 1726:1991)
• LD-2.5 (2.5 Tonnes) : Suitable for use within residential and institutional complexes/areas
with pedestrian but occasional light motor vehicle traffic. These covers are also used for
‘Inspection Chambers’
• MD-10 (10 Tonnes) : Suitable for use in service lanes/roads, on pavements for use under
medium duty vehicular traffic including car parking areas.
• HD-20 (20 Tonnes) : Suitable for use in institutional/commercial/carriageways/city trunk
roads/bus terminus, with heavy duty vehicular traffic of wheel loads between 5-10 tonnes
like Buses/Trucks and parking areas and where the manhole chambers are located in
between the pavement and the middle of the road.
• EHD 35 (35 Tonnes) : Suitable for use on carriageways/industrial/port areas/near
warehouses/godowns where frequent loading and unloading of trucks/trailers are common,
with slow to fast moving vehicular traffic of the types having wheel loads upto 11.5 tonnes
irrespective of the location of the manhole chambers.

Comparison between FRP & Steel Sections
Sr. Properties Everlast Steel
1 Corrosion Resistance
Very High Subject to Oxidation & Corrosion
2 Weight Light Weight – Weighs only 25% as much
of steel Will require lifting equipments to move and
place
3 Conductivity Highly insulating material Conducts electricity, potential Shock hazard
4 Strength High strength to weight ratio Lower strength to weight ration
5 Stiffness Will not permanently deform under load
conditions Any deformation will be permanent in nature
6 Impact
Resistance
Glass mat distributes load evenly to prevent surface damage
Can permanently deform under impact
7 EMI / RFI
Transparency Transparent to EMI/RFI interferences Can Interfere with EMI/RFI transmissions
8 Versatility Pigments added to resin provide uniform
coloring through volume
Colour is applied only on surface via paint/coating.
9 Field
Fabrication
Can be fabricated on site using simple carpenter tools. Erection easy due to
light weight.
Needs specialized cutting and welding equipment and skilled labor. Heavier material requires special lifting equipment to manage.
10 Cost Lower lifecycle cost due to low
maintenance and installation cost. High Lifecycle costs.
