Australia’s Own Since 1852Eucalyptus oil was the first truly Australian product and Australia’s first indigenous export. Joseph Bosisto, a pharmacist from England, pioneered the commercial production of eucalyptus oil in 1852, commencing operations at a small distillery near Dandenong Creek in Victoria.

In 1867 Felton Grimwade & Co. became the distributors of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil and it has been produced and marketed by the company ever since.

Since 1852, Bosisto’s has remained a trusted favourite with generations of Australians.

Eucalyptus production... from leaf to bottle

Eucalyptus oil production is sustainable, renewable and kind to the environment. Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil contains Blue Mallee (Eucalyptus polybractea) which is grown in the Inglewood district near Bendigo, Victoria. The trees are harvested every two years and the mallee roots, which remain in the ground, send up new growth after each cutting. Some areas have been harvested for over 100 years with no damage to the trees and wildflowers. Native plants and animals flourish in this environment.

But how does eucalyptus oil get from leaf to bottle?

Let’s take a look at how the knowledge of yesteryear combines with today’s modern technology to create Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil.

Blue Mallee trees grow to around one metre tall before harvesting. No herbicides, pesticides, fertilisers or chemicals are used – just the natural elements of the sun, soil and rain.

The leaves are cut by a harvester a few centimetres from the ground and collected in a mobile still which is towed behind. When full (with about three tonnes of leaf), the mobile still is transported back to the distillery.

A boiler is used to generate steam to extract the oil from the leaves. The boiler itself is fuelled using already distilled eucalyptus leaves – a renewable source of fuel.

A lid is clamped on the top of the still and steam is connected at the base. The steam causes the oil in the leaves to vaporise and through the simple process of steam distillation, the oil is extracted from the leaf.

Arthritis, Muscular Aches & PainsSoothing LinimentFor soothing relief of muscular aches and pains, gently massage Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil into the affected area until a warm glow is felt. Repeat as required. This is also useful for relieving the pain of arthritis, sprains and muscle strains. Before exercise, a warming rub with Oil can help loosen and relax muscles.

Colds & FluInhalationAs an inhalation to help soothe cold and flu symptoms, add 2mL (or half a teaspoon) of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil per litre of hot water to a bowl, cover head with a towel and inhale vapours. For easier daytime breathing, sprinkle a few drops of Oil on a handkerchief and inhale.

Children’s ColdsDilute Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil with an equal part of baby oil. Gently massage onto the child’s chest and back to help clear nasal passages and make it easier to breathe.

Asthma & AllergiesReducing dust mites in the home can help lower the number and frequency of asthma and allergy attacks. Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil and Spray are highly effective in killing and controlling household dust mites. Use the Spray (on mattresses, pillows, carpets, sofas and soft toys) and the Oil (in the laundry wash) to help reduce dust mites and allergens.

The steam containing oil and water is cooled then collected. The oil naturally rises to the top where it is decanted and the water is recycled.

After distillation, the spent leaves are emptied from the still. The steaming process sterilises the material which is either used as fuel for the boiler or as an excellent garden mulch.

The eucalyptus oil is later re-distilled to remove any impurities. It is then used to create Bosisto’s distinctive, premium-grade eucalyptus oil.

We bottle and label our eucalyptus oil onsite in Melbourne and distribute to supermarkets, pharmacies and other outlets around Australia for you to enjoy!

Bosisto’s Wool Wash Recipe

The following recipe is excellent for soft and fluffy woollens.

Pure Soap Flakes ½ packet (300g)

Methylated Spirits 250mL

Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil 50mL

Mix methylated spirits with soap flakes. Add the and stir. Store in a wide necked screw capped jar.Use one tablespoon of mixture per garment. Dissolve in a small quantity of hot water then pour into lukewarm wash water. Hand or machine wash on wool cycle.

No need to rinse unless white garments are being stored for a long period - rinsing reduces the risk of yellowing.

Squeeze and roll in towel to remove excess water. Keep garments in shape while drying out of direct sunlight.

OutdoorsInsect RepellentBosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray is an excellent mosquito repellent. For long-lasting protection, rub a mixture of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil and baby or vegetable oil onto the skin.

Cleaning BarbecuesBosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil is excellent for cleaning greasy barbecues – just use a solution of hot soapy water mixed with two teaspoons of the Oil and wash with a brush or scourer. Rinse thoroughly before use.

Garden ToolsTo eliminate bacteria that can create cross-contamination in soil, wash all garden tools in hot water with two teaspoons of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil.

Garden Spray Recipe

Bosisto’s Garden Spray has become very popular with home gardeners because it is natural and non-residual:

Canola oil 20mL (4 teaspoons)Dishwashing detergent 2mL (1 - 2 squirts)Water 1 litre (4 cups) Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil 5mL (1 teaspoon)

Spray around seedlings and at the base of plants. Repeat as necessary. Ideal for earwigs, slugs, snails and slaters. Do not store made up spray. Thoroughly wash sprayer after use.

PetsBeddingFreshen and deodorise pet bedding by adding two capfuls of Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Oil to the wash. It cleans, removes pet odours and can even help deter fleas and ticks.#

Pet AreasPet owners find the Spray excellent for freshening and deodorising pet quarters. Add a capful of the Oil to water when washing dogs to deter fleas.#

Pet StainsTo help banish tough stains when on the couch or carpet, simply remove any solids and saturate the soiled area with Bosisto’s Eucalyptus Spray, wiping towards the centre of the mark with a clean, damp cloth.

Lavender Oil Soothing, Calming & RelaxingInsomnia, Nervous Tension & Mild AnxietyThere is a large amount of scientific evidence suggesting that lavender oil improves sleep quality, promotes relaxation and reduces anxiety. There are many ways Bosisto’s Lavender Oil can be used to calm, relax and help reduce stress.

Natural Aromatherapy Add the Oil to an oil burner to fill the room with a calming scent. Always extinguish candle before sleep and never leave an oil burner unattended. Alternatively, use the Spray in the bedroom before sleep.

‘Tea Tree’ is native to the north coast of New South Wales. The oil, a complex of over 100 naturally occurring compounds, is a clear to pale yellow liquid with a fresh characteristic odour.

Tea tree oil has a long history of use as an antiseptic, antifungal and deodoriser - Australian Aboriginals used tea tree leaves to wrap wounds to promote faster healing. It is natural and gentle on the skin.

The oil was even included in the kits of World War II soldiers fighting in the tropics, where its ability to assist with infections, wounds and tinea earned it the nickname “first aid in a bottle”.

Today, it is a favourite in many Australian households for its versatility and practical uses around the home.

Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil Australian tea tree oil is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of the freshly harvested foliage tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia).

Foot CareThe feet are a breeding ground for bacteria, and common complaints can include foot odour, fungal infections of the toenails and athlete’s foot (tinea).

Foot Odour

To combat foot odour, bathe feet in a solution of one capful of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil and warm water.

Shoe Deodoriser

To help kill bacteria, freshen and eliminate odours, use Bosisto’s Tea Tree Spray to spray shoes such as sports runners as required. Repeat as necessary.

Tinea / Fungal InfectionsWash and dry feet thoroughly. Apply either Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil or Spray (holding can 15cm from skin) directly in between toes or on the affected area to help kill bacteria. Repeat as necessary. To help improve results for tinea, spray footwear as required.

Health Solutions Insect Bites & StingsApply Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil or Spray directly onto the affected area to ease the pain and itching of mosquito and other insect bites. Do not rub in. Repeat as necessary.

Acne & PimplesBosisto’s Tea Tree Oil can help control and heal pimples by killing the bacteria that cause inflammation. Wash the face well, then dab directly onto pimples. Repeat at least twice daily. For sensitive skin, use 15% solution in water.

Dandruff & Head LiceAdd 12 drops of the Oil to shampoo to help relieve an itchy, flaky scalp. Alternatively, add 12 drops of the Oil to your regular conditioner and comb through to help remove head lice. To help reduce the potential for head lice, spray inside caps and hats as required. Note: Not recommended to spray directly onto scalp.

AntisepticMinor Cuts & AbrasionsDab wound gently with cotton wool soaked in the Oil. Alternatively, use Bosisto’s Tea Tree Spray. Hold can 15cm from the affected area and spray. Repeat as necessary.

Rashes including Shaving Rash Skin irritations such as scaling, flaking and itching may be soothed by adding a few drops of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil to a lotion or a carrier oil such as olive oil. Massage into affected area daily.

PetsFor cleaning and deodorising pet quarters, use the Spray to help remove unwanted bacteria and odours. It is great for bedding and may help deter fleas and other insects.

Ticks on DogsPlace two drops of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil directly onto the tick. Wait a few minutes for the parasite to die. Carefully remove the tick with tweezers, ensuring the head is removed. Wash the wound with a solution of 10% Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil mixed in warm water. Apply the Oil directly three times a day until the wound is healed.

Insect Bites & ItchingApply 10% solution of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil onto the bite to help ease pain and itching.

Note: Ensure Bosisto’s Tea Tree Spray is not used directly on pets. Prevent any animals from licking the area where Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil is used.

Household Uses CleaningFor floors, hard surfaces, kitchen and bathroom cleaning, add one capful of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil to your wash liquid to help remove unwanted bacteria and odours. Alternatively, use Bosisto’s Tea Tree Spray to spot clean surfaces.

LaundryTo kill germs and odours in socks and sports gear, add two capfuls of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil to the wash. This will also leave the laundry smelling clean and fresh.

Mould & Mildew To remove mould and help prevent mildew, use the Spray directly on problem areas. Do not rinse.

Toilets & Drains To freshen toilets and drains, add one capful of the Oil, or use the Spray. It helps to kill germs and remove bacteria.

Rubbish Bins Wash and deodorise your rubbish bins using one capful of the Oil and warm water with two drops of detergent, then use Bosisto’s Tea Tree Spray to deodorise.

Travel & RecreationInsect RepellentHolding can 10 - 15cm from skin, spray directly over body to help repel insects. Test a small patch first to check skin is not sensitive to the Oil.

Deodorising Camping GearSpray Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil to freshen and deodorise sleeping bags, tents and camping toilets. Also terrific to freshen caravans, boats and fishing gear.

SplintersApply a few drops of Bosisto’s Tea Tree Oil before removing a splinter, to help heal and prevent infection.

Eucalyptus oil & dust mites Nature has given us the ultimate weapon against dust mites – eucalyptus oil! Traditionally, washing at very high temperatures (55°C+) would be required to help kill dust mites, however this can be harmful to fabrics and waste energy.

Australian researchers Tovey & McDonald* found that eucalyptus oil (in a laundry solution) was more effective than hot water. Killing up to 99% of dust mites and removing their allergens regardless of water temperature.
