SAFETY TIPS FOR ROAD USERS

Prof. Dr. N.S. SrinivasanTraffic and Road Safety Expert

PREFACEEvery six seconds someone is killed or maimed on the world’sroads, as per the latest data put out by the UN. Closer home, Indiatops the global count of accident deaths. The World HealthOrganisation ‘s (WHO) global status report on road safety claimsthat 1.3 lakh people are killed and half‐a‐billion hurt in India eachyear, resulting in an economic loss of Rs 75000 crores.

Among the five pillars of road safety management, viz. trafficengineering, traffic enforcement, traffic education and trafficmedicine, the role of public education about road safety principlesis very important. Government agencies, non‐governmentorganizations, voluntary bodies and others engaged in road safetyeducation generally find it difficult to get well written andappropriate road safety material. Road users are also required toknow traffic rules and regulations, safety tips for different trafficsituations, defensive driving techniques, etc.

The present booklet has been prepared in this background toprovide the necessary material for road safety educationprogrammes in a concise manner. The booklet would also beuseful for all segments of road users including drivers, pedestriansand school children. The structure of the booklet has been kept insuch a way that two adjoining pages of the booklet can bereproduced in the form of leaflets for mass distribution. Agenciesimparting road safety education can use the material in the form ofpamphlets on selected topics.
