Utilizing natural ventilation is the easiest and least expensive energy strategy and it has undeniable health benefits. Therefore, every classroom and office has operable windows to allow fresh air and allow natural light into the space as well. The design also includes two main gaps on the north façade to provide natural ventilation to the interior courtyard space. The size of the gaps were determined by the simulations formulated in Phoenics so as to avoid any possible wind tunnels and allow sufficient air flow to circulate throughout the space. Also, according to the Green Building Studio calculations this design will provide 4,914 hours of natural ventilation annually which is 48,085 kWh of energy saved.

Pockets

PalimpsestA trace of the Past

The objective of my thesis is to promote former

ideals of dual-cultural assimilation that attributed to

enriching American culture. American cities today

surround themselves with urban voids. These voids

have created isolated cultural pockets; therefore the

re-utilization of urban voids can serve as an adhesive

to reconnect surrounding neighborhoods.

Activating a built environment while designing with

human circulation and interaction within the site

promotes holistic and economical ideas that urban

voids need to become reactivated. Above all the

objective of the Cultural Exchange Center is to

provide a hub to educated users to different cultural

identities, not assimilate to one, and revive the past.

Eastland MCha rlotte, N C

The East land Mall in Charlotte, NC

closed its door in summer 2010 after 35 years

of business. This mall became the test site to

apply urban and architecture ideas that

promote dual assimilation. The attributes of

the site were ideal since this urban void is

surrounded by culturally diverse single and

multi-family households. The programming of

the site was broken down by the existing

exterior and interior circulation. This plan

began to form the idea of leaving a trace of

the past to remind future generations of this

past building typology. The structural

components of the mall were also reused for

other purposes throughout the site. This is

known as palimpsest.

of the building's roof orientation. Even though the roof faces South a lot of direct light would be able

to penetrate the museum through the East and West if it was left exposed. The inverted rectangular

pyramid attached to the roof's space frame directs light to a panel attached to the bottom of the space

frame. Controlling natural light in this form allows for an even distribution of light throughout the day.

Concept The skyscraper, as a "metabolic gateway," mediates both border crossing conflicts and the interface between tall building and nature. The skyscraper acts as a living organism mimicking its qualities as a bold expression. Living organisms have specific properties that define them. These properties are size, shape metabolism, movement, irritability, growth, reproduction, and adaption. Understanding these properties and the relationship to the revitalization concept has provided a train of thought that drives all aspects of the design.

Dwelling (Growth and Adaption) The living units are staggered to provide a single family dwelling on the first floor and a private work space on the second floor. This separation provides a peaceful place for the inhabitants to work on their projects. The units use a raised floor system that works in conjunction with the aerodynamic form. The form allows air to move from living unit to living unit.
