Director’s NoteSince Romeo+Juliet (A Cover) was postponed last spring, many COVID-19 adjustments have been made to keep both actors and audiences safe throughout our production process. Our cast and crew have followed guidelines from the CDC, Carroll University, and from the University of Colorado’s Performing Arts Aerosol Study to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Our cast size has been reduced from 35 to 20, each person’s temperature is taken every day at the start of rehearsal, and HEPA filters run constantly in the house and backstage. Cloth or clear masks are worn (with Merv-13 filter fabric sewn inside) unless a solo performer removes their mask for a moment - either to be filmed, or for emotional impact – and everyone around them is distanced and masked when those moments occur. Disposable gloves are also worn at all times. Props, masks and costumes are sanitized and cleaned after use or wear, sanitizing stations are prevalent backstage, and mics/props will not be shared by multiple actors.

Distancing has been implemented and respected - you’ll notice that kissing happens less often than it might otherwise in Romeo and Juliet. We use a lot of mask-to-gloved-hand kissing between Romeo and Juliet (or Juliet and Paris,) and we’ve implemented some fantastic theatrical magic for the two places Romeo and Juliet are ‘required’ to kiss - by using silhouettes! The actors are on two completely different planes in reality, but their shadows appear to kiss in silhouette.

We also filmed many of the production’s musical numbers in advance, which helps to mitigate aerosol emission and allows us to share a true multi-media performance that includes both live and pre-recorded footage. Finally, audience members and performers will be located in separate buildings (actors and musicians in the Otteson Theatre; in-person Carroll University-only audiences in Shattuck Auditorium) and there will also be an option for public audiences to watch the live stream of this unique theatrical experience from the comfort of their own homes.

Dramaturgy NoteYou probably know the story of Shakespeare’s classic, Romeo and Juliet: two teenagers from feuding Italian families fall in love and end up killing themselves in the end. If you’re anything like me, you might be a little frustrated with these teenagers. If they were just a bit more patient with their relationship, they wouldn’t have died, right? While it does seem ridiculous that Romeo and Juliet would fall madly in love at first sight (particularly at a masquerade), historical context suggests some good reasons why the two would feel the need to risk everything for the sake of their relationship.

Feuds between upper-class families like the Capulets and Montagues actually happened in Renaissance Italy. The infamous Medici and Borgia families were rivals because of their hunger for money and power, and they always wanted the upper hand when it came to business or political deals. One especially important type of business deal for families like these was marriage. Elite marriages depended very little on romantic feelings and were instead tools for families to improve their social standing. Women in particular had little say in the matter and were expected to marry whoever their parents choose, no matter how old or unappealing the suitors may be.

Even if the Capulets happened to like the Montagues, Romeo would have been no match for Juliet’s other suitor, Paris, who is a relative of the prince and thus has a higher social standing than any Montague. Thus, our star-crossed lovers would have had no hope of being together if they had abided by the social standards of their aristocratic world.
