Together We Can End Hunger and Make Nutritious Food Accessible to All!

“One of the charities that I have always donated to is Philabundance, a local organization which started as a grassroots operation many years ago in Philadelphia. Philabundance continues as the region’s largest hunger relief organization, with a network of over 350 member agencies and distribution programs across nine counties in PA and NJ. Many Charities Save Lives Today… Others Save Many More in the Future

“My wife Dana and I dedicate both our time and money to help as many organizations as possible, from St. Judes Hospital and American Red Cross to YMCA, Clearwater Free Clinic and Suncoast Hospice – to name just a few. Locally, I volunteer every year at the Valspar PGA tour event, operated by the Copperhead Charities. The Copperheads have generated many millions of dollars for charities primarily in the Tampa Bay area.”

On behalf of the ESICA Board of Directors and myself, I would

like to wish you a happy New Year! 2018 promises to be an

exciting year!

As many of you know, our 2017 Fall Conference with CSIA was

set to take place in Houston, Texas during the first week of

September. Unfortunately, mother nature had other plans for us!

Due to the devastating impact Hurricane Harvey had on Texas,

we were forced to cancel the conference.

Although the conference did not take place, we knew that we

needed to help. After much research, we came across Direct Relief and were extremely

impressed by all the organization has done and continues to do for those who need

support during such trying times. I am proud to say that ESICA and CSIA decided to both

make donations to this wonderful organization in an effort to help those in need. It also

brings much pride to see the efforts of our members who are volunteering their time and

resources to support hurricane victims. These stories are featured in this edition of the

ESICA Review, so be sure to check that out!

Our next conference will be held in Amelia Island, Florida from May 2nd to 4th. The Omni

Amelia Island is a beautiful resort and the perfect location for our 2018 Spring Conference.

We are very excited to hear our keynote speaker, Ed Rowell from FMI speaking about the

Characteristics of Enduring Organizations. Ed was originally scheduled to speak at our

2017 Fall Conference, so we are very glad that he was available to speak at this conference.

Keep an eye out for registration information!

I look forward to seeing everyone in sunny Amelia Island!

Kind Regards.

Easing the Burden of a Family in Crisis

“The Ronald McDonald House was established to provide a home away from home for families of children who are being treated at nearby hospitals and medical facilities. The location near me is next to the Rhode Island Hospital. I believe that donating to a cause like this helps ease the family’s hardship and

long way in improving the health and well being of their child.”

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

Thermal Solutions Rises to New Heights!

It’s official. Comcast Technology Center is the tallest building in Philadelphia. Under construction since 2014, this 60-story tower soars to 1,121 feet. Not only is it Philadelphia’s tallest building, it is the city’s first skyscraper, a structure that is defined as at least 1,000 feet tall.

With LF Driscoll as the General Contractor and A.T. Chadwick the mechanical contractor for Plumbing and HVAC systems, Thermal Solutions was chosen as the Insulation Contractor for Plumbing. “With all the eyes on this project and the high demand for a quality product, Thermal Solutions delivered!” stated George Clark, Project Manager for A.T. Chadwick.

Chadwick first approached Thermal Solutions over four years ago with initial budgets and they began working together through all the budgeting and value engineering. “We were pulled in early because of our longstanding relationship with Chadwick as well as our reputation for getting projects done on time and on budget,” emphasized David Latch, Vice President of Thermal Solutions.

Another key reason why Thermal Solutions was the best choice for the project is their reputation for immediate attention to the issues that arise on major jobs such as this. “The magnitude of the project presented a learning curve early on with loading materials and manpower throughout the floors,” said David. “We all knew this was going to be a challenge logistically as it is the only 60-story building in the city.”

Page 13: Products and Services - cdn.ymaws.com€¦ · FBM-SPI HiCube Coating Homans Associates Ideal Products of America, LP Insulation Materials Corporation Inspection Point Seals, LLC ITW

Thermal Solutions has been on-site for the past two years with four to six men working during peak construction periods. The piping was insulated with Knauf Fiberglass that utilizes a laminated ASJ jacketing for greater water resistance and protection from the elements as the building went up. Full completion is slated for this summer. “It’s been a real pleasure to watch the building come together over the past two years and a real honor to work on the largest building in the city with so many skilled craftsmen!” enthused Foreman Matt Salerno.

The new Comcast Technology Center is unique to Philadelphia with its soaring beauty and mixed-use occupancy. Forty-four of the 60 stories will be used as office space for Comcast. This will be the third tower that Comcast occupies in downtown Philadelphia. The Four Seasons Hotel will sit at the very top of the building. The hotel’s two-story restaurant on the 60th floor will not only offer great food but the most spectacular views imaginable of the city and surrounding areas. 13

We Have Faith that Our Support has a Positive Impact on Those Who Receive

“Each year we adopt a family in our community that is needing some assistance for the holidays. This past year we adopted a family of seven that was devastated by Hurricane Harvey. We provided jeans, warm coats, sweaters and shoes for each of the 5 kids, as well as a couple of toys. For the family’s household needs, we had an employee donate a laptop computer and other

used to purchase them a new microwave and grocery store gift cards.”

Compassion, Generosity & Commitment: ESICA Members Give Back in Times of Crisis Hurricanes and their subsequent destruction can be absolutely devastating, but it is always heartwarming to see how people come together to support those in their time of need. While this past season’s hurricanes – Harvey, Irma and Maria - destroyed parts of Texas, Florida, and almost all of Puerto Rico, ESICA companies in the path of the hurricanes have risen up and helped in amazing ways.

We reached out to those members impacted by the storms - Johns Manville, Dyplast Products, Owens Corning and ITW - -- and asked them to share their experiences and the ways they helped support recovery efforts.

“The pain and anguish on the faces seen in pictures from the flooded areas is heart-breaking. These are the times when helping people matters most.”

Mary Rhinehart, President and CEO, Johns Manville

With several Johns Manville (JM) plants in the southern and southeastern U.S. – including two in Texas and one in Florida – the recent tragedies hit close to home. JM donated $50,000 to the American Red Cross Hurricane Harvey and Hurricane Irma Relief Funds. The company also pledged to match employee donations dollar-for-dollar to the same funds through the end of September.

INSIGHT: HELPING THOSE IN NEED

(continued on page 22)

21

Page 22: Products and Services - cdn.ymaws.com€¦ · FBM-SPI HiCube Coating Homans Associates Ideal Products of America, LP Insulation Materials Corporation Inspection Point Seals, LLC ITW

Since the hurricanes struck, employees have been eager to help in every way possible. For example, JM employees at the Richland, Mississippi plant gave temporary storage space to the American Red Cross so supplies could be more easily transported to nearby affected areas.

Johns Manville has a long history of responding to the needs of others and showing great compassion in times of crisis. “We share a common set of values at JM that puts people first. We are people champions. Our employees, our customers and our suppliers are at the core of everything we do,” Rhinehart said. “We feel fortunate that JM employees impacted by the storm escaped injury, though we are aware the total recovery time for some will be long. We will continue to keep our JM family, first responders and all those impacted by Hurricane Harvey in our thoughts and prayers.”

“Throughout the past 30 years, we have built many close relationships with our customers in Puerto Rico. The images we were receiving of Hurricane Maria were very dramatic. We immediately tried to establish contact and learned just how bad things really were. We had to help.”

Vincent Fuster, Senior Vice President & CFO, Dyplast Products

Over the course of just a few hours, Hurricane Maria exposed how fragile Puerto Rico was. The storm caused the island’s entire electric grid to fail, its network of roads and highways to be disrupted, and the clean drinking water delivery system to collapse.

Dyplast Products, located in Miami, FL had just weeks before felt the effects of Hurricane Irma. While Dyplast fortunately experienced minimal physical damage to their facility, there was a considerable amount

INSIGHT: HELPING THOSE IN NEED

Page 23: Products and Services - cdn.ymaws.com€¦ · FBM-SPI HiCube Coating Homans Associates Ideal Products of America, LP Insulation Materials Corporation Inspection Point Seals, LLC ITW

of cleanup from downed trees and foliage and power outages were widespread. “Despite the fact that our employees were without power for about a week, they showed up for work, ready to do whatever it took to get the plant up and running,” said Vincent. “We were actually back up in three days thanks to the amazing efforts of our dedicated team!”

When the call for help came from Dyplast’s customers and friends in Puerto Rico, the company came to their aid from the President, to those on the manufacturing line, to their suppliers. Everyone did what they could– some contributed cash, others helped with packing and expediting much needed supplies. Many people were involved, putting boxes together and labeling them for shipment. Containers were filled with water, generators, inverters, gas stoves, flashlights, lanterns, and boxes of food. It was truly a total team effort.

The next step was delivery of the containers, which was no easy task. It took several attempts by officials to offload the Dyplast containers from the ship, before they were on their way to those who so desperately needed aid. To ensure the goods arrived at their designated locations, Vincent flew down to Puerto Rico and, together with their customers on the island, contracted a transportation company to deliver the goods successfully!

“Professionally, our Houston employees impacted by Hurricane Harvey were bolstered by our company’s commitment to them and their families … personally, it just feels good to help those in need.”

Rob English, Director of Sales, North Region, Owens Corning

Employees in the Owens Corning plants in Houston suffered flood damage to their homes from Hurricane Harvey. While the two Houston plants were shut down due to some minor flooding, the company and their employees rallied together to help those affected by the disaster.

“Many people wanted to feel that they had contributed, in some way, to those in need,” stated Rob English. “We found that the best way our people could reach out and help was through financial donations.”

Owens Corning established a company-matched donation campaign with funds going to the Red Cross Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. The Red Cross is using donation dollars to provide shelter, food, and emergency support to the individuals and families in need. The donation campaign provided employees with a vital channel to reach out and help. It was their primary path to assisting fellow employees.

While the company’s financial commitment was a key element in supporting victims, many employees also volunteered their time and effort providing hands-on assistance in cleaning up, stripping ruined dry wall, minimizing mold growth and much more.

The deep dedication shown by Owens Corning employees during Hurricane Harvey is an essential part of the company’s commitment to volunteerism. The Owens Corning Foundation encourages and recognizes its employees through a variety of programs and partnerships in the communities they serve. Proactively promoting volunteerism and providing support, encouragement, and recognition to employees who serve has achieved a 72% participation rate worldwide.

“It’s impossible to witness so much destruction and not offer help. As individuals, everyone has given of their time, strength and funds to help our neighbors, friends, families and total strangers.”

Lori Roy, Marketing Manager, ITW Insulation Systems

ITW Insulation Systems, located in Houston, began shutting down operations on the Friday before Harvey hit, enabling employees to prepare their homes and families for the storm. “As a result of the great pre-storm preparations of our team, our facilities were spared

from any costly damage,” confirmed Lori Roy – it was nothing compared to the destruction thousands of homes and businesses are coping with and cleaning up.”

Thankfully, the majority of ITW employees were spared: Two employees and their families had to be evacuated by boat and lost everything while several others lost vehicles or sustained roof or other minor damages.

Everyone at ITW pitched in to help in some way, collecting money for those hit hardest. A raffle was held for two Miller welding machines with proceeds benefitting the victims. The corporate office has also given each of those most affected by Harvey a generous tax-free donation to be used for repairs and recovery. “We are compassionate people always ready to help and support each other!” concluded Lori Roy. “All of our employees have a Harvey story to tell!”

ITW Insulation Systems is a strong supporter of the United Way of Greater Houston. All monies raised by United Way’s Flood Relief Fund are being used to help with both immediate, basic needs and long-term recovery services.

The 2017 Hurricanes each posed different threats and caused different problems. Harvey brought massive flooding, Irma deadly storm surges, and Maria catastrophic high winds. While recovery and renewal efforts still have a long way to go, expectations and spirits remain high. “I am happy to report that our customers are committed to putting Puerto Rico back in shape,” concluded Vincent Fuster of Dyplast Products. “I see the enthusiasm on the faces of these people and I hear it in their voices. They want to rebuild … and they are going to makeit happen!”

We conclude with this timeless quote:

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”

Winston Churchill

All of us at ESICA extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to those who went above and beyond the call of duty helping others ‘by what they gave’ in times of great crisis.

Today, we are excited to share some of the early memories of one of our strongest, long-term supporters, David Andrew, retired Group President, Irex Corporation.

“I joined ESICA in 1985 and became part of a great group of Insulation Contractors from Northeastern United States. Our mission was to improve the industry in a number of

areas. We shared information with one another about the labor contracts that we lived by in each city and worked to add language to each contract that was beneficial and to remove language that was not.

“We talked about the issues that we all faced with productivity and other workplace problems and we provided a platform for Union Conferences in the ESICA territory. As the years went by, we formed lasting relationships with other members and Union officials that helped resolve issues in a sensible way.

“Financing our activities was always difficult because most of the money came from conference registration fees and was never enough. To attract members, we needed conferences that were relevant and interesting.

“At first most of our conference speakers came from the industry and spoke at no cost but as time went on, we searched for more revenue sources. We learned that the Mechanical Contractors Association used collectively bargained industry funds for both local and regional activities. We followed suit and over time got most of the City Associations to help ESICA with a one cent per hour worked fund that to this day provides most of the funds needed for our activities. Participating in this effort gave me a lot of confidence that our association would continue for a long time.

The Knowledge Gap: What’s the Missing Piece?By Kim Melton, Technical Content Strategist, Johns Manville

The commercial construction and industrial industries are seeing a notable shift in the average age of their workforce, and they’re not alone. Across the United States, many highly specialized businesses are scrambling to fill a growing staffing deficit as people over the age of 50 retire, taking 30+ years’ worth of knowledge and on-the-job experience with them. This deficit is being backfilled by millennials, and by 2025, 75% of the global workforce will be comprised by this age demographic.1

Millennials bring some major benefits to the business world. They have a high aptitude for quickly adopting new technology, as well as a drive to thoroughly research information to ensure that they can make well-informed decisions. They are known for collaborating, and yes, they also have a propensity to look for jobs that will allow them to wear jeans to work. That said, there is one thing that many millennials are lacking – detailed, on-the-job experience that can only come from spending years in the industry.

In our industry, this lack of experience is becoming commonly known as the “knowledge gap” – the large and growing gap between what novice workers bring to the table and what the experienced industry experts take with them as they head into retirement. In some circumstances, the effects of this can be minor; for example, time can be lost if a young

contractor is using an inefficient method to install a product. In other circumstances, the damage can be far more impactful; for example, an inexperienced engineer, who isn’t familiar with real-world performance of various products, could specify a material that is poorly suited to the application, hindering system perfor-mance. This can put personnel safety at risk, cause unscheduled shutdowns, increase maintenance costs, damage the insulation or the surrounding equipment, and it can even negatively impact process control (an error that could go unnoticed for months or more before being rectified).

Given the broad range of applications and positions in the mechanical industry that require a nuanced understanding not only of what to do, but why you do it, losing people who have valuable on-the-job knowledge can be a critical blow to any team. As such, many businesses in the mechanical industry are now facing a growing need for training and education for their greener employees.

Recognizing this need, many organizations within the indus-try are doubling down on their efforts to offer educational resources. Organizations like NAIMA and NIA have initiatives like the Insulation Institute (NAIMA) and on demand training (NIA). Several manufacturers have stepped up to the plate to offer training and resources. Johns Manville is doing many things in this regard, like The Source: http://www.jm.com/en/building-materials/the-source/].

The Source is a new hub on the Johns Manville website that offers a library of training, tools, and educational resources:

• Webinars: JM offers fully educational webinars, co- hosted by external guests who can offer a broader perspective, ensuring that their webinars are not simply

limited to insulation. They cover everything from building code compliance to the latest corrosion research, and each live webinar is offered with a certificate of completion that may be submitted for continuing education credits or professional development hours. You can go to The Source to sign up for live webinars or view their recorded webinars on-demand.

• Blog: JM has hosted a blog since 2016, and the content is not only derived from their in-house technical experts. The blog has content from resources throughout the industry to ensure that the topics are highly relevant to the latest trends in the industry.

• Specification Comparison: One of the main hiccups that specifiers and contractors run into is that in order to compare the performance specifications of multiple products, they have to cross reference multiple data pages. The Source offers a specification section where you can do a side-by-side comparison of the performance specs of all the JM mechanical products.

• Training: One of the main things JM focuses on is delivering these resources to you free of charge. They offer an online training series through a platform called the JM Academy. The JM Academy has details on every thing from the basics of mechanical insulation systems to detailed instructions about how to install JM mechanical products. You can access the JM Academy through The Source, where you will find more detailed explanations of the training offered.

• Tools: In addition to training and education, JM strives to offer tools that can help make specifying insulation easier than ever. With apps like the Smart Binder, that gives you quick access to data sheets and technical documentation, and programs like the JM NAIMA 3E Plus tool, that calculates appropriate insulation thicknesses based on the needs of your application, JM is working to ensure the industry has tools and resources to maximize efficiency and accuracy. In addition to The Source, JM offers in-person training opportunities like Lunch & Learns, Product Information Workshops, and the Industrial Masters Course – all of which are free to attend.

Stone Wool Manufacturer ROXUL Inc. is now ROCKWOOL in North America

Effective January 1st, ROXUL officially adopted the name of its global parent company: ROCKWOOL--the world’s largest

manufacturer of stone wool products. Now, with a truly unified global presence, ROCKWOOL plans to build on its 80-year history by leveraging its broad portfolio of capabilities to enrich modern living by releasing the natural power of stone.

The rebrand to ROCKWOOL applies to all segments and product lines of the company’s North American stone wool insulation business--residential, commercial, roofing, OEM (core solutions) and technical insulation (industrial, marine & offshore). North American customers and consumers will see the ROCKWOOL rebrand supported throughout 2018 with increased presence, promotional efforts and communications.

Customers in all segments will notice a transition to the ROCKWOOL branding on all packaging. At retail home improvement and building centers, DIY consumers, builders and contractors will find a familiar look to the wrapping on ROCKWOOL COMFORTBATT®, SAFE ‘n’ SOUND® and COMFORTBOARD® products. The primary difference will be the new ROCKWOOL logo, which includes a graphic representation of a volcano--symbolically the source of the core material: volcanic rock, from which all ROCKWOOL products are made.

“The rebrand bolsters our position in the North American marketplace and internationally, as well,” says Trent Ogilvie, President, ROCKWOOL (North America). “It allows us to leverage our collective strengths to better serve both new and existing customers, while driving growth and investment across all regions.”

“The North American rebrand is meaningful beyond its impact to our company,” says Mirella Vitale, ROCKWOOL Group SVP of Marketing, Communications, and Public Affairs. “Under one, unified identity, ROCKWOOL is able to mobilize more effectively to address the challenges affecting modern society. As we look to the future, ROCKWOOL stone wool products will play an increasingly important role, providing effective solutions to the critical issues of modern living such increased levels of urbanization, climate change, sustainability, water scarcity, flooding, energy consumption and noise pollution. Our commitment to people and the planet is written in stone.”

New Study from American Chemistry Council (ACC): Insulation Industry Important to U.S. Economy

Effective insulation is an absolute necessity to running an energy efficient home, but a new economic report produced by the American Chemistry Council (ACC) shows that the insulation industry also contributes significantly to the U.S. economy—to the tune of $20 billion a year. The industry also helps support around 400,000 jobs each year, according to the report. The report comes as employment figures and the U.S. economy improve almost a decade after the start of the Great Recession.

“This report makes clear that the business of manufacturing, distributing, and installing insulation generates significant economic output and creates jobs across the country,” says Martha Gilchrist Moore, senior director of policy analysis and economics at ACC and author of the report.

Several groups contributed to the study, including ACC’s Spray Foam Coalition, the Cellulose Insulation Manufacturers Association, the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association, and the Polyisocyanurate Insulation Manufacturers Association.

The report’s findings also showed that the industry contributes indirectly to the economy through its purchases of supplies, raw materials, equipment and services. These contributions support an additional 42,500 jobs in supply-chain industries. The money spent by workers in the insulation manufacturing industry helps support an additional 49,000 payroll-induced jobs.

Insulation is widely used to keep modern homes and offices comfortable and energy efficient. Experts say that insulation can help consumers save money. “Beyond the report’s findings, which speak to the general economic contributions from this industry, insulation in homes and businesses saves energy, putting more money in the pockets of consumers and business owners,” says Lee Salamone, the senior director at ACC’s Center for the Polyurethanes Industry.

ACC periodically releases reports to inform consumers and policymakers about the economic impact of the chemical industry.

New Construction Starts in 2018 to Increase 3% to $765 Billion According to Dodge Data & AnalyticsDodge Data & Analytics released its 2018 Dodge Construction Outlook, a mainstay in construction industry forecasting and business planning. The report predicts that total U.S. construction starts for 2018 will climb 3% to $765 billion.

“The U.S. construction industry has moved into a mature stage of expansion,” stated Robert Murray, chief economist for Dodge Data & Analytics. “After rising 11% to 13% per year from 2012 through 2015, total construction starts ad-vanced a more subdued 5% in 2016. An important question entering 2017 was whether the construction industry had the potential for further expansion. Several project types, including multifamily housing and hotels, have pulled back from their 2016 levels, but the current year has seen continued growth by single family housing, office buildings, and warehouses. In addition, the institutional segment of nonresidential building has been quite strong, led especially by transportation terminal projects in combination with gains for schools and healthcare facilities. As for public works, the specifics of a $1 trillion infrastructure program by the Trump Administration have yet to materialize, so activity continues to hover around basically the plateau for construction starts reached a couple of years ago. Total construction starts in 2017 are estimated to climb 4% to $746 billion.”

“For 2018, there are several positive factors which suggest that the construction expansion has further room to proceed,” Murray continued. “The U.S. economy next year is anticipated to see moderate job growth. Long term interest rates may see some upward movement but not substantially. While market fundamentals for commercial real estate won’t be quite as strong as this year, funding support for construction will continue to come from state and local bond measures. Two areas of uncertainty relate to whether tax reform and a federal infrastructure program get passed, with their potential to lift investment. Overall, the year 2018 is likely to show some construction project types register gains while other project types settle back, with the end result being a 3% increase for total construction starts. By major sector, gains are predicted for residential building, up 4%; and nonresidential building, up 2%; while nonbuilding construction stabilizes after two years of decline.”

The pattern of construction starts by more specific segments is the following: • Single family housing will rise 9% in dollars, corresponding to a 7% increase in units to 850,000 (Dodge basis). Continued employ- ment growth has eased some of the caution shown by potential homebuyers, while older Millennials in their 30s are helping to lift demand for single family housing. A modest boost will also come from re-building efforts in Texas and Florida after Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. • Multifamily housing will retreat 8% in dollars and 11% in units to 425,000 (Dodge basis). This project type appears to have peaked in 2016, helped by widespread growth across major metropolitan markets. That strength has begun to wane in 2017, given slight deterioration in market fundamentals (rent growth, occupancies) and a more cautious bank lending stance.

• Commercial building will increase 2%, following a 3% gain in 2017, and continuing to decelerate after the sharp 21% hike back in 2016. Office construction should see further growth in 2018, helped by broad development efforts in downtown markets, and warehouse construction is supported by greater demand arising from e-commerce. However, store construction will remain weak, and hotel construction will continue to pull back from its 2016 peak. • Institutional building will advance 3%, maintaining its upward track after this year’s 14% jump. Educational facilities should see more substantial growth next year, lifted by the passage of recent school construction bond measures. The robust volume of transportation terminal projects in 2017 may

not be repeated in 2018, but activity should stay at a high level. • Manufacturing plant construction will recede 1% in dollar terms, after surging 27% this year due to the start of several massive petrochemical projects. Next year should still see moderate growth for manufacturing plants in square footage terms. • Public works construction will improve 3%, slightly more than the 1% growth in 2017. Highways and bridges should be helped as federal funding rises to the levels called for by the FAST Act, while the environmental categories will partly reflect reconstruction efforts related to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Additional benefit may come from the infrastructure program proposed by the Trump Administration, should it achieve passage in some form. • Electric utilities and gas plants will drop 13%, falling for the third year in a row after the exceptional amount reported in 2015. Power plant construction starts will ease back as new generating capacity comes on line. The 2018 Dodge Construction Outlook was presented at the 79th annual Outlook Executive Conference held by Dodge Data & Analytics at the Swissotel in Chicago IL. Copies of the report with additional details by building sector can be ordered by calling (800) 591-4462.
